Quick, defend yourself: What do you have on hand RIGHT now?

Post by Meat N' Taters » Thu Oct 08, 2009 1:35 pm

If this is a repeat, please delete it. The search function didn't yield anything, but it may have been done to death already. Also, I'm not sure if this should go in WWYD or the Firearms forum...

Anyhow, I know almost everyone on here, myself included, has a gun we're building, wanting to buy, fixing, waiting to get back from the gunsmith, or what have you. And a lot of us are in the process of stockpiling ammo, extra magazines, etc. Well, a partially built gun, a broken gun, and a gun that we don't own yet don't do a damn bit of good if the shit hits the fan right this second. Neither does ammo that we intended to buy but haven't yet.

I just thought that it would be interesting if each of us took a good, honest look at how well prepared we are at this exact moment with regard to our battery of firearms, ammunition, and other weaponry. If the SHTF right now, how well armed are you? I guess since specifics are needed, we'll go on the assumption that you are at your home/BOL/wherever your main cache of arms is, zombies/roving bands of rabid hyenas/generic evildoers are all around and your goal is to defend your self/family for an extended period of time, let's just say a month. Don't worry about food/water/other supplies, let's keep this discussion about weaponry.

I'll start.

Inventory:

1) .357 with around 400ish rounds of .357/.38 JHP ammo of various bullet weights (would be closer to 600, but I've been shooting at the range a LOT lately without replacing my ammo like an idiot).
2) 20 gauge pump with 4 and a half boxes of dove shells.
3) Scoped bolt-action .30-06 with 6 rounds.
4) Scoped bolt-action .243 with no ammo.
5) Single-shot bolt-action .22LR with probably around 200 rounds.
6) Ka-Bar and a Cold Steel boar hunting knife - both useless to me since I know nothing about how to defend myself with a knife beyond random slashing/stabbing.

So, in summation, I have one good defensive handgun, two hunting rifles that are either out of ammo or close to it, one shotgun that is meant for killing tiny birds, and a single-shot plinker. There are two of us at our house, so no matter what, one of us is going to be stuck with a PDW that is fairly shitty. I think that I'd have to hope for the zombies/civil unrest to end quite quickly, and I'm not sure I'd make it a month on what i have.

This segues into my original point about guns that we don't own yet being useless. I will probably be buying an SKS very soon as a defensive weapon to supplement my .357. So, in my little mind, I've been kinda justifying the lack of .357 rounds by thinking "oh, I'll have the SKS soon enough, and then I can start stockpiling thousands of rounds of that cheap foreign ammo for it!". Doesn't do a damn bit of good. Nonexistent SKS FTL. :(

I have a Springline stapler with about 10,000 staples. A roll of Scotch tape, 6 clip boards, and a computer monitor. Two pairs of pliers and a 1 1/4 wrench.

I am 10 feet from a loaded walther P99 in .40 if I am downstairs.
I am 20 feet from a loaded Bersa Thunder .380 if I am upstairs. It is always in a keypad pistol safe - battery operated in case of power outage.
Next to the bed is the unloaded AK47. There are loaded magazine's hidden all over the house.

6" knife in the field bag that's kinda beat up
2" diameter structural hex bolt x 12" long... heavy bastard. Nice paper weight though.

I'm wearing steel toed boots and I imagine it'll crack some shins or knees pretty good.

Otherwise I'm pretty well effed against anything serious.

you said right now.

At work I have the back scratcher of doom. It is a 1/2 inch forged iron bar with 2 decorative twists and at one end is a 2 inch scratching surface. If yer not careful when you scratch your back with it it ripps hair out.

That and a lava lamp

Home has an iron bar; I use it to bar the door at night, so it's always to hand. If I was at work I'd have to strangle my assailant in CAT5 cable.

The archery kit is for sport, not defence. Sundry cutlery and toys, at a pinch. The cat would trip them up.

I likes my big iron bar.

At work:

Leatherman Wave
Office phone
Lots of blunt swingy hurty stuff in the gym a few feet away

At home:

Geez, you guys make me miss not having kids, when I could just have loaded firearms laying everywhere.
Anyway, got the 92FS in the GunVault by the bed with 2 mags full of Critical Defense ammo.
Remington 1100 police with SureFire under the top quilt in the chest on the wife's side of the bed. Eventually, the kid will get big enough to lift the lid and the shottie will have to be locked up, but that's a ways away yet.

As for everything that is available , well , I am not gonna get into that ....

But , as I type this , i am in my home office/war-room , so , let's see what is in reach . :D

Kryptonite U-Lock
Bark River Bravo- 1
Benchmade push knife
Cup of coffee
Jumprope
Roll of ductape
Glock 19 loaded with Speer GoldDots

That's what's on the desk . I also have my EDC stuff in my pockets , so add a couple more knives.

I am about 7 feet away from the closet that contains my gunsafe , so , I could be into that in less than minute if I had to .

"Right now" makes for a better thread. Since I'm at work, all I have is a small pocket knife. [Can't Carry in a Gov. building]

I could however turn the paper cutter into a crude machete if need be.
