RUB-15 slingshot crossbow for M16/AR-15 lower receiver?

For those who live in areas where firearms are not an option and those that are smart enough to have a back up.

RUB-15 slingshot crossbow for M16/AR-15 lower receiver?

Post by JoergS » Mon Apr 08, 2013 7:44 am

Many of you have probably hear of the PSE TAC15 crossbow that fits on an AR-15 or M16 lower receiver.

http://www.tac15.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I think the idea is compelling! And since the lower receiver is an unregulated gun part here in Germany, it is not illegal to buy one and modify the heck out of it. I could even buy a deactivated "deko" M16 with a fully functional full auto lower receiver.

http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=4165675" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=4329466" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Now the idea would be to come up with a very slick looking rubber crossbow concept, with scope of course. I am thinking about a turnable "muzzle" that allows you to choose between a steel/lead ball (or even a stone) and a full size arrow, like the TAC15. Since rubber doesn't require the huge draw force of a crossbow, I would go for a stirrup instead of a winch. I would use a sled that allows you to preload the weapon, so if you want to shoot you just have to rack the slide back using two levers and you can shoot.

This time I wouldn't use wood, but machined aluminum.

What do you guys think?

Have bought the M16, original model with Full Auto switch. 1200 Euros.

Once it arrives, I will start to design the kit.

- Must look absolutely cool
- Must be able to shoot arrows AND steel balls
- Must be preloadable, so cocking is quick and easy
- Must be dead accurate
- Must be able to shoot armor piercing arrows
- Must shoot steel balls hard enough to break a coconut at 15 meters
- Must be totally silent
- Must be exchangeable against the conventional upper within seconds
- Must include a "magazine" that fits into the lower receiver, containing steel balls and spare rubber bands
- Must not cost more than 35 dollars in parts (plus assembly)

Quite a challenge, right?

Impossible. Absolutely impossible. There. I've said it. Now please prove me wrong.

Well... aluminum and steel just isn't very expensive. And a slingshot crossbow isn't a very complex weapon, even if it has two "barrels". Keep in mind the stock, trigger and so on is already in place (M16).

I'm so much in favor of this, you have no idea. :ohdear:

Also, did you spend € 2000 on a deactivated M16 because it's a cool collectible? I totally get this.

If it was just for the RUB-15, semi auto Oberland Arms lowers go for under € 300, if you know where to look. Just saying.

This will be awesome.

I spent 1190 €, not 2000. I think I can easily sell it for about that price later on, more if I add the slingshot.

I thought about getting a lower as a separate item, but

a) I want to show how to change back and forth between firearm and slingshot
b) most lower receivers come totally naked and you need to get all of the small parts from somewhere else
c) the YouTube income will easily cover the price of the M16
d) it is kind of cool to own one, even in deactivated condition.

Getting closer. Weapon arrived, and I have been doing some thinking.

I don't want to use the winch thing the TAC15 employs - too slow. I will add a stirrup and pull levers so you don't have to pull on the string itself. I hate the cocking aids you have to use on many modern crossbows - when you loose them, the weapon is useless, and also it takes forever to put them in place.

In order to reach my 30 dollars bill of materials goal, I will have to employ both wood and metal. Wood can be replaced by 3D printable plastic later on.

I decided to go for heavy aluminum arrows instead of lightweight CF ones - rubber based crossbows aren't as fast as compound types, but can handle heavy projectiles really well. I like momentum as it can cause much more damage, therefore aluminum it is.

Will start working on the real thing this weekend.

Here are the first pcture of the build...

Will do a pure arrow shooter first, just to learn what works and what doesn't.

Removed the upper receiver and also the trigger/hammer assembly. Then I made a base plate from 18mm multiplex. Added a trigger and my usual lock, used a nail that I can bend into shape.

The lock works like a charm!

I will use two 16mm steel tubes as "barrel" and "rail" parts. The draw is 100% inline with the rails. I plan to make a cocking slide for fast action. This crossbow will be quick.

No changes to the original M16A1.

Have been working on it some more. Made an encapsulated front part, for silencing and rubber protection purposes.

I still have to attach brushes to the front and back holes, but it already is very quiet. I also might include a band heating system.

Equipped with 3,1cm x 3,1cm bands (four strips per side), it shoots the 40 gramm aluminum arrow with mighty force. The field tips penetrate about 3cm into massive oak panels. The field tip is pushed down the shaft in the process.

As happy as I am with the functionality, as unhappy am I about the looks. Boxy, clumsy, foolish. Back to the drawing board.

Holy crap. off topic but how in the heck do you get a M16 lower in Germany? Those are a massive no go in the US unless it's NFA registered. I don't know the law in Germany at all but that looks like a functioning reciever. Does it have the trigger pack? I don't see the pins that retain them so I'm wondering if you just removed them. What about it makes it a replica?

Whatever you do, for your trip to the US this summer, do not bring that.

OT: Cool project, just wondering about the M16 lower. Possessing one without the proper paperwork here is a serious violation of the law.
