NEBO Redline Flashlight

Postby Winston Smith » Sun Jan 08, 2012 12:22 am

Just putting up a quick review, picked this up a few days ago for about $22 on Amazon. Doesn't seem to be too bad, it has 5 modes(solid beam in 220, 110 and 22 lumens, an S.O.S. mode, and Defensive Strobe, both 200 lumens) Although other sites have disputed the intensity, regardless it is very bright, more than enough to blind in CQC or illuminate a path on foot or bike. NEBO also makes rail and shotgun mounts for these, and they have light/laser combos for pistols w/underbarrel rails too. In order to change modes, you lightly tap the button in the base twice to cycle to the next one. After 20 seconds of being left off, it goes to the default 220 solid beam. The base has a magnet in it strong enough to hold the light horizontally or inverted, and the front has a strike face that while not razor sharp, could definitely do some damage if necessary. The lens is severely convex(almost like a glass ball cut in half), and the entire bezel rotates, moving the lens away from the light, and magnifying the beam. It uses 3 AAA batteries. There are a few downsides; the red ring(very stupid in my opinion) emits a slight glow when used, and is very weak, which makes no sense for a light with a bezel designed for striking(this thing would definitely crack after one good shot). A replacement can be ordered from eBay in Aluminum or Delrin for about $8, and I'm waiting on mine now. The bulb is not recessed much from the front of the bezel, so it's pretty susceptible to damage from normal use/carry.

The most important part/fix, which I couldn't find and had to figure out, is that my light arrived with its lens floating loosely between the bezel and the LED; I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be glued to the LED face(unlikely) or glued to the bezel(still kind of odd). Turns out, this was assembled incorrectly; the lens should have been sandwiched between the strike bezel and the red plastic ring, then the ring screwed into the rotating bezel part. I tried to remove the ring, which was stuck to the bezel tightly, with a pair of pliers, and it cracked VERY easily(kind of expected, but I'm not concerned with the aluminum replacement coming in), I grabbed it a different way and was able to screw whats left back in.

That little fix aside, I think it's a great value and a workable light overall. If anyone has any questions on it fire away as I'm still learning more about it and giving it some to impress or disappoint.

I have one. I think it's a great little emergency light for the price. I think it's little bulky for EDC on my person (well, compared to say a 4sevens Preon or Quark mini), but I threw mine in my Maxpedition fatty organizer. It's come in handy a few times with the magnet which lets it just cling to most metal surfaces, and it's plenty bright.

I have one as well. One quality issue I've had is that after months of solid use (EDC, use it all the time) very randomly it will emit only the low power light. I turn it off, unscrew the base, rescrew, and it works fine again. I don't know what that's about. Probably has something to do with me putting it in the washing machine or dropping it a couple dozen times.

I had NO idea bout the magnet. That will help so much at work :D

The strobe is annoying to get to as well. If I ever needed a tac strobe in the middle of the night it means I have to press the button basically 7 times or so to get to the strobe.

The crenelated tip isn't super tough - by that I mean it's aluminum and will ding up pretty easy compared with say.. steel. But that is typical for aluminum in most cases :)

I like it's size and that it's output is about 2x my energizer hard case flashlight. I also like it's price. I'm not into spending 90+ dollars on a damn torch. Good buy for the money overall.

REVIEW UPDATE***

I got the replacement Aluminum ring in a few days after my original review, and unfortunately found that it's threads didn't fit my NEBO, or if it did it required more force than I thought the flashlight body could withstand(I gave it to a friend who also has a Redline, also no luck). I contacted the seller, i_have_a_spending_problem on eBay, who was very upfront and offered to send the same part in Delrin, and to refund me if that didn't work. I've since received the Delrin replacement, which was a little easier to screw on(still very difficult, but possible with some elbow grease) but the lens is secure, the stupid glowing red ring is gone, and the light feels solid. My advice, which I'll share with my buddy, is that unless you really can't stand the red ring, buy the Delrin ring, and hang onto it as a replacement if the red ring fails. Another note, he doesn't appear to have these up for sale currently, but when I bought it they were listed as " Red Line Redline nebo Flashlight !! UPGRADE RING !! Aluminum ". You might be able to search it out or contact the seller to find out when these will be available.

Bloodbath, you mentioned in another NEBO review thread that you have a UTG weapon light. I'm always interested in hearing about lower cost alternatives to the high end stuff. How is that UTG working for you? Care to do a review?

NEBO Redline Flashlight

Postby Winston Smith » Sun May 06, 2012 3:08 pm

Sure, I just got it and don't have the item # handy, but it was amazon prime, has a remote switch and rail mount included, and feels lighter and sturdier than the nebo at the same time(++). I'll do a full review after finals week when I can tinker some more. I'm with you on saving money by buying off brand for sure!
