'Extreme' Solar Storm heading to Earth

Post by Mall Ninja » Wed Sep 10, 2014 5:51 pm

Okay, that is the headline in the paper:

Seattle Times

but they note "The flare is considered extreme on forecasters' scale, but just barely. Flares like this cause geomagnetic storms which can knock some power grids offline temporarily. They also can damage satellites and disrupt radio transmissions. But they expand the colorful northern lights."

So it doesn't sound like a Carrington Event. NASA/NOAA's Space Weather is a little more circumspect:

Active Region 2158, now near center disk, produced a X1 (NOAA Scale R3 - Strong) solar flare today at 10/1745 UTC (Sept 10th 01:45pm EDT ). Impacts to HF radio communications on the daylight side of Earth are expected to last for more than an hour. Initial information suggests that a CME is likely associated with this event, but further analysis is underway at this time.

Anyway, it sounds lie folks should probably be prepared for localized effects and maybe some good northern lights....

Probably will end up being nothing, still be good opportunity to check your inventory and stock up on a few extra essentials...
Water, refresh canned goods and stick the flashlights and radios in a metal box in the basement.
Tinfoil hats optional ;)

The problem I see is their was a weaker flare on the 9th and the 1-2 punch is creating a G-3 level geomagnetic storm. Still nowhere near a 1859 event its something to be wary of for the next few days.

Agreed this will not be a grid killer event. There may be some effects but for the most part I would guess they will be negligible.

There was a grid killer CME a few months ago. However it was not pointed directly at the earth. If it had been a couple of weeks later, given where earth would have been at that time in our orbit, we would have caught it point blank in the face. These coronal mass ejections are highly directional, like a shotgun blast.

So this current event is a good excuse to go around and check things as if this were to be a real CME event. Thanks to the assistance of a young friend, I completed some seasonal maintenance yesterday, rotating some stored fuel and changing oil in my twin Honda generators. Today they are getting a test run before be put back into storage. September is National Preparedness Month and I usually do it anyway this time of year, so this is not something "special" prompted by the X-1.6 class solar eruption, but why not make that your excuse if you haven't already done likewise? Check your pantry, bring vehicle maintenance up to date, check your ammo stock, review your bug-out plan, switch your BOB over to "cool weather" mode.

Will it warm things up? Jesus, I'm sitting in my living room in a hoodie with the hood up, and typing to keep my fingers warm. It's about 41 degrees out, and supposed to drop to 29 degrees. I'll be DAMNED if I'm turning my heat on before October! This is great opportunity to work on my acclimation to the cold.
Come with me if you want to live.

Im using it as an excuse to stock up on a bit more water, (picked up 55 more gallons today) finally get to building a small nested faraday cage (Radios and LED flashlights) as well as a bit of prep organization and the like.

Pray for the best, prepare for the worst. All that sort of thing.

Nah, tomorrow is supposed to be the big day and possibly Sunday. NASA is pointing to a low probability, low impact event and seems remarkably unconcerned. Everything seemed pretty normal over there tonight.

Suppose it's good timing that I happen to be making a previously scheduled visit to COSTCO and REI today.

May or may not be related....

Attended a geocaching event this weekend and everyone seemed to have some instability with thier GPS signals... still go to where we wanted to go but precise locks seemed to be finicky at best. Certainly not enough to cause major issues, but my position was jumping around a good 10 meters most of the time when we stopped to find a cache.
