One and Run.....choices of just one firearm and caliber

Post by 0002S » Sun Jul 04, 2010 9:55 am

Common guys at the range question: “so, which one would you take if you could only take one”

I usually reply that “it’s the caliber choice 1st followed by the type of gun.” At least that’s the way I see it.

So for sake of argument:
What if you COULD ONLY have 1,2,3, or 4 gun choices depending on type of survival need, ability to carry and reasonable time to get it all together?

I am of the school that the best course of action is to AVOID THE ACTION. So personal defense is very important, but secondary to ability to provide food, carry weight, “scrounge-ability” of ammo and so on.

1 GUN ONLY
30.06 is my choice of caliber.
Weight for ammo is Heavy but manageable
Ability to shoot and kill any game in North America is High
Ability to scrounge up ammo is High
Ability to use as defensive ammo is High
Ability to reload easy and with variety of components High

MY FIREARM CHOICE FOR THIS: M1 Garand
Great blend of hunting, defense, and durability
(other choices: .308, .223, .22LR, 45 ACP, 9mm, 12 guage – but I feel that these don’t stack up nearly as well to the 30.06 in a M1 Garand)

2 GUNS
M1 Garand – 30.06
Ruger MKIII – .22LR

3 GUNS
AR-15 A1 16" - .223
Ruger MKIII – .22LR
870/590 – 12 gauge

4 GUNS
AR-15 A1 16”- .223
Ruger MKIII – .22LR
870/590 – 12 gauge
Glock – 9mm

What are your choices?
Ho, there, foul monster!

This has actually been done about 300 times around here but I'll bite:

I am assuming that you're referring to some sort of very unlikely but remotely possible PAW scenario and not a run of the mill disaster. If I could take only 1 firearm (why I could take only 1 of my firearms, I have no idea), it would be my Remington 870 with 18.5" barrel and mag tube extension (6+1 shell capacity). It provides the widest range of capabilities from small game hunting to large game hunting to defence.

If I could take two, I'd take my Remington 870 and my Remington 597 (.22LR). The 870 for the reasons above and the .22LR because ammo is incredibly light weight and can handle a wide range of small game.

If I could take three, I'd take the 870 and the 597 as described above but I'd take a pistol (probably my .357 as well).

If I could take four, I'd take three - there is no sense in getting loaded down with too many firearms and ammo.

If we're talking about a world overrun with zombies/space aliens/etc....also, as I mentioned, I don't see myself as ever being limited in that way. My disaster planning focuses on bugging in - I'd have access to all of my firearms. If I have to bug out, my firearms go with me in my BOV.

1 - 9mm S&W M&P. The lights will eventually turn on, and remaining low key is paramount in avoiding trouble from the get go.

2 - 20" A2 AR15, 9mm S&W M&P. The most plentiful rifle platform in terms of magazines, ammunition, and spare parts in America.

3 - Ruger Mark 3 pistol, 20" A2 AR15, S&W M&P. Because I suck at throwing sticks at rabbits and squirrels to kill them for food. .22LR ammo is insanely bountiful, cheap, and effective on small game.

3 - M1 Rifle, Ruger Mark 3 pistol, 20" A2 AR15, S&W M&P. Because in this case I've got multiple people with me, things are going to be really bad for a really long time, and we're hoofing it west. Bigger game at farther distances than what I feel I could drop and not have to track for a long distance when compared to the AR15.

Seriously though, people really overestimate how well they can move, and for how long, with lots of gear. A pistol and a long gun of some sort is basically pushing it, and 3 or 4 you'd better have multiple people to spread the load out and gain more trigger fingers. Not to mention the extra calibers to feed all of the extra firearms.

Well I haven't got it built yet but Id take an AK in 223, the round is plentiful, I have an adapter from my old 223 AK for the AR/M16 mags and the AK is always my go to gun.
I might be in the basement. I'll go upstairs and check.

1 my main gun yugo AK built like a brick shit house

2 guns add my mossberg 590a1

3 guns i would add my AR to the equation

4 guns add my XD45

5 guns add the snubby .357

i pick the AK as the main gun because i have so much ammo for it and a ton of mags as well, also the yugo AK is accurate enough and can drop any game in my AO

Since you mentioned "carrying" all of them, it would be something along the lines of:

If I had a good .22LR revolver, I would carry it instead of the 22/45.

