Welp I've hit a snag... Rivets, I thought I could use nails or screws and break them off, but man it is such a PITA, and they won't deform correctly, so first step is see if any place in town sells em, second step is off line... BAH, just when I felt like working on this thing

But I got a lot done today, so maybe this is a good stopping point.

You can get decent rivets ment for leather at Jo Ann fabrics, or Michael's style stores in 25 and 50 packs for pertty cheap. I've used them for similar projects with good results.

But, more important than that, I have an idea I have an idea! For the filter that is.
Check it out:
Image
the way I see it, you could mount one of those bad boys one of three ways.
One, flat ontop of the helmet. This, imo, would give a really neat, unique futuristic look.
Two, flat on your back, ninja turtle style.
3, cut it to fit the helmet, get a second plate fo the bottom, and use the filter as the comb (or brush. W/e its called) on your helmet! Fricken bad ass!
3.5, cut in half, doubled up, sticking straight out of the back of the suit!
3.6, cut in half mounted on your shoulder, kinda like yo:
Image
(Sorry for the terrible picture, it was all I could find to illistrate my point.) I imagine it being kind of diagonal wraping around your shoulder on your strong arm. Like some armor has to deflect sword chops.

Hmm I kinda like it on the shoulder, as soon as I get the armor to a decent stage I'll go back to the helmet, I need to pick up to elbow pieces I think, that should help with that pipe kinking on me.

I broke down and just ordered a starter kit for rivets off Amazon, got free Prime being a student so be here in a couple days, and I didn't have the anvil piece so works out.

Debating if I want to break down and use leather strips, or 550 cord.

What are you thinking of doing with the elbows? Hard plating, or something softer?

Right now, nothing, this beast is going to be getting heavy soon, but once I get it finished I'll take a better look at it and see what touch ups I need, I honestly haven't really given to much thought beyond the armor and helmet, still need to do boots, arms and the skirt thing.

I like both those ideas! But when you first said "on top of the helmet", maybe because the theme is a Roman soldier, I immediately pictured the filter and case cut to fit the helmet on top, like a horse hair plume. Either way, neat ideas.

I think if I spread my toys all over my gf's kitchen she would ban me for life from it

Nice work on the project so far Sckitzo! I'm anxious to see this all come together.

I finally have something useful to contribute! HAve you thought of mounting a few small filters along the top of the helmet on a "broom" like a roman helmet with the thing on top?

I'm thinking of Marvin the MArtian with filters in place of bristles.

Right now the plan is for a coyote pelt up top, so that prevents placement of filters up top, for the time being at least.

Made a little bit of progress, going to have to use two of the silver rivets though :? I know the shit isn't supposed to match or be pretty but its kinda irks me heh.

Don't have leather, so going to be trying to assemble the rest with 550 cord.

Just noticed, second piece from the left is flipped around wrong way, flags supposed to sit on the chest.

Um you know those rivets are availible locally and I get a discount on them, right? Also the leather scraps I have is waiting for you...

Looks good anyways.

I did not, I don't leave the house much these days unless it's for medical appointments but I'll keep that in mind next time.

So some things I'm noticing, the patterns seems to make it a bit, small. I'm gonna have to scoot the (razor sharp metal) pieces closer to my neck. Taking a break right now then I'll start on the other half of the upper piece.

Here we can see how I'll be using the 550 instead of the leather

I'm really digging the look!

Are you gonna paint the plates though? In an actual PAW type deal, i'd think having uber reflective armor would be bad..

Nah, not gonna paint em, unless I find a matte varnish that will remove the glare maybe?

Use rubber vac line split down the middle to edge the plate close to your neck. Use a belt sander to round the edges.

Vac line? I tired shrink tube and it didn't work if it's similar

Ok, so looks like I am going to have to use leather, the 550 cord allows the plates to shift to much causing a lot of bunch up.

But it's pretty much done, hopefully this week I can work on the lower/chest stomach pieces.

Vac and fuel line are thick rubber tubes. It tends to retain it's shape so it will self clamp on the metal. You might also use those self adhesive door protectors from Autozone or Checkers. Not sure if the door protectors would work on the thin metal nut I am sure the line will.

How would I attach the hose to the metal?

You cut a slot down the middle and it will clamp onto the metal. I am leaving to get some food in a few. If you like I can bring a piece over for you to try.

This looks great now that I see it worn. I like the mish-mash license plate designs and that it is reflective.

But I agree about using the hose around the neck. Just don't slice your hand open cutting it. Not that I know anything about that.....

You could also add a piece of cloth tied around your neck to keep it from rubbing. It seems like wearing this for a while, with sweat and heat, will start to rub and cause hot spots. Roman soldiers wore a piece of cloth to protect their necks from their armor. The Latin word for it is a focale. You could probably get away with just using a towel, or old t-shirt, which you could keep wet to keep yourself cool if you needed to....

It's looking great! Cool to watch your idea take shape.

I actually have a Focale that was given to me by my house when I was still doing SCA stuff, should be perfect.
