My CS trail hawk is arriving tommorrow.

Post by supraneurotoxin » Tue Apr 02, 2013 12:55 am

I'm sitting here shamelessly watching fight scenes from the Patriot and Last of the Mohicans on YouTube, and checking for shipping updates.
Well now not completely shamelessly now that I see that in writing..
Anyway i plan to remove the set screw and clean up any burrs, and I will likely remove the black paint from the hawk head. From what I've read the edge may need some attention as well.
I'm going to whittle(if I can get away with calling it whittling when there's a belt sander involved) a few different hafts out of some seasoned hardwood saplings.
Anyway I just wanted to tell someone.

I'm toying with the idea of ordering one as well.

I've heard nothing but good things about them, and at the price point it's hard to say no.

On a side note...how bout those Orange?

As a melee weapon it's BA! Not a fan of it in the woods but it'll work in a pinch...
That being said I love mine and in a true bug out it would be carried!

I have one as well. I love it. I took of the black paint, lightly sanded the handle down and stained it a little darker, and smoothed the head over. You will need to sharpen the face, I am working on my edge, almost done. Stonedog is right, it isn't as useful as a hatchet in the woods but that's the trade off. A hatchet is a tool that can be a weapon in a pinch and a tomahawk is a weapon that ca be a tool in a pinch. Sometimes people don't realize that. But anywho, you'll love it.

Well the trail hawk came in the mail about a week ago, and I'm in love. I've put in a lot of time swinging a framing hammer, and this thing is balanced similarly enough that muscle memory took over shortly after I began playing with it. It feels right at home in my hand, and has a very a solid feel to it.

Submitted my post before I was ready.. damn smartphones.

So far on the hawk head I've ditched the set screw, stripped the paint, smoothed out the rough edges, fixed the edge and polished the whole thing up with Emery cloth. I then applied a thin layer of oil to the metal surface for rust protection.
I sanded the finish off the shaft and rubbed it down with linseed oil. The whole thing looks fairly awesome if I do say so myself. Pics to come.
