Thankfully i have not had a dumb thing happen with a firearm. I treat them like the industrial tools i use every day. One split second of not paying attention and its going to be a life changing event. Accidental discharge is your malfunction not the firearm.
Rule one. Treat every gun as if it is loaded and chambered.
Rule two. Never point a gun at anything unless you are willing to destroy it.
Rule three. Your always betting you life on knowing the proper function and condition of the firearm.

First time I fired a Semi-auto pistol I almost broke my left thumb by putting it behind the slide. Luckily my buddy (whose gun it was) noticed my error quickly and all I ended up getting was a bruised ego.

I can't think of anything that I've done that was dangerous, but once while turkey hunting with some coworkers I loaded a shell into my shotgun backwards. No one was able to get it out and I had to disassemble the gun when I got home. Luckally someone had a loaner gun but I still get taunted for it 4 years later.

The dumbest thing I ever did was fire 5 full house .357 magnums in a scandium S&W J frame. The first one was enough but my ego would not let me say no to the other 4 rounds.

Pistol grip 12 ga shotguns are more pleasant to shoot that that little J-framed beast.

OK, I have two.

My deer rifle had been givin me trouble. It's a sears model 100. Basically it's a winchester 94 action. You need to load a round close the action and then put the hammer on half cock/safe by holding the hammer back and pulling the trigger. The problem is the gun would lock up and the hammer would not move when you pulled the trigger. It was starting to do this the previous year and would sometimes take three or four attempts to get it to safe.
Following year I am having the same problem and one of the guys I hunt with is a gunsmith. I show him the problem, We are messing with it for a minute of two. Finally the hammer decides to release, unfortunalty I no longer have my thumb on the hamme BAMM. Luckily we had the gun pointed into the woods. I took the gun to a repair shop, they couldn't find a problem. The solution was a good cleaning with Gunzilla. I had always cleaned the gun everytime I shot it before, but after using gunzilla it now works like it should.

Other dumb thing.
Take my daughter out to my mothers property to shoot a BB gun. We nail the target to a wooden saw horse. After a few shots I hear Ping, after a shot, and realize the BB ricocheted back and had hit me in the belt buckle. End of shooting for the day. Now we use a blanket as a backstop and make sure we are wearing safety glasses. I don't think we were the day we had the ricochet. (OK, thats another dumb thing.)

The second to last time I went out hunting with my Dad, we were hunting on the state game area in Lapeer county. Anyhow, I had a Traditions inline muzzleloader. The safety on that model is right by the bolt handle. I had the rifle slung on my shoulder as we walked into the woods, I reached around to grab the rifle to take it to port arms, missed and snagged the safety. I reached around again, accidentally hit the trigger and touched off the .50 cal right next to my right ear. If it was inclined a little more to the left I would have blown my own damn fool head off.

I'm a lot more careful now...

I was 17 and had a bolt action 16ga. I pulled it out of the case to clean it. I was sitting on the edge of bed and slipped off onto the floor. Out of reaction I pulled the trigger. Apparently when we went shooting the prior weekend I did not shoot all my shells. I promptly blew a hole in my wall and peppered the gutters real good! My dad, aftet he saw I was still alive, started busting out laughing. Mom, not so much.

In Basic training right after weapons familiarization I was cleaning the SAW. I pulled the bolt back and was wiping out the inside when some how I managed to pull the trigger. the bolt slammed forward and smashed the ever loving hell out of my thumb. The nail fell out and ever Drill Sgt we had was giving me shit for breaking my thumb

Hahaha reminds me of a guy who was cleaning a minimi on my basic with and he cocked it then unhinged the buttstock and then popped the spring out and it and the guide rod smashed him in the nose! Bled fucking EVERYWHERE... soo funny

You didnt drop the gun and it went off, that would be an accident. In all the cases I know of, including my own, we pulled the trigger. Thats negligence. Unless you have an unsafe gun that really did go off, chances are its not an accident.

Think what you will. You can leave this thread thinking the world is full of dumbass gun owners, or you can leave taking a look at yourself and become a safer person. Ive seen NRA instructors sweep a class, you can always be safer.

A friend had an old (no transfer bar) revolver in his jacket inside pocket, 6 rounds in the cylinder and a strap on the holster under the hammer as a"saftey". Bent over and the gun fell out, landed on the hammer, pushed the firing pin through the leather strap into the primer, 45 long colt dang near blew his left knee off.
Because he dropped it it's an accident, because he had 6 rounds in an old gun, it's negligence, so this is both accident and negligence?

had a Friend with similar 1911 had it fire out of battery,

I did not feel like picking powder out of my face,
decided I would test my Pistol's out of battery saftey,
so I dropped mag, rack rack rack, visual check ( bad lighting ),
used my pointer finger to pull the slide back from the front keeping clear of the barrel,
Keeping my finger clear of the barrel,
pulling on the trigger while out of battery to see if I could cause it to malfunction,
no such luck ,
upon being reassured with the safety mechanism I pulled the pistol away from my hand,
and muzzled my hand for only an instant,
however during that instant I decided to drop the hammer, (since I KNEW the pistol was empty )
planning to put the pistol back in its holster,
and call it a night,
things didn't go according to plan,
Gun went bang


I suspect a combination of possibly having 10 rounds for some reason, when I was only supposed to have 9 , (in my head I thought all the available rounds were accounted for)

along with the obvious human errors

its nice and easy to say "treat everygun as if its loaded", but in hindsight, people in general (even highly trained) treat firearms a WHOLE lot different than when you know there's a round in the pipe, but maybe its just me,
also in general, overconfidence can kill
flame me if you want, but at least I have the stones to admit my errors,

keeping it secret and hiding in shame does nobody any good, teach others so they can avoid your mistakes....

as bad as the injury was, coming from someone who used to volunteer as a RSO and help teach firearm safety,
the psychological impact was far worse.

didn't carry a loaded gun for nearly 3 months, didn't want much to do with them for a while,
(I didn't have a LOT of choice since I sell firearms at work,) and when I did, the first time I must have spent 10 minutes going over that gun.

oh, and for lawlz, after the hollowpoint finished pulverizing my wrist, it decided it wanted to get friendly with my flat screen

sorry if I came off a little defensive,
I get soooo much shit from people who wouldn't know how to treat a pair of scissors safely, let alone a Firearm,
("You Shot yourself?!? Lawlz" and then brush me off like I don't know shit)
and I am a Safety Nazi when it comes to firearms, anyone who knows me can attest to this..... the irony is quite infuriating sometimes, so please if you have nothing positive to add, don't add anything at all
