I walk late at night, and over the summer for the first time I started wearing a headlamp. It seemed silly at first, but as many on this forum have pointed out it's a great tool. Once you try it you'll never go back to walking around with a flashlight in your hand. That uses up half your hands! Just try to do things one handed, including racking the slide or reloading a magazine on a pistol for starters.

Anyway I had a Streamlight Triad that worked really well. I used it a lot and liked it. It had two wide angle settings and one Xeon beam for distance. I could shine it on the sidewalk/path directly in front of me, or sweep from side to side at possible threat locations. It really made walking fun again instead of boring.

Just tonight I got to try out a brand new super-duper headlamp that I ordered. It's the Princeton Tec Apex Pro. It cost around $90. My old Streamlight was "only" $30. My new baby is incredible! First off it's twice as bright on even the lowest setting than the Streamlight I was used to. Plus it uses cr123 lithium batteries instead of AAA. The run time isn't as long on low as the streamlight headlamp, but the Princeton is brighter. I'm trying to use the same batteries for all my equipment, and my little Fenix (best flashlight I've ever owned...blows Surefires away) also uses cr123 lithiums, so I only need to have four of these small batteries on me to switch out any of my lights at any time.

As I was walking through very dark wooded areas I could push a button and jack up the brightness level and see everything, It was beautiful! It's amazing the psychological affect of confidence one experiences when threatening areas are cleared up instantly.

I haven't tried to use the most powerful narrow beam (120 lumens) yet. But I held off because there was no need to, and it burns through the batteries much faster.

Shockproof. Waterproof. Lightweight. Small. I'M IN LOVE!

I have an older Apex and it rocks. Was looking at the newer Apex but would go with the 4XAA model or the new Fenix 4xAA headlamp as my flashlight and GPS uses them and I use rechargeables so just run them down lighting up the woods. Yea a real bright headlamp kind of takes away that boxed in feeling.

I love a good head torch, if you are feeling old school Petzl helogen head torches are going half price now and are a good buy if you have some rechargables handy.
