As a young cowboy (named James Cannon) I grew restless on the farm. I was filled with wonderlust and really meant no harm. I changed my clothes, I shined my boots, and combed my dark hair down. My mother cried out as I walked out

"Don't take your guns to town son, leave your guns at home James, don't take your guns to town."

I laughed and kissed my ma and said "Your James Cannon's a man. I can shoot as quick and straight as anybody can. I wouldn't shoot without a cause. I'd gun nobody down." But... she cried again as I rode away. I sang a song as I rode, my guns hung at my hips. I rode into a cattle town, with a smile upon my lips. I stopped and walked into a bar and laid my money down. My mother's words echoed again... I drank my first strong liquor to calm my shaking hand. I tried to tell myself I had become a man! A dusty cowpolk at my side began to laugh me down! And... I heard my mother's words again. Filled with rage, then, I reached for my gun to draw. But the stranger drew his gun and fired before I even saw! As I fell down to the floor, the crowd gathered 'round. They wondered at my final words;
Don't take your guns to town, son. Leave your guns at home, James. Don't take your guns to town...

Went to clean my gun on the deck so grabbed my cleaning kit and sat down with my glock 45. Ran through the motions of disassembly (which of course requires pulling the trigger) and thats where my mistake was. Dropped the mag, racked the slide, put the mag in, racked the slide and squeezed that trigger. Bang. Hit my deck table, skimmed along the metal, through my dining room window, and hit the spindle of a chair at the dining room table. Speer Gold Dot was stopped by the spindle but blew that thing apart.

A negligent discharge sure does make you step back and take a look at complacency and firearm safety. I triple check everything and stick my fingertip down the barrel now. Lesson learned and it only cost me a chair. Others havent been so lucky.

Nope that's not it. Key points to look at are 1 the position of the elbow and 2 the angle of the torso and 3 the position of the stock. I'm not leaning into the gun properly which causes my shoulder to absorb all the recoil. My arm is not lifted properly to form a "hugging effect" if you will, which causes the gun to be positioned unsafely in my shoulder. Lastly the butt is too high on my shoulder. There you have it a noob and a shotgun haha.

The stupidest thing I have done with an AIR RIFLE? While working at Wally World some jackass had torn one out of the box and cocked it, so I decided to "fire" it to release the built up pressure. I didn't know those things were so loud :lol:

As for me, hmmm, I've had a couple A.D's when I was younger, as well as had my hand on top of a SKS bolt when being firing, I wasn't paying attention to what my hand was actually on and I pulled the trigger, got my fingers whacked in the action, no damage though.

Just because one is technically allowed to own firearms, doesn't mean one should. This thread is really going to scare me knowing some people have firearms.

Im a member of a firearms forum, and ive met and made friends with dozens. From what Ive heard of the many owners I know a negligent discharge is fairly common. I know of three cops that have, four if you count myself. People are careless, they multi task, they have other things on their minds. Mistakes happen. Weve had a few people on the forum post pictures of the accident they had where they shot themselves. I have to give them credit for the huge swingers they have. They made a mistake, got hurt because of it, and then put it up with all the bloody detail so others could take it to heart and learn from the painful mistake they had.

I shared my story knowing some would think less of me because of it. I dont see it that way. I think Im a safer person because of it. A fella I know shot through his trunk putting a rifle in its case at the gun range. Another shot through the floor of his car at the same range holstering his pistol. A good friend of mine while cleaning his XD45 shot the ceiling in his living room with his family in the next room. He freaked and wanted to sell his guns, thought he was a bad father. I asked him if he would ever make that mistake again. He damn near broke his neck shaking his head. So I asked why he would get rid of them. No one was hurt, it cost him some putty to fix the sheetrock, and he learned that complacency and firearms dont mix. His family didnt want him to sell them and said the same thing. Now he knows better and will slow down.

One of the cops shot into his floor with a .22 pistol. Another shot himself in the hand in a grocery store while on duty. That guy had been on the job for 17 years. Are you a dumbass for doing it? Yup. DO you deserve to lose your 2a rights? Of course not. Mistakes happen. Notice I call them a negligent discharge. Its not an accidental discharge. You didnt drop the gun and it went off, that would be an accident. In all the cases I know of, including my own, we pulled the trigger. Thats negligence. Unless you have an unsafe gun that really did go off, chances are its not an accident.

Think what you will. You can leave this thread thinking the world is full of dumbass gun owners, or you can leave taking a look at yourself and become a safer person. Ive seen NRA instructors sweep a class, you can always be safer.

Didn't happen to me but a friend of mine winged a 30.06 round past another friend's head close enough for him to hear the bullet buzz by. A couple of months later the other friend also had a ND with his 45-70 but the gun was safely pointed at the ground. First friend feels vindicated because they both had a ND. He's totally oblivious to the fact that there is a difference between shooting a hole in the ground and buzzing a friend's ear. :roll:

Needless to say, he's not allowed to handle firearms on my friend's property without very close supervision anymore.

Also, my dad, a LEO for 27 years, had a bad habit of clearing his gun and then testing it by pointing it at his bed and pulling the trigger. Until the day it went off. To my knowledge, that bullet is still in the mattress somewhere.

Threads like this are supposed to scare the shit out of you, I don't look at these people as retards that should never own a gun. I look at them as people who had a momentary distraction that could have had horrible ramifications. If some one reads this thread and is a little more careful next time they go to the range, Its a win in my book. Plus some of these are funny.

Just wanted to be clear with regard to the friend I talked about, it's not so much that he made a mistake. It's the fact that he refuses to own up to or even learn from his mistake. Also, this wasn't his first fuck up, just his scariest. He's just a careless person in general. If I had my druthers, he wouldn't be allowed behind the wheel either.

I bet the unexpected recoil of something like that left a stinging reminder to check the gun, check it again, and check once more. Been wanting to shoot one of those beasts!

The 45/70? Actually recoil wasn't bad at all. It was one of the big Quigley style sharps rolling blocks. The weight of the gun itself really made the recoil easy to take. Similarly, same friend also has a .375 h&h that is really heavy and to be honest my Mauser has a heavier kick.

I have a really close friend just like that. And the best part is he has no clue that he scares the crap out of everybody. He gets seriously butthurt if anyone questions his ability or offers up advice. Sometimes i am surprised he is still alive.

This is not about what I did but about a patient of my friends. My friend is a dentist who specializes in difficult teeth repairs.
He had this 15 yo male come in with a front tooth completely broken off at the jaw bone. My friend asked what happened?

The kid said he was running and tripped and hit his tooth. My friend replied that is really strange. Usually a tooth in that situation shears at an angle and never below the gum line. Also how could be break that one tooth so badly and not hurt the other teeth at all. So, the kid says don't tell my dad.

My friend was playing with a .22. It went off and hit my tooth. Booth the tooth and bullet stopped in my throat without hurting anything but the tooth. I coughed them up and was ok. True story.
