Neck knife under 30$

Postby Marxist » Fri Jul 06, 2012 6:48 pm

I'm looking for a cheap neckknife, and I am looking at the Buck Hartsook. Any recommendations would be great. I want something non tactical looking. I want no daggers, because of the obvious legal issues with carrying them around.

Close to 30, might be able to find it under 30 if you shop around. It's a really good knife, probably the best in that price range.

Get a Mora. Cut off the plastic tab on the sheath that is used to attach it to a button or belt. Using duct tape and paracord make a tether for you neck. Here is mine:

It hangs handle up.

On there you will find the knife, about 8 feet of duct tape, a utility sewing needle, tweezers, and a whistle. There is no specific reason those things are there other than that's where I put those things. You will also notice I joined the paracord with duct tape so as to create a "break-away" so I can decrease the chance that I accidently hang myself with it.

The Becker TDW linked is also very popular.

Mora is also a great choice, and dirt cheap. I've never worn one as a neck knife, so I didn't even think of it.

I didn't even bother cutting the tab off, I just ran the paracord through it sideways. Leaves me more options in that I can still stuff it into the MOLLE webbing on my pack and tuck that tab under to hold it on.

While I also love a Mora, I have a neck knife that I can find no faults in. My Boker Gnome is with me for most of my waking hours and I use it for everything. Great little knife. IMO

Becker Necker is a good choice.

That said, if you can locate a Camillus CUDA ARCLITE neck knife, grab it. I bought a bunch of them back when Camillus was a going concern. Gave them to my brothers and a few friends, and kept one. Lost mine someplace, dang the luck. Now I'm reduced to going and swiping one out of little brother's pickup one of these days.

I have a Becker Necker, and I think it's OK. What I really like is my CRKT Minimalist.

Another option, for much under $30. The Ka-Bar/Johnson Adventure Blades "Piggyback". I think I payed $12 for mine, listed at $9.99 here.

I'm not a steel expert, but it's decent, high carbon steel and takes and holds an edge well. It's apparently similar to 420HC. Not the equal of S30V, but not bad. For a little skinning knife, it functions well and is definitely a great value.

I LOVE my cold steel double agent II. I think I paid $27 for it at knifecenter.com. Doesn't print, but the finger holes keep your grip secure. I found a lot of other neck knives had feeble handles that just didn't fit in my hand, but the DA is great for everything a neck knife should be used for and then some.

I like my Boker Magnum Escape Wharncliffe-type knife, $25 at the local Bass Pro and it has a neat pocket sheath, as well as a hole in the end of handle to tie cord to it.

I also love my $30 CRKT SPEW knife also from BPS, has a convertible sheath for neck or belt-clip use as well. One could also put it in a boot.

I looked over both before buying, my friend got a not-shaving-sharp Boker Magnum Escape, but my BME and CRKT SPEW both left my arms hairless 8-)

I have the Buck Hartsook, and it is inexpensive, small and really light. It is a light duty knife but I like it for its size.
