My Convoy... if I had to make a convoy, it would consist of:

4x "Flat nose" style buses. All the windows along the driver's side and the rear would be covered in sheet metal. The drivers side window would be on a hinge that locks on the inside. Along this same side would be roof mounted C-wire. Each would also have front and rear gunner platforms. Roof entry ladders would be inside. Each bus would have an on-board generator, lots of deep cycle battiers, and top mounted flood lights. The stronger lights would be directed to the drivers side. There would be flop down sheetmetal along the rear and driver's side so no zombies could crawl under the buses, as zombies are too stupid to just lift the metal up.

At night, these would form a corral, with the nose end of one bus up against the rear quarter on the other. The emergency exits would serve as entry doors for the scouts during shift change.

BUS 1 - The barracks. Rows and rows of bunk beds. Underneath storage would contain clothes washing equipment and grey water storage for the washers.
BUS 2 - The infirmary. Isolation rooms would also be in this bus. Underneath would store emergency cots and everything needed for a triage center.
BUS 3 - The command center. Front half would contain meeting room and com center. Back half made into a chicken coop and goat stalls. The underside would contain portable fencing to make a yard for them to roam, and the tools needed to build the privvy.
BUS 4 - The kitchen. It would be powered off of generator powered electricity. Underside would store potable water, and some table and chairs. In the kitchen would also be supplies for any camp-fire BBQ.

3x Military style Humvees or similar vehicles. These are the scout vehicles. At night, these would be on roving patrols. During the day and on the move, one as a scout, one as the convoy lead, and one at the rear.

Refueling Truck This would look just like the Mad Max one, and be left out of the corral at night, a couple hundred yards away. No one would want the explosion of this thing taking out the whole squad. Of course, tho it is full of diesel so isn't likely to explode, but it just won't fit in the corral. One man would stay aboard as a lookout.

I'm concerned that you over-estimate the size of one of those buses.

I'm new to this but im going with staying put..

A 13 acre semi underground facility shaped like a 6 sided arrow head and surrounded by a 30' deep, 30' wide dry moat. One way in/out. Solar powered wireless mesh CCTV cameras looking down the moat with motion activated alarms an IR lamps. Rooms built into the outer sides of the moats (you would have to go into the building, down some stairs, through a tunnel under the moat and up again to get into them) with rifle slots so you can see/shoot along all edges without being exposed.

80,000 gallons of water storage tanks on site along with a rain water capture and filter system. On the inside of the moat, raised earth mounds to give a protected firing/observation position and many small, underground store rooms. Underground concrete rooms tend to stay cool all year round so would be ideal for food stores. Automatic and manual override counter balanced raise and lower drawbridge to enable scout/recon parties to leave with ease.

13 acres of above ground, well drained soil to produce food and raise livestock. On to of the highest point in the area to give great views and make a fantastic observation point. I would also throw in 3-4 wind turbines to generate on-site power and maybe some kind of solar thermal heating system.

Now, like I said, I'm new here but I think a building like this would be ideal as a long term stronghold and could probably support a community of around 100 people? Due to the design, very easy to defend from the undead with only a few ZS members.

What do you think?

I have the absolute PERFECT "fortress" that is both accessible and absolutely easy to defend. I'm working on a story now that has the plan featured in it so I'm not yet ready to spill it... but let's say it has what you need:

- Fenced in
- Easy to get in and out (as a normal human)
- Will take in vehicles of all types (including a helicopter on the roof)
- Has underground escape access
- Sealed and very reinforced doors/windows

It's the first place I would go in a Z scenario. Which is why I'm having my characters go there. I'll post more later on once the story takes more shape.

This is my fortress, the pic was taken while construction was still going on. The logs are red cedar 6 inches thick. The basement is made with 12 inch blocks. There is lumber under the porch and in the basement so I can board up the windows and doors. There is a ramp to the front porch that can be dropped, and steps on the back that can be dismantled. There is a fence that cirlces the property and a gate at the end of the drive way.

I still say the easiest and quickest for me would be the jail......I am a jailer and have the keys........we are a small jail and hold only about 50 people, so I would have to figure out what to do with them..........multiple, bulkhead style lockgates, craptons of food, meds, guns, etc

One thing I have learned, always have at least two people on watch at a time. One stays with the truck at all times (Or guardhouse for my case) and one person is the roving patrol or goes out to investigate anyhing suspicious.

Zephir,

You can't bug out to a school. It's gun free zone. You'll get suspended.

What do you think?

For you bunker types: http://www.missilebases.com/

Now playing along with the premise of if I coulds:
CONVOY style - not realistic considering security and fuel but anywho
2 scouts
1 blockade runner
1 command
1 fuel truck
1 supply truck
2 fighters
All Diesels that could run bio as well.

