Making a knife.

Postby Marxist » Tue Jun 12, 2012 8:08 pm

So, I have a tiny budget, and I'm looking at attempting to make a knife. I have no experience whatsoever. I'm looking at the stock removal method first, and at ordering O1 tool steel off of amazon. I have most of the basic tools i think I need, but any tutorials or tips would be welcome.

The easiest way will be to cut it to the desired shape, and send it off for heat treatment. What parts specifically do you want help with?

There's been lots of good posts on the subject, a good trawl with the Search should bring up what you are after.

I'd recommend a peruse of Storm Crows Heat treatment guide would be a good start.

Yeah, Storm Crow's heat treatment guide - it's all about oil and fire.

DIY, especially if you’re just starting out, often times ends up costing more than just buying. I’m not trying to discourage you – I’m a DIY fanatic if ever there was one – but DIY is not necessarily a money saving avenue. It will be immensely satisfying, give you exactly what you want, but it is rarely a pastime for the frugal.
