I think a Matchlock is a great idea :D my only concern is do you know how to make one and have the tools, supplies, and experience to make one. The internet is down and even worse you may not be able to find a library with the necessary info. I imagine this would be stolen at some point by someone with the same idea. If you can't make it well and be accurate with it then whats the point for immediate survival, sure I would keep trying to eventually get there but my question dealt with the first steps out of your home.
If it were me with my current knowledge and supplies I could maybe make a slingshot, atalatl, or a sling but even then I would not have the necessary skill to use it effectively  .

A matchlock is very easy to build and in a “no gun zone” any bang should be off putting to an agressor.
There are even historical accounts of cannons being built out of wood. They had a short life span but they did work. A wooden cannon is still scary as shit if you are picking a fight with the owner and your side only has spears and clubs.
After that crossbows or longbows, pole weapons, spears and the time honored practice of taking farm tools and making them into weapons.

Automobiles are an idea at first but gas goes bad in a matter of months, diesel lasts longer but you will eventually run out. Crashing head on into possible enemies seems foolhardy. Let's say I hit them and miraculously survive uninjured, now I have no transport and am stuck across enemy lines on foot. If I had access to transport I would like to keep it saved for last ditch escape.

You can push diesel shelf life out to several years with fuel stabilizers. But, there still is the problem involving fabricating a vehicle, subject to the OPs conditions, that's good for anything but a land going fire-ship. Now, a UTV or ATV+trailer would be a handy thing in general when most of the population is limited to walking.

EDIT: Getting back to the original question: If you have a group, you have the option of formations. You'll need to put in some study time on the nuts and bolts of it. You also have the option of massed artillery. There are a number of staff sling based weapons that have survived from the time of the Roman Empire until the end of the Age of Sail. They're easy to fabricate with hand tools and a little knowledge, and launch rocks, weighted darts, and incendiaries an impressive distance. While not as accurate, or as easy to use, as bows, there are, nonetheless, not something you want to be downrange of.

I think we missed the point. If you hold the car up in the air, say with a large crane you drop it on someone coming to kill you in the middle of the night and steal your stuff.

Image

You could also bait a car with stuff and have a big crane with a super magnet hanging over it. When the bad guy climbs in to make off with your stereo speakers you hit the super magnet and haul him 30 feet in to the air. You make him throw down all his weapons and stuff before you agree to let him go.
You go 'round and around it
You go over and under
I go through

What about Bicycle powered chariots used sort of like the Ancient Egyptians used their chariots. Lets say 2-4 bicyclist in front towing a 2 man crew in a chariot.
Image

Driver says to Soldier: Wh... Why do you have all that armor? No one said we needed armor, did they um say anything to you? Is there haha something I should know?
Soldier: CHARGE!!!!!!

Or, if you are an unlucky cyclist the stone chariot of shame.

Whoa, you can make those yourself? :awesome:. I am joking with you but remember the point of the original post. I bet you have some pretty good ideas on something you can actually make, hit me back with something you could feasibly produce and let's talk about it.

I wrote up a response on how easy a matchlock was, but decided to delete it.

While building a matchlock is legal in most of the US, if done improperly in any one of a number of way it becomes a weak but dangerous bomb. I wanted to stay on the right side of the keep it legal rule.

But a matchlock, corned powder and a match is pretty easy to build with hand tools. The technology is at least 500 years old, so it is not a military secret and should appear in a a hundred places in any mediocre library.

Those are awesome vehicles but how are they gonna work off road with hills, mud, and rocks? I would think the enemy is gonna be watching the roads if they didn't already set up traps. I mean even a few nails or screws thorn out in the road will stop them. Ground clearance is gonna be an issue. That said I have never been to OZ so maybe its much flatter than I imagine.

Spear. Cut a long, straight branch/trunk off a tree. Use a knife to cut it to a 8' by 1" pole. Attach knife to end of pole. Tada!
The most effective battle weapon until they stopped relying on bayonet charges.
