Another vote for WalMart. I watched people get hauled out of the one here bloody and handcuffed after a fight erupted over a flat of bottled water. This was the day before Gustav hit. All we got here was a hard rain. People were still going apeshit with fear, even though nothing had yet happened or was going to happen.

Right before Hurricane Rita hit, a friend of my daughter's got to see two women fistfight over the last flat of bottled water in the local Walmart. It would be a bad place to be when something hit the fan!

Some places that come to mind...

1. Any big city
2. In the bathroom/shower
3. On the top of a ferris wheel
4. In space (astronaut)
5. Large sporting events

There's an unspoken belief among the users of this forum.
"That which was once dead should remain dead and should it once again walk the earth, duty decrees that it must be sent back from whence it came. Preferably in the most bad-ass way possible. "

I would assume this applies to dinosaurs.

Actually, prison wouldn't be a half bad place to be. There are officers armed in towers, multiple fences (some are leathal electric), and very few entryways, all of which are double or triple doors (aka sallyports). As long as the contaigion was not brought inside. The only ways for inmates to get sick is if a staff member brings the infection in or new arrivals are already infected. There is enough food on hand to last a a while, plus a 3 month emergency storage. If commercial power is shut off most prisons have back up power plants with enough fuel for 3 months.
Once the infection got inside though, yeah, f-that.

I believe it goes without saying that anytime you remove yourself a significant distance from your normal base of operations, you place yourself at a disadvantage. The further you are from home, the weaker your position, particularly if that is where your loved ones are. Given some sort of sudden, unexpected disaster, I think I could bug-in from Wal-Mart or my job without too much drama. Twenty miles or more from home, and I think a little planning would be necessary before moving.

A cruise ship in the middle of the ocean would be a pretty terrible place to be should sudden massive death and destruction rain down upon the mainland. You know that news of the event would get through, and those onboard would lose their collective minds. Then, as if dealing with the onboard panic wasn't enough, you have to actually contend with the disaster once you make landfall.

I second that Bottomgottem. Any vacation would be horrible timing for SHTF. Especially if you had to take a plane to get there, meaning no firearms, and likely hundreds or thousands of miles from your home. I wonder what the best reaction to this scenario would be? Rent a car? Buy a gun? What if you can't? One thing is for sure, having a good amount of cash on hand will improve your position and increase your leverage with the locals!

There have been threads that discuss places where you would want to be when it all goes.south for what ever reason. What about places where you would not want to be.

For me this is a useful topic. One I periodically ponder in my "What if an immediate without warning big 'event' began" mental games. I usually think like; 3 Mile Island/Japanese earthquake then tidal wave then nuclear plant/Joplin MO types of scenarios

Wal-mart... right. Last minute 'gathering of stuff' there would be insane/useless/possibly dangerous.

Hospital... didn't think of that one, although I did see that in a pandemic that would not be a place to go after it had taken on momentum.

Big gatherings of people... would that depend on the 'event' in progress? If I am in a big crowd when the 'event' begins, I want to get out of that crowd quickly, right? Like that state fair mentioned. But after? In the smaller localized event do I not want to actually find groups? Not, I see now, the hospital or where people are making a run on supplies, but somewhere, right?

I've been puzzling on questions similar this OP post: In an event that is localized and not a wrol scenario, don't I want to find as good a group as I can for safety in numbers to align with until the 'outside' can begin the rescue efforts? Obviously being discrete with my get home and/or bug out/in bags I hopefully have in hand, plus throwing in that I am less than survivalist material at this point in preparedness, and that I have issues with back and knees so my BOB & get home bags are innocuous & wheeled backpacks. I'm talking urban as I am city. Or is my thinking flawed here due to lack of education on the matter?

I'm one of the officers. We have contingency plans for most catastrophic events. Our goals are public safety, staff safety, then inmate safety. I'm not sure what is public information so I can't discuss some of options we have for, N.B.C. attacks, pandemics, etc. But it is safe to say that, I get to go home, and the inmates don't.

The state fair is up there, walmart, church. Most places where there are large numbers of people without guns. :)

I'll second what Teqnikal said. I'm an officer in a prison as well and there emergency plans for nearly everything. Although I do think I'd get a kick out of watching zombies try and take on our electric perimeter fence.

I have a high level of trust in the people I work with and believe I would be going home safely.

Generally it's a time release lock, I think. Improper decompression is very hazardous, as well as more likely than you needing to evacuate a sinking decompression chamber.

Where I work, NYC or one of the 5 boroughs.

That said I have my home routes and alternatives well planned. My EDC bag (which is also my GHB) is optimized for getting home safely.

Worst place to be that is a likely possibility for me?

On a business trip, stuck at an airport somewhere while changing flights. My checked baggage with my basic gear is somewhere unknown and inaccessible (such as intransit on a cart between gates on the flightline), and the only items with me are whatever managed to clear TSA. This would be bad.

Next question- what could you buy within the security perimeter (say at Hudson News or equivalent) which could make a difference in this situation? Comfy neck pillows? Snowglobes? the latest issue of "Dog Fancy"?

Good luck.

What about a store like Bass Pro Shops? (depending on the type of SHTF, that is :P )

I recently started working in a Bass Pro Shop store and it's definitely a go to place for any type of preparation for any type of disaster. Weapons, camping and hunting things, medkits, and storage food. Almost everything. I think it'd be a pretty bad place to be.

I'm new, btw.
