Mag 6.2, but shallow too, off the coast. Follows on from yesterday's 6-ish that was deep.

TOKYO -- Japan was struck by a magnitude-8.8 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, triggering a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings along the coast near the epicenter.

In various locations along Japan's coast, TV footage showed severe flooding, with dozens of cars, boats and even buildings being carried along by waters. A large ship swept away by the tsunami rammed directly into a breakwater in Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture, according to footage on public broadcaster NHK.

Officials were trying to assess possible damage from the quake but had no immediate details.

The quake that struck 2:46 p.m. was followed by a series of aftershocks, including a 7.4-magnitude one about 30 minutes later. The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded the strength of the first quake to a magnitude 8.8.

The meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific coast of Japan. National broadcaster NHK was warning those near the coast to get to safer ground.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.S. state of Hawaii.

Just woke up to this. Watching the live footage of the waves coming in now on the BBC, which they are calling 10 metres high, it looks pretty powerful. They've got some fires and are shutting down nuclear power stations too.

Apparently this one was felt in Tokyo very strongly too. Just waiting for the death reports to roll in. BBC link here:
BBC wrote: Tsunami hits north-eastern Japan after massive quake

A massive earthquake has hit the northeast of Japan triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage.

Japan's TV showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away the Fukushima prefecture, after the 8.8 magnitude earthquake.

Officials said a wave as high as 6m (20ft) could strike the coast.

The quake struck about 250 miles (400km) from Tokyo at a depth of 20 miles, shaking building in the capital for several minutes.

The tremor at 1446 local time (0546 GMT) was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks.

There is definitely a warning for Hawaii and the rest of the Pacific, please call friends and family if you can.

It was upgraded again to a 8.9. There have also been numerous large aftershocks, at least one in the 7 range, and another in the high-6 range that took place much closer to Tokyo than the main quake.

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

Onagawa and Fukoshima I & II nuclear power plant (the ones nearest the quake) have shut down automatically, as designed.

Japan has quake preps wired into the blood, so they're as prepared as anyone.

Could be more to come. The earlier 6s and 7s were all part of activity along the same bit of fault line.

Here is the live BBC web coverage.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12307698" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The BBC is usually better at geography than the URL suggests. I think they are just using facilities set up to follow the Middle East uprisings.

Glued to the news in Southern California. My (hardly even completed) BOB is out and I'm getting antsy. I'll be up until the 8-9am watch (hopefully not turning to warning) is over.

My good friend is here, and his sister's in-laws are out there, there is no way to contact them - scary stuff.

Thoughts and prayers to Japan, Hawaii and anyone else that takes the brunt of this.

My Mom's on the Oregon coast right now, and luckily she was still up. I don't know if anything will happen as far as damage goes on this continent, but she's not going to take any chances. She's driving inland now.

The video coming out of Japan is completely devastating. You can tell when the editors cut footage of people being swept away by the waves, and I have never been happier about living on the other side of a mountain range from the sea. It's the fifth largest earthquake in recorded history, and I was listening to a UCLA ( or was it USC? ) scientist talking about the size of the quake when it was rated at 8.8, and he didn't seem to believe that it was possible. Now it's an 8.9.

Crescent City should be reached by 0730. Though we have no way of knowing anything about what the magnitude will be when it hits the west coast, according to NWS, Hawai'i should not experience a tsunami. I don't know if any information includes the multiple aftershocks.
