Earl - Backcountry Survival Tablet

Post by Sckitzo » Wed May 08, 2013 11:14 am

This http://www.meetearl.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; showed up on my FB feed. It seems really interesting and possibly very functional. I can't vouch for how well it works or that its not a giant piece of shit. But I'll be paying attention to it.

Some tidbits about it
Specifications: Android 4.1 • Flexible 6" E-ink screen (1024x768) • Sunlight viewable with lunar lantern mode • Glove friendly IR touchscreen • Waterproof shell • Kickstand • Solar charging • i.MX 6 DualLight 1GHz Cortex A9 • 1GB ram • 16GB memory + microSD • Wifi b/g/n • BT 4.0 • ANT+ • NFC • FRS/GMRS/MURS • GPS + GLONASS • Accelerometer • Gyroscope • Magnetometer • Temperature • Barometer • Humidity • Anemometer • AM/FM/SW/LW • IR blaster • 20+ hour battery • 20" usb lanyard • 303 grams (10.8 oz) • 183mm x 121mm x 15mm (7.2" x 4.75" x 0.6")

Looks like it has a
GPS with pretty decent looking topo maps
Some sort of weather sensors (I'm skeptical of this)
FRS, GMRS and MURS transceiver and looks like the ability to send texts and such (reminds me of Blue Force Tracker)
AM/FM/SW/LW radio tuner
Looks like Android apps will work, or at least some of them will.

Very interesting stuff, looks like someone was noticing how many people are taking tech into the woods these days and tried to make something to fit all of it into one package.

Only thing I didn't see mentioned is some sort of light. But then the screen i am sure can function as a light like most smart phones or tablets.

*edit to add, I am not even interested in tablets, but this sort of makes me consider this one. LOL

Exactly that right there. I'd always thought tablets were dumb. Maybe I was wrong...?

I wonder just how "rugged" it'll be. Toss on the couch rugged? Drunk monkey steps on it before kicking it down hardwood stairs? Or maybe somewhere in the middle, i.e. putzy dood who drops his cell phone a lot?

I'm very intrigued by this.

I have to wonder if the 'radio' part is a dongle

I just can't see a 5 watt GRMS and a two watt MURS and a FRS radio inside this thing.

I guess I'd want to handle one before commenting further.

All that seems to be missing is a Locator beacon (406Mhz), SATCOM link and a LASER signaling light...

I can't see it either, which could be why they're still waiting on the FCC... someone got told the hard truths of Part 95 certification. I also question if it's even legal for them to offer it for sale right now, the way they're doing. I know amateur gear can't be offered for sale until FCC approval, I believe it's the same with FRS/GMRS/MURS?

Well given this is a crowdsourcing deal (they need to sell 1005 to hit goal) maybe that is their hope?

275 seems a pretty fair price given what GPS or tablets run. I'll give it three weeks then judge my budget, I've been wanting a GPS to take camping and for preps, but dislike the smaller types so that alone would make me happy.

My thought exactly. If it actually worked it could be a neat feature to keep in contact with your buddies that are similarly equiped. Everybody currently uses the FRS / GMRS / MURS radios without getting the license anyway. :P For myself, and especially in emergency situations, I'll stick with my dual-band HT. All of the other features still sound useful and entertaining.

If they could even deliver 80% of the listed functionality it would be pretty damn useful.

I noticed on my iPhone that the LED light sucks a ton of power when in use. That could be why they did not include one.

IDK: If they could only shoe horn a swiss army knife in there I would be sold, otherwise it's just not enough for the price...

Seriously though, I hope it works out for them.

Pretty neat little gadget that I hope gets made, tested, improved upon, and made better. It would replace/augment a couple of tools already in my kit. I really dig the digital topo maps. While not a replacement for paper, it would definitely be more convenient for quick glances on location and coming obstacles.

I'll pay full price if and when it becomes something other than vaporware.

That being said, this is kind of the tablet I'm looking for.

I bought a Toshiba thrive for the ports (full size USB and SD card slot) for game cams, etc.

This tab sounds like what I was looking for. Looking forward to it.

I would be interested if they can really make it.

The solar powered and e-ink combo seems really useful.

Looking forward to see how it goes!

Not sure about the radios but aside from that, looks like a good idea - the eInk screen is the key as it allows much longer battery life than a regular tablet. If they can ruggedize it properly, it could really be a useful device.

A 'common man' alternative to provide some of the functionality would be to snap up a cheap eInk reader device (like the B&N nook) and get a rugged case for it plus a waterproof bag. You could hold maps and all sorts of other useful info on it (books of knots, survival manuals, info on local edibles, important documents).
