Totally Hypothetical...

Post by Humblesteve » Mon Jun 18, 2012 12:19 am

Ok, lets say... I have this friend. And my friend totally got married last month (don't worry, it was amazing). So this friend, he registered on REI. And he may have found they sell shock cord by the foot. So what would he do, but register for 80 feet of shock cord. He thought it was a cheap gift, and who would buy all 80 feet? So my friend throws it on the list. Three months later he (my friend) is unboxing gifts and there is an 80 foot roll of shock cord in his gifts. So my friend is now faced with a difficult question:

What the hell do I do with 80 freaking feet of shock cord?

More importantly, what would you do with that much shock cord?

The only thing I can think of is to make carabiner bungee cords.

Oh, and replace sections of your paracord guy lines with it - extra reach for little to no extra weight.

Some of these have been really awesome. In case somebody didn't know, this is what we're talking about: http://www.rei.com/product/624074/shock ... lack-nylon" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I like the squirrel catapult, spiderman stunts, and replacing parts of rope and cord to make them stretchy. Googling Shibari darkened my soul just a little bit, but it's a small cost for asking a question like this on ZS.

Does anybody have any experience with this stuff? I'm determined to use it, but I did kinda leap before I looked. I'm thinking about lacing some into some unused MOLLE webbing on my IBA to make a mini bungee net for quickly stuffing and deploying items. Just like 2x2 or 4x4.

Other thoughts?

Shibari can be fun, but I'm not sure the mods will want me giving out tips on that here. They do have schools, and I bet they could even set you up with a couple's class. It's also properly called kinbaku.

wrap all his knife handles in shock cord, then his machete, then his hatchet, and then his rifle stock. If any is left over break out the katana and do the handle on it too (if it wasn't already wrapped in blue wire first)

Speaking from personal experience, that way lies either hilarity or life-threatening danger and the distance between them is TINY. You can do totally hilarious things with elastic cord. Those things can turn potentially fatal with nary but a twang of warning.

Hi. Maybe you can make restraints out of them. You can attach it on shelves or such so things wouldn't fall out. We used to have those in our storage cabinets since they tend to overflow and stay open. Those cords made things more orderly, and kept the doors closed.

Image

If you can, you can even make some sort of net restraint for larger items. A friend of ours used a net made of it on his truck, to hold large boxes in place.

Image

Anyhoo, hope that gave you some idea that you can use. :)

Roll it back up and put it in a cupboard or drawer. Seriously. You will stumble across the wierdest things/moments for the next 20 years where that stuff will come in handy. It'll get all used up without even trying. Then you'll have to go get more. Like duct tape. You never hear "I have too much duct tape, how do i use it up?"

Though some of these suggestions made asking worthwhile anyway.

My buddy is getting married this summer and when I asked what he wanted for his gift he answered "Nothing explosive unless it's very stable." His new bride may be surprised when she discovers what tannerite is.

Shit that's what that stuff is?
I found a giant spool of it in my garage about 6 months ago, I thought it was just normal bungie cord. I swear I've got more than 300 feet of that cord. My dad bought it when he was alive.
Maybe he was trying to say something?
Anyways, thanks for the info friends!

Assuming his wife was new to these things, it may be an easy way to start.

"See, honey? You can just pull right out of it! Nothing to worry about!"

And as she gets comfortable with it, you 'run out' of shock cord and 'have to' use your repelling rope...

Is his wife hot? He should send us pics. Yes... Pics, or it didn't happen...
