Zombie Squad hecklers?

Post by CryHavoc » Mon Mar 28, 2011 1:40 am

Has anyone ever run into a Zombie Squad heckler?

Last ChicagoLand meeting I was at, I left early to catch my brother and family for dinner. At the restaurant I was at, I had a couple of people make a few comments about the zombiehunters.org on the back of the t-shirt I was still wearing from the meeting. Ok, I thought, some people might get a kick out of it. I tried to explain about Zombie Squad, but that just made them laugh a bit more. Fair enough - not everybody gets it.

A couple of weeks later, I posted on another website a comment about Zombie Squad and got a response I wasn't sure I understood about 'not wanting to be around Zombie Hunters' and I thought the same thing as the other situation - fair enough.

But then I got an apology out of the blue from one of the other members of that board for the 'way I was treated' and I guess I didn't realize the situation was that big of a deal.

Has anyone else come across this?

And is it heckling?

If the person "heckling" knows what Zombie Squad is all about, Be Proud and Stand Tall...as the T-Shirt has given them pause. Pause enough to give themselves time to try and assuage the uncomfortable feelings brought about by the disaster they know they are not prepped for. Maybe they'll go home, listen to that quiet voice and start getting something together to "do for themselves". Hey, It could happen :)

On the other hand...maybe they were jerks, of one flavor or another, who needed to bring someone else lower in order to make themselves feel higher. My 12 year old deals with those kind in Elementary School, guess they never go away :)

I like to go with the first explanation.

And I'd like your leave to go for the remainder of this here 6-pack...

Many thanks for the generous permissiveness, *glug-glug-glug* -Juney-

Sounds like you might be taking it too seriously. Where is the fun in that?

The whole basis of the zombie metaphor is jocular to most people. When someone sees 'zombie' written on something, it grabs their attention, because zombies have become a subculture in their own right and are pretty popular. But ZS has a serious message, and some people just have trouble making the leap from Shaun of the Dead to stockpiling food.

My family, for example, was very receptive. I was talking to my dad about guns, and mentioned the ZS forums. He chuckled and said, "Zombie Squad?" And I went right into it. "Yeah, it's got a great community. The 'zombie' thing is just a comedic metaphor that makes prepping fun-- makes it easier for new preppers to get into it." It totally clicked with him. He thought it was a great idea, and it even made him say, "I've been pretty lax on preps. You know, I used to be prepared for everything.... /storytime" and it made him realize he needs to do more. All because the 'zombie' gave him pause.

Then there are the skeptics, like my mom-- she just couldn't shake the 'zombie' idea, and even though she agreed with the message, she had to roll her eyes every time it came up.

Everyone has some measure of reaction to the zombie preface. Usually, it serves to grab attention and pique interest-- and it's quite good at it, imo. But some folks just aren't willing to listen when it's explained. Yeah, it's heckling in a way-- most of it's just prejudice, someone passing judging our book by the size of its cover. Or title, I guess.

Two-edged sword, and all that.

I've had a couple people think it was silly. Shit happens. I think people who collect stamps or build tiny replica boats are probably asspie nuts. I think all these adults making giant Lego recreations of things need to get a life.

Different strokes for different folks. I don't care for some things, and not everyone will care for my 'things'.

If they want to ridicule me or ZS when I'm wearing a ZS shirt then... no skin off my back, /ignore works in real life too.

Folks have laughed at me and ridiculed me for being a prepper.

People laugh harder at the Zombie thing.

But at the end of the day, my stupid hobby will save my life and save my families. And if nothing happens, I've keep skills and traditions alive. Winning.

Their ship in a bottle and giant lego castle isn't going to help much......

I've been in a similar situation.

My wife and I each have a couple zombie hunter/killer shirts that we wear for fun and one night my parents stopped over and questioned us. My father knows about this site and started giving me the third degree. In short, I told him that it's a site about being prepared... zombies simply make it enjoyable. Then I showed him the Hot or Not thread because he appreciates gun porn.