The scouts would be a Light Duty and a Midrange duty truck.
The blockade runner would be a modified with cowplow etc semi tractor.
The command, think along the lines of a 28' Motorhome that has had the A-Team crawling over it for a few weeks.
Fuel and Supply trucks are both Semi trucks with trailers, most likely ignoring trailer rules for multiples.
The two fighters, one will be a semi as well to backup or assist the supply and fuel trucks as needed with grades. The other will be one of those semi wreckers to help clear things or recover stuff.

STAYING PUT
House fortifications are a must, see bunker link above.
Remote location is a must.
Farmable land is a must.
Enough food and ammo supplies to last the dead seige is a must.

ULTIMATE CONVOY
2 Nuke Powered Carriers, one of which as converted it's deck to roof top gardening.
3 Nuke Subs to scout coast lines
2 Cruisers to protect the carriers
1 Oil Tanker to fuel the cruisers

IN THE SPIRIT OF THE OP
I got enough beanie weanies and .22 rounds to hold off the world
If I run low, I can just pop over to Walmart for more.

Sure thing, do you take Yeti Dollars

No just in my mind that would result in the ultimate convoy for survival. Think about use an oil rig for rest area. Perhaps blow the Key bridge and clear one island for a Port Call location.

Besides the OP started the dream big with the Home Depot truck.

1 vehicle. a Fedex truck (Freightliner with a Cummins ISB inline 6 diesel). Why?

-I used to work at Fedex and I can (clears throat) "acquire" one fairly easily.
-Diesels are more fuel efficient.
-Diesel is combustible, but not flammable. Also doesn't evaporate as fast.
-Lots of torque
-rear roll up door with step bumper. If you need supplies, back up to your local supermarket, gun shop, strip joint, etc. put the bumper against the building. Unroll door. The clearance between wall of truck and building is too thin for people (zombies) to squeezee through. You can also modify the back end by welding grates up from the ends of bumper to eliminate this. Use brick to break windows, or whatever. access building.
-front sliding doors. Doors don't swing out. Windows are high up. Windows slide open. Providing that zombies can't jump or climb, you are pretty much impenetrable.
-Big solid steel bumpers.
-Door from cab to cargo area is lockable from inside.
-Removable vent on roof.
-Wide wheel stance for more stability. Less likely to be rolled over.

At night, you can park it in between two vehicles (busses, or vans), or in an alleyway to reduce the sides that zombies can attack. You only have to worry about front, rear and roof.
For refueling, cut a hole in the side of the van and weld on a track so there's a sliding door thing. Park up against an 18-wheeler, bus, diesel pump, etc. Slide open hatch, siphon fuel. You will also have to rig the filler neck to come inside the truck. Or, you can refuel on the go with a handpump and hoses.

Drive slow, unroll the back and have your buddies use the chasers for target practice.

Drawbacks? No radio. The shelving in the back takes up room, but can be folded up. Only two seats (one is a folding jump seat). It's only two-wheel drive.

A gasoline Fedex van will work in a pinch. Gas is more popular.

I wouldn't want to be in a convoy, because what happens if the front or rear car is disabled? Also, you'd have to worry about other people and stuff. Not what I want to be thinking about in the Zom-B-pocalypse.

I'm still new on the rules here. This is a hypothetical situation we're talking about, correct? Well, either way, I wouldn't be STEALING anything. I was talking about abandoned trucks, cars, stores, stuff. If there were owners of the things I need that aren't zombies, I would politely ask for things.

How about this, when you start seeing zombies, BUY a FedEx truck (or similar step van). It will be better for... (clearing throat) "politely asking" for stuff.

So, what if there are no "living" people left in this hypothetical, PAW with zombies? If there are no people to enforce laws, are there still laws? If so, then we are not allowed to mention anything that can break said laws, correct?

So, if I'm driving in this PAW, I still have to stop at red lights (if there's still power), drive on the right side of the road, obey the speed limit, not run over zombies, etc? Zombies are corpses, right? Isn't there laws against messing with or mutilating dead bodies? Also, how would one buy something if there's nobody to buy from? If the people at the supermarket are all walking dead, would I still have to show my "Preferred Card?"

I believe I have the rules down pat, and I will abide by them, but I think it will be kind of hard to exist in a PAW without breaking any laws that are in effect in our civilized world as it stands.

If I sound like a smartass, I'm sorry. I'm trying not to be, seriously. :|

Much like the difference between Looting & Scavanging it is a thin line to be crossed.

Saying your doing it immediately at the PAW SHTF moment would be looting/stealing and all the other law breaking things.
Doing it a month after it all went to hell in a hand basket would be a totally different look on it.

Like Firearms in the UK, while many are illegal as heck there nowadays, in a Zombie PAW I bet none of them turn down that weapon dropped or laying by the Royal Marine body.

Difference falls in the tone of the post, saying I'll take over my local Wal-Mart/Home Depot/Costco immediately is a no no. Saying I'll check the houses in my neighborhood first after being in my shelter for 6 months becomes common sense.
