New Claymore

Yes, it is I Maj.Exec that hath purchased a claymore, in fact one very similar to the one in braveheart, yet that was not the reason I bought it. Anywho, I got it and went for a sharpenss test, dull, in fact worse than dull, almost thick and useless. I can only assume that this is a sword for re-enactment, but damnit, I want to hit a coconut or two with it. How do I go about sharpening that hunk of steel.

Start with a flat file, if that doesn't work, a grinder.

If it really is that incredibly dull, start with a file or grinder. Otherwise, you can do it with a whetstone, but that can be time-consuming with a larger blade. My recommendation is to file it down until it feels like its developing an edge, and then to start using a whetstone (and oil).

No doubt it'll smash coconuts with a little application of strength, but I doubt (until sharpened) that it'll give you the heavy slicitude you no doubt were looking for when you purchased it.

If you use a grider, be sure to keep the blade nice and cool. A quick pass, and then a quench in water, etc. You don't want to take the temper out of the metal, which is easy to do with a grinder if you aren't watching carefully.

super bad idea. one, if it is oil cooled steel, cooling it in water is a bad bad idea. it will structurally damage the metal. vice versa if it was water cooled and you use oil to cool it.

furthermore, if it came unsharpened, then sharpening it will damage the structure of the metal as well, making it likely to break when used on coconuts or zombies. or zombie coconuts. thems the breaks. i have a degree in metalsmithing from Kent State University, and i strongly recommend you dont try to sharpen it.

if you wanna chop something with it, might i suggest watermelons? R. Lee Ermy (sp?) seems to enjoy destroying them, and so did Gallagher. plus, you can eat the melons afterward. great way to serve at a party.
