Only time I see the rest of my family is around the holidays and even then I'm hiding in my bedroom watching reruns of "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" or finding some other reason to avoid my brothers and their wives.

I only have my wife and adult kids, and my 2 cousins who i haven't seen in years. She still has ants uncles and a slew of cousins. We last saw them at the wake for her father's sister 3-4 years ago. So it would be a very small family gathering. Only my son and I are weapons savvy so we'd all wind up zed chow.

My family doesn't require an hour for me to see chaos take place when there's any sort of get-together. Probably like most people.

Technically, however... if my family IS at a get-together, it usually means none of us are likely to be within many hours of our homes... or within 99.95% of any even *potential* preps we might have at our hands under regular circumstances.

Also, any such area of gathering is likely to be one that most of us, if not all, are mostly unfamiliar with (because if we're going to get together, it may as well be somewhere cool or interesting to whoever is deciding where it will be. ) ..Generally without any advance notice, good communication, or any type of research about the location beyond someone's third-person account of, "oh hey there's X, y, or z that's in that area I think maybe"... which is exactly why I almost always take a backpack with me despite hearing things about always taking a backpack with me in those situations.

It's pretty rare anyone else even thinks to grab tactical crackers or an extra water bottle for what almost always turns into a full day trip without any know reststops that are a certainty. Considering we frequently have several young children that get dragged along with those things along with us adults, it seems pretty dumb that I'm often the only one who thinks about those things- like dehydration or sunstroke. or the chattering teeth of frozen kids due to swimming without changes of clothes or any kind of towel to dry off with before it's even truly summer and a strong cold breeze- being a problem.

I feel like it's a movie wherein one by one someone have to die and only one will survive. I am 100% sure that I will try to save my Mom and use any weapon that is available at home. My grandpa has a riffle in the storage room.

So I’m at a family get together and a mob of zombies shows up. I’d be torn between getting my hands on weapons to protect family while they reach safety. And tripping certain others to occupy the horde while family makes it to safety. I’m not proud of it but some lives are more important to me than others. Many of my family are in the habit of carrying at least in our vehicles, so with a little warning we might be able to handle the horde.

My family get-togethers tend to be chaotic in the best of times. Zombies turning up would be a positive relief.

As far as preparedness, my decade-long efforts to get my extended family to take some basic emergency preparedness measures have been for naught. Protecting my wife and kids are the first priority. But ultimately, I'm reconciled to the fact that most of my family members are going to have to reap the consequences of refusing to make preparedness a priority.

None of us would believe they were real zombies till it was too late. We'd be massacred.

Now, if we could somehow tweak the scenario to magically bypass the fatal period of disbelief, the massacre would be in reverse. It would take an incredible number of zombies to overrun my extended family. Especially the ladies. Too many of them have worked cattle, construction, or as industrial mechanics, and have the ferocity to scare the men they work with. I don't think they would even waste ammo on shamblers. They would just start swinging bar stools.

After growing up with such fearsome female rolemodels, moving to a liberal college town was real weird.

Family get togethers for my clan are few and far between, and exclusively held at one of our very rural properties. It always seems to break down into a guns and ammo show and tell - having a few dozen people burn through your ammo is expensive, thus the few and far between.
The biggest concern in this scenario is convincing folks to take turns so we can count hits - no way to score when it's a free for all.
