What ammo to choose while in Svalbard?

Post by The Twizzler » Mon Jan 21, 2019 8:45 pm

So you have to go to Svalbard Island which is North of Norway for business reasons. Since they have a lot of polar bears you are required to purchase a bolt action rifle and ammo when you get there and take it around with you. You don't know what ammo they have or even if it's just regular FMJ. You assume the rifle will be used (probably very used) as that's what is available to you at this time (for reasons). You can only carry one rifle with you. You need to make a decision on what they probably have and not on what you would want.
Probable list: 30-06, 308, 7.62x54R, 8mm Mauser, 6.5 Swede, 7.5x54mm French, 30-40 Krag

So you know where it is.

My understanding is that they use Mausers re-barreled in .30 -06.

That said I would ask the people I am visiting in addition to the usual questions about proper attire (Business, business casual or plant) and recommended hotel.

The ones you rent I understand are .30-06 but if you follow all their rules you can BYOG so long as it is a similar power level.

The TV series Fortitude is based loosely on Svalbard. Early in the show the local sheriff takes a handgun away from a tourist and makes him carry a rifle. My kind of place except for (spoiler below)

Of those... while 30-06 will certainly do the job, I’d choose .308 since I can get some pretty high velocity rounds with heavy weight bullets with modern powder. Or roll my own.

That said, since polar bear basically = grizzly bear, I’d feel a lot more comfortable carrying something chambered in a rifle round that starts with a .3 (or better yet .4) and has the word “magnum” at the end.

My Dane ancestors would roll over in their graves if they knew I went to Norway armed and didn't loot and pillage. Best if I stay home.

I'd go .30-06 for pure ballistics.

But if I'm getting a beater surplus 8mm Mauser or Mosin, I'd like those for Arctic conditions.

So I voted x54r for some sweet Mosin action.

We know the Mosin works well in those conditions, so I actually think I’m with jeeper here.

Looks like there are one or two stores that will rent you a rifle. My quick and dirty search for "Svalbard rental rifles" turned up a couple of Mausers.....one OG and one "sporterized".

If you're buying, the options are a little better.

Plus, nothing goes better on those cold nights than a bottle of Vodka that comes standard with the Mosin

Nice research Rick o Shea. . I think it's interesting that you basically have to use a milsurp. The question would be iron sights or scope. If it's anything but 7.62x54r I am probably going with Irons. The Mosin sights always seem a bit off in my experience. Any thoughts from others? I would prefer either the Mauser or Enfield Irons from personal experience though I have never fired a rifle in Swede or French caliber.

My m44 sights were badly off until I scrubbed the barrel with a super solvent. So it actually wasn't the sights, it was a crusty cosmoline barrel.

My m44 can tag clay pidgeons at 100 yards offhand. So that's what, 5 moa offhand?? Good enough for most anything in my book.

But I have shot some 91/30s that I couldn't get on paper but they weren't mine to attempt to dial in.

That being said, 60% of the time, Mausers work all the time. Tough to beat a Mauser.

i consider all the choices as too light for charging polar bear . So I went with 7.5*54mm French . I really liked the Mas 36. Might as well go out with a rifle in hand you like. Plus the 36 has one of the slickest actions I've ever cycled. The rifles came standard with a adjustable peep sight and coupled with the handiness of the size, weight and balance, it always seemed to just naturally point.
As of now I bet you got me wrong

Sumtin on the internet sayz:
In 1941, Britain and Free France occupied Syria, bringing thousands of MAS-36 rifles with them. When French forces departed from Syria in 1946, the rifles were given to the Syrian Armed Forces in order to arm their own army and militias, as the Syrian government at the time was perceived as pro-western. The MAS-36 was widely used by Syrian forces in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. The Israeli victory and later, a coup in Syria led to Syria's loyalty shifting towards the Soviet Union instead of western countries. After purchasing large quantities of Soviet weapons in the 1950s and 1960s, the MAS-36 became obsolete with thousands of units being sent into government storage facilities. In 2011 during the Syrian Civil War, Syrian opposition forces captured thousands of the stored rifles. With nearly all of the rifles being still operational, the Free Syrian Army widely used the MAS-36 from 2011 to 2015. From 2015 onward, the Free Syrian Army is decreasing the use of the MAS-36 due to scarcity of the rifle's needed 7.5mm ammunition.