My AR cleaning kit, with a .45 brush and jag added, could cover them all.

Only one? I'm taking my Ruger .22 pistol with the integral can. Easy to carry, looks like a target pistol, use won't attract attention due to the suppressor, ammo is common and plentiful, and it'll take game or protect me enough to survive.

I'll probably get kicked in the nuts for this, but I'd likely grab my Sub2K in 9mm (G17mags)

9mm is plentiful and fairly light.
Sub2K is lightweight, accurate out 100yds, fast to reload, folds in half to easily conceal.

While not the highest in quality, it would be my first choice.

As we live in town, I'm thinking that a long gun would make me a target for the looters, uniformed and otherwise.
So, I'd probably take my XD45. I'd hesitate for a moment and consider my .357 Dan Wesson as I'm a bit more accurate at longer ranges with it, but I wouldn't know for sure until the time came.
Ammo on hand would have an effect on my decision, as right now I'm not real well stocked on .357, though I do have a couple hundred rounds of .38+P JHPs.
I have more .45acp than I'd care to carry, though, and I have enough rounds through the XD that I'll be confident that it'll do its job if I do mine.

Probably my USP 9mm. It's the gun I shoot the most and I've got a lot of 9mm ammo.

It's got to be a handgun because you need to keep it concealed. 9mm is plentiful and easy to shoot. Glock for the win!

I'd take a 12g shotgun, ammo is plentiful, available everywhere, covers most average shooting instances, good for hunting, house clearing, point and shoot, knock down power, versital ammo, lock and door opener, and can be fired by almost anyone (kids, women, newbies, etc). Probably the best weapon ever made. IMO

I carry a Remington 870 Express Magnum.

2 guns my 870 and an M14, plenty of 7.62 ammo to be had, accurate 800+ m (with optics) and has a good cyclic rate 700–750 rounds/min.

3 Guns my 870, M14 and a .45 1911 a1 pistol, good stopping power ammo fairly easy to find.

Plus the above weapons are reliable.

I'll play.
1 Gun: Why am I in a scenario where I have to pick only 1 gun? Things must be very bad. Sig 522 22LR and tons of ammo.
2 Guns: + Saiga 12 Gauge
3 Guns: Sig P226 9 MM
4 Guns: Some kind of long range gun I don't have yet in 308.

1 gun: CZ452 FS in .17hmr, I've got 1200 rounds, and that is easily carried. 17hmr will take lots of things up to medium game. But it's a bolty, so it's slow.
2 guns: Much more likely I might add. CZ for game getting and Zed dispatching within' 200 yards. Then my Glock 19 for defense, 9mm is everywhere.
3 guns: Were getting crazy here, CZ, G19, then my AK74. Good all around kill things/fire fight gun. Ammo not so common in the US, but I've got a few thousand rds. That's a lot harder to carry, and the AK would most likely reside at my BOL - which is my home. The way I see it, if I get myself into a situation where I need my AK to defend myself, I'm in some deep ish...
4 guns: CZ, G19, AK74, and my Mossberg 1100, gimme bird shot and we have dove/quail for dinner. Gimme slugs and we have anything in North America for dinner. Gimme Buckshot and I'll blow any fool away.

Thinking about it, 3 and 4 should be switched, but my AK is a helluva lot easier to carry, even with a few full mags.

Realistically:

1. Remington 870 (12 gauge)

2. WASR-10 (7.62x39mm Soviet)

3. Ruger 10/22 with x4 scope (.22 Long Rifle)

4. CZ-75 (9x19mm Parabellum)

I'll play.

I'm tepmted to take only a 1911 .45 thinking that if it's as bad as all that, I will need to move quickly. I can always pick up an ar or ak or 870 left over on "the battlefield" since, you know, there are always mounds of pristine gunslying around after every engagement.

Seriously, my first thought was to take the Swiss Army Knife of guns, the 870 12 ga. I'd still go with that if open carry would not single me out as a target.

Otherwise I'd go with the 1911.

1: 870 12 ga
2: 870 12 ga, 1911 .45
3: 870 12 ga, 1911 .45, AR .223
4: 870 12 ga, 1911 .45, AR .223, AK and a chiropractor to realign my spine after humping all of this!
