Huh. Found a Japan Forum link about swords and sword quality. Figure everyone should at least glance it over.

http://www.jref.com/culture/japanese_swords.shtml

Hell, there's even a quote worth remembering:

Q: The sword was the soul of the samurai, right?
A: In a sense, yes. There has been plenty written on the relationship between a samurai and his sword. I shall not go into that now. However, we need to keep in mind that a sword is like a pistol to the modern soldier - a weapon of last resort.

That's something almost no one realizes. Samurai used katanas, yes, but the core of their study, what they evolved from and continued, was bowmanship. The bow was the true weapon of the Samurai. They date back some thirty five hundred years as riders and bowmen.

Edit. As I actually read the article, I see it touched on that a bit.

I have thirty rotary wing hours. I have flown a helicopter. That's what rotary wing means. I am just not a professional helicopter pilot.

M-9 Bayonet

Postby AirborneChaplain » Thu Aug 05, 2004 2:34 pm

What about mounting an M-9 Bayonet on your CAR-15 or M-4? YOu could use it in a slicing motion, and the upside is that you can use the scabbard and blade as a wire cutter.
a lot of my guys in the Airborne swear by their M-9's, what do you all think?

I liked them, cause at least you could use them as a field knife. Not a GREAT one, but still. Never tried to cut wire with them.

This is my pocket knife:

I once drove it through a piece of leather, like butter, it went straight through it.

PS-I keep it in my pocket at all times.

I keep my Winchester folder in my pocket at all times.

It's not black or tactical looking or anything... But it's got your standard tactical folder setup, what with pocket-clip and thumb bars and all.

It's actually about identical to the tactical folders Winchester used to make for SWAT (I think it was for SWAT, anyways).

The only difference: Cherry-wood handle. I'm not a sissy just because I think wood is prettier than hard plastic.

Also, the wooden handle is a LOT heavier than the light plastic one (especially since a lot of plastic handles have air-holes cut in them), and I've thrown this beast a few times (and I mean FEW), and that extra heft makes it cleave through targets up to the hilt!

A $90 machette? I don't think so. They look like they'd be a poor compromise between a battle blade and a brush cutter. Interesting idea, though.

A machette isn't supposed to be solid, it's supposed to be light, so you can swing it all day as you cruise through the jungle! :D