To be honest, you'll always have people who have a poor initial reaction to things they don't understand or think are childish. Either they will want to educate themselves on it, or they won't. In the end, you'll just have to let it roll off your back.

People have laughed at me for the prepper thing, but it really doesn't bother me. I am a sales guy, so you learn to grow a thick skin, I follow the Kat Williams methodology without the weed, you know "Just Fuck it".

I have been cussed out over a T-shirt once in my life, but it wasn't a ZS one. It said "Just Speak the Language" on the back. A husband and wife went off on me while in line at Disney with my kids. I was cussed in French and Frenglish for a good three minutes about being a xenophobe, anti-immigrant, etc...I finally got a word and said, see the two ducks on the back? Yep, this shirt is from Primos duck calls, you know speak the duck language, you morons. They were so embarassed they left the line they had been waiting in for 30 minutes. :D

I will admit that the whole "zombie" thing kind of turned me off at first.
My basic thought was that this was going to be like some airsoft wannabe forum full of "1337" kids.
But once I started reading what you are all about, I could see and appreciate the depth and field of knowledge presented by the members and was most impressed by the all around level headedness. The maturity and low level of BS is the main thing that made me decide to join the forums. Although I admit I still am hesitant to mention "zombies" when discussing survival related topics with most acquaintances.

Never had that reaction. People ask about my ZS shirt all the time.

I need to get a new one. The one I have has worn very well but a second one int he rotation will help keep the wear cycle down.

Whenever I talk about the great information and charity work we do, I always refer to my "disaster preparedness group" because I got sick of the eyerolling and herp derp when I called it Zombie Squad. If I'm pressed for more information about the group I'll explain it and how zombies are a metaphor for being prepared for anything, but it's a hard sell if I start off with that first.
If the zombie apocalypse ever happens, I'm just going to surround my house with outward facing treadmills.
I should be fine.

That's kinda what I've been doing lately too, now that you mention it. I've also called it a "charity group" because people seem to identify with that aspect of ZS a lot more than with prepping. Plus it makes me seem like a real philanthropist.

Just a thought here. It would be great if they added a shirt to the store that sort of explained our philosophy. Not a long drawn out explanation mind you but something simple. Maybe the zs logo on the front and then on the back something along the lines of

Zombie Squad
Because if you're ready for zombies, everyday disasters are a piece of cake.

I know that's what we usually say but I thought people who don't know anything about us might need a little more clarification.

Got a few different reactions, most people think its odd, until I explain that in fact no we don't think zombies are real, its just a joke/metaphor for prepping and *insert examples* of why I prep. Most of em blow it off at that point, a couple listen up and you can kind of see the light bulb start to turn on.

Only negative reaction I had was someone in my family asking me if it was part of a white power/Neo Nazi group. I kind just blinked at em and laughed. Though, once I explained what it was in fact, he was really interested and agreed with me, may have made an account on here but I'm not sure.

Never been mocked in public though, the odd jabs at work yes, but we talk shit about everything so no surprise there.

This reminds me, I need a better stock answer to the, "But, you guys don't really believe in zombies, do you?" question. I've been using the "metaphor for disaster" line for too long. I'm leaning towards a glassy stare and a quiet, "You mean...you don't?" Followed by my impression of the Crypt Keeper's laugh, which is pretty damned good if I do say so myself.

Honestly I really don't. People tend not to talk shit about me when I'm in earshot. I just thought a shirt like I suggested might help people better understand and possibly be a starting point for a discussion. Thus spreading our message.

Of course, I don't really care whether people think I'm crazy either. In fact, in many cases I prefer it that way.

I'm from St. Louis... they know us here. :)
Honestly, though, the whole point of the zombie thing is to get attention. It's working! Use it to explain what we do. Make it funny. I tell people we keep them safe from zombies. When they say they've never seen one, say thank you. :)
There are only so many things you can say about a zombie squad. Be prepared for their questions, make them laugh, then explain what we do.
