Cool tip! Looks like REI an UCO are just packagers...

Actually this is incorrect. The mathes produced by Octavius Hunt are the NATO/ "Lifeboat" windproof matches.

The UCO matches are larger and contain 2-3x more pyrotechnic compound. They are also orange, where the OH brand are brown.

Here's a slideshow on County Comm that shows you the difference. The UCO's are way more beast than the OH windproof matches.

Word to the wise: if you include a striker in the match tube, keep it away from the heads, just in case it gets jostled. I saw one pack go "FWOOOOOOOOOOOOSH" in someone's pack this way just yesterday. The fire marshal was NOT impressed.

This is true. I saw myself do it a few years ago. Luckily it was not in my pocket. Some tips:
1) As you might see in my pics, my matches are kept in the plastic baggy they came in for that reason (and some moisture protection).
2) I cut and fit a striker strip in the lids of all my match cases. Thus, I pack all my matches "head down".
3) I have wrapped striker strips packed with matches in foil.

I do the striker on lid/head down thing too. I've been lookign for a bigger match-holder so i can keep them plastic-wrapped. I'm thinking a plastic water-proof cig case (like the one Dave_M ha son his battle-rattle) might be the route to go. More matches, no cutting, and more real-estate for a striker.

For $3.50 I figure I'll give it a whirl. A surplus ngrenade pouch and a MagPul, and a quick coat of paint should make this thing awesome. Reviews whenever I can.
