1L Nalgene for $0.50. Another (same price) was Swiss Gear, but hey, it's still a bottle...

You do know that Kevlar degrades over time don't you? But it's still a nice find even if it has been around long enough to have degraded down to a class II, just don't expect it to meet IIIA spec as far as protection goes.

What a great deal I got on this tent today at local thrift store.

This tent is like new, maybe used once and they went for around $300 at the jeep dealers back in the day.

I paid $14.99  And I do own a Jeep too.

This pic isn't my tent or jeep but it is the exact same tent as the one I bought.

I laid it out just to check for completeness and damage and it is new/like new

As I have mentioned before - I am the thrift store killer. Go into one with me and it will me mis-matched shoes and wooden bowls all day long and nothing good. That said, and I hope my curse has lifted maybe:

This Sunday looking for wedding stuff I found an ALICE large pack, no frame - $6. Why is that "good"? I got and have hung onto an ALICE frame for 4 years that I got for $5. Fully functional and in good shape large ALICE pack for $11 and 4 years time

Yesterday's Score:

1 Dutch Oven (Maker unknown, but seems older to me) - $20
1 Presto Pressure Canner (12 quart, Model 01/CAA12H) - $16 (note, its missing the rocker weight, and I'll probably get a new seal ring as well. Total parts cost, including shipping, $25. A comparable size, low end pressure canner online are over $80. I'll be in it for $40)
Sealed copy of Rift with 1 month subscription $4
Sealed copy of Left for Dead 2 - $14
Pair of waterproof winter boots for Mrs. Ice - $4 (almost brand new, no wear on bottom at ALL)
Various articles of clothing for Mrs. Ice (they rarely have anything in my size)
Midland Weather Alert Radio $1 (Missing all accessories and battery cover)

I did see two green coleman multifuel (I think) camp stoves in the back (that looked to be in cherry condition), but they hadn't been priced or put out yet.

Sadly, no. That thrift store is about 80 minute drive from our BIL (5 minutes from our old house, where I was working on Thursday). I may swing by Monday\Tuesday.

BTW, has anybody else noticed thrift store prices getting jacked up badly over the past couple of years.

Yep. More people thrifting and increases in prices for new means they can raise prices and still move inventory. Since the thrift shops I go to are almost universally supporting charities (Salvation Army homeless shelter, battered women's shelter, Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, and a church mission) I find it hard to begrudge them the extra dollar or two.

Found a Point Blank plate carrier with 3 double mag, 3 grenade and a large FAK pouches, all in woodland camo, at a swap meet this morning for $15. Also picked up a couple brand new 6 mag bandoliers in woodland for $3 each. A good day :D

Went by one Saturday. The only useful thing I saw was a small cast iron pan. It was $5 but it was clear that it had been used as an outdoor ash tray so that sorta grossed me out. I passed. I need to find a better store.

Oddly enough, I found the exact same thing.

Also found an unused 2010 climbing harness for $0.50 and a pair of combat boots for $3.

I don't have a problem with people going to the thrift stores, buying what they need (myself included).

The folks I have a problem with are the ones who are pretty much cherry picking, and then reselling the merchandise elsewhere... Example, there hasn't been a good cast iron skillet in any of the thrift stores we go to in over a year (I'm trying to get one for a guy I've been mentoring at work, who is trying to get into cooking). The dutch oven I got this week, some guy asked me who made it, because if it was this one company it would be worth a lot. I looked him straight in the eye, told him "sorry, I'm buying this because I need it, not to cherry pick and resell it." I glanced down at his cart, which had been filled up with higher value items then said "Unlike some people".

Don't get me wrong, I'm an entrepreneur myself, but when you're taking bar code scanners into a thrift store, scanning things to price check them, then you need to be escorted from the store and banned.

They've been going up since the mid 80s when it became an option for "not-poor". I had a few friends and an ex, in the 90s, that hit them up all the time and they always complained about prices getting jacked up then too.

It used to be a good place to find antiques for cheap. Everyone caught on to that though.

I saw some Coleman stoves last weekend too ... rusty and integral parts missing. :(

What parts are we talking? Fuel tank lids, pumps, generators...?

Of the 2 I was looking at both had missing grills.

One was also missing a handle and was rusty as Hell.
The other was missing the tank for the liquid fuel and the burners looked jacked up.

Both just looked like too much work. Geardo, one of our dudes here, can refurbish them but I didn't want to saddle him with work. He's busy enough.

Pretty good hunt today...

1) Like New Pro-Tec classic Skate Helmet. Had the liner in it, so it didn't fit me, but fit my boy easy. $2.90
2) S&A Household Paraffin Wax Block; un-used; $.99
3) USGI Woodland Poncho Liner modified with velcro to serve as a warm weather sleeping bag; $2.95
4) 3ea. Nat Geo BOOKS, like new; $1.50 for all three; got one on first hand accounts of modern primitive cultures...how they lived, cooked, slept, solved problems. Figured it would help me think out-side the box and improve my bush-craft skills.

About a week ago, I stopped by a few yard sales, thrift stores, and military surplus. Among the finds:
Cold Weather polypro top & bottom, dark blue trenchcoat with liner, rain pants, 1-2 other items: $5 (bag sale)
28 oz Kenmore logo Nalgene: $.50

A year or two ago, I found a 3-man hiking tent (Sierra Designs Clip 3, ~5lbs) for only $4.50. Still waiting to find another of those deals.

Flea market this morning was a jackpot
Boot box full of grips and a few holsters/scabbards - 25 all, I saw a nice pair of mustard grips near the top as well as a couple galco holsters. I did not even bother digging through it just took it. Get home and in the bottom is a set of kimber marked Crimson trace laser grips - dead battery and no screws but who cares? also a set of aluma grips.

Also picked up a couple chains, mostly 3/8 and 1/2 in odd lengths - about 100 ft or so all together for 10 bucks.

I've been searching for a new fishing jacket and vest and yesterday I scored. Found a wool bush jacket lined with fleece, a down vest, a bigger version of my favourite hoodie and a wool blanket for a total of $15.95. Nice!
