Current state of mid-tech knives(continuation from other thread)

For those who live in areas where firearms are not an option and those that are smart enough to have a back up.

Current state of mid-tech knives(continuation from other thread)

Post by Storm Crow » Mon Jul 23, 2018 11:37 pm

I mentioned these in another thread and Moab showed interest. These have been in looooooong, slooooooow progress through more years than I care to contemplate, and are finally tantalizingly close to fruition. They've gone through several generations in small batches and this is the current one.

All are currently hand-ground from blanks waterjet cut from 3/16" 80CrV2 steel, with black Cerakote ceramic gun coating, TeroTuf handle slabs, flared stainless steel tube rivets, and Boltaron sheaths. ASAP, they will have CNC-milled bevels. I'm working with a couple of fellow San Antonio-area knifemakers, JB Knife and Tool, to set up for all of us to be able to increase production with CNC milling and routing. I might have to do a batch or two hand-ground before we can get all the kinks worked out, but we're moving forward.

The three designs I'm launching with are designs that have been popular in forged versions: Little Rok, Benghazi Warfighter, and mini-parang. More forged designs and brand-new clean-sheet designs will be forthcoming, both as permanent (or semi-permanent) designs and in limited run batches.

First, in progress shots, finished up except for sharpening, while I was in the final mad dash to get ready for the Blade Show. These give a sense of scale. I have fair-sized paws.

As per Moab's comment on handle slabs, these are currently contoured with a custom-made router bit that combines a roundover bit and a table edge/thumbnail bit to yield what I find to be a very comfortable grip.

I'm really liking the looks of the Benghazi Warfighter and the mini parang, Storm Crow.

All three look great, but the Warfighter and mini parang are my favorites of the three.

Flybynight - I'll see if I can send you a PM.

12_Gauge_Chimp - I'm partial to bigger blades, too.

JeeperCreeper - I need to shoot some video with all of the knives, especially the mini-parang, when everything is rolling. Here's an older version:

Halfapint - Prices are figured, and there have been small batches produced, but they've been ground by hand. I'll be switching to CNC milling of the bevels as soon as possible (problems popped up with the X-axis on the milling machine as we were getting ready to design the holding fixture), but there are actually Benghazi Warfighters and Little Roks immediately available at a certain dealer right now. Those are his pics with the waffle mags in the background. :)
