Here's the video.

It's a horse bow, very low poundage, can't see if she's got a thumb ring on or not, but with the draw weight I suspect not.

From what I can see in the video, she's holding her hand upside down and possibly has her thumb around the string when she lets go of the arrow.

I'm not entirely sure since she moves too quick for me to be certain.

Looks like a thumb ring to me.

Ignoring the loop, this is what her draw resembles most to me:

And don't let it fool you, those things can be SCARY accurate with the right person behind them. Just be aware that if you're going to enter competitions here in the US, some organizations classify the thumb ring as a release aid which makes it ineligible for use in a "traditional" class, you will be moved into open and have to play with the guys that have the 4 foot stabilizers/scopes/bt releases/etc...

I'm far from being an expert on bows and the different styles, so any info I can get on her particular style in greatly appreciated.

The last time I used a bow was back when I was about 12 and it was one of those cheap kids compound bows Wal-Mart used to sell.

I want to get back into that, but have no idea where to start or even what the right bow for a guy my height would be.

ETA: My height probably has no bearing on what the right bow or style would be for me. Then again, I'm new to this stuff, so I have no idea.

Go to a pro shop, preferably a mom and pop type place, get fitted for draw length, and take a few for a spin.

There's a fair few members from texas there who might be able to recommend you a good local place.

I'll check that place out.

Thanks, Ad'lan.

I think there might be a mom and pop type bow shop back in Southeast Texas, but I'm not sure.
I'm headed that way in March for a vacation so it wouldn't hurt to see if there's any shops out there.

140#?! Are you hunting T-Rex, or just French men-at-arms?

I am I the only one who dislikes all the fancy pulleys and scopes on moderen bows today? I want to know what is the most accurate wood bow that uses only your instinct. I have been using a warbow at 60lb's but they arn't known for accuracy, only power range, and that if you get shot with one, the arrow is gonna go straight through you. Please advise.

@shiloh Nope..just pulling them back and letting them fly! We shot at pretend French men-at-arms, but it was mostly about having fun trying to master big bows and making jokes about hemorrhoids popping  and balls dropping off :gonk: :D

@Kissing-Tom Yep, when (if) someday I have it at full draw and can get a picture I certainly will. I had it pulled to about 29" in England, but we had plenty of room to shoot there. I can't find any open land around here upon which I can clout so I've been shooting my little lightweight longbows. It would take me three months to build back up to #140 :D

@arrowmaster: In my opinion is a OsageBow with bamboo-Backing a really good, accurate wooden bow. A friend of me has one with 45#. Very fast bow.
Yes, he´s a good archer, but hit small targets at 50 meters with a wooden bow constantly is not simple and without a good bow and good arrows not possible.

@gipsyblood: Thank you! I know, it´s hard work!

No

ArrowMaster wrote:I want to know what is the most accurate wood bow that uses only your instinct.

The one you practice most with.
ArrowMaster wrote: I have been using a warbow at 60lb's but they arn't known for accuracy, only power range,

A warbow isn't a warbow, even if it's designed as a warbow (full compass D curve Self Longbow), if it has a draw weight of less than 80lb's. 80lbs minimum. And I know people who regularly shot NFAS scores in the 600's with a simple longbow, so again, it'll be known for accuracy if you practice.

ArrowMaster wrote: and that if you get shot with one, the arrow is gonna go straight through you. Please advise.

A 20lb bow is sufficient to go through you if you get hit in the right/wrong spot. What do you need the bow for, what sort of shooting do you intend to do, what sort of accuracy do you want to achieve, how much practice can you put in?

I've seen that Russian girl video before. Total thumbring or maybe just bare thumb - regardless she is shooting from her thumb. This is a horsebow technique used because horsebows are pretty short (compared to a longbow) so when you go into your draw, a 3 or 2 finger technique might get squished by the angle of the string. Hence, horse-archer cultures, with typically shorter bows, have a thumb technique.

I practice thumb with my horsebow (a 66# Kassai Mongol Bow) and it is hard if you are a western archer predominately. Plus, I need a better thumb ring than the one I have currently.

Horse Archer style for life.

Mongol General: Hao! Dai ye! We won again! This is good, but what is best in life?
Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.
Mongol General: Wrong! Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
Mongol General: That is good! That is good.

Those things are the greatest things in life.

That and being able to rock a horse bow as well as that russian chick. That would be pretty greatest. :D

I don't know quite what to make of this guy...

...but the video gets my vote for most optimistic soundtrack.

Anybody hit that old (I think it was phillipino) video we used to watch with the guys sniping ballistic gel dummys through narrow doorways, running through the woods doing ambushs, even drive by shooting yet?

Sloppy technique and a general lack of skill, is what I make of him. And I feel that distinct smell of mall ninja oozing from that video

Here is the same technique. Only this time, it's done right:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=2yorHswhzrU#t=83s

Same guy, same number of arrows, in the same amount of time. But on horseback:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InWW_uhX_Ts&feature=related

I have been practising this technique for a while (I don't shoot longbows exclusively) and it works very well. Unfortuanately, I'm still almost 10 seconds slower than him :|
Without the horse that is.

Edit: Changed to links.
Why does the embed feature not work?
Gear is a poor substitute for knowledge. And much heavier.
