Needs more EOTech and Surefire light. I sure it's personal preference but the AFG is backwards.

haha.

deliberately did not mention the AFG just to see what reactions I'd get :P

I PM'd regular guy last night about that:
Last night, I wrote:Yea, that's actually the only way the AFG would work for me. The 'right' way and it would put my hand too far below the barrel to feel comfortable/right. The angle of the AFG I think is also too shallow, meaning to close to horizontal. Needs to be about 45d imo, and also hugging the handguard more.

I flipped it around on a whim, just to see, and *BAM* it felt AWESOME. The only problem is that now I have like 5" of useless plastic behind my hand. I shoulda bought a KAC hand stop in the first place, but that's one of those things I woulda only learned through trial and error I guess.

Easier to find than a KAC hand stop:

http://www.skdtac.com/Midwest_Industrie ... id.407.htm

Also cheaper. I would strongly recommend not buying a Gear Sector hand stop, as it won't work right on a handguard with bolt-on rail sections like the MOE (or my VTAC handguard).

Thanks for that tip.

I hadn't looked into KAC-like hand stops yet, so didn't know the alternative. VERY HAPPY to know that there are options aside from that way-over-priced KAC product.

I'm also planning to replace the MOE handguards with a VTAC tube (seems to land right on the price-vs-weight-vs-function compromise that I desire) at some point. It seems to be well reputed, has what I want, is light, is railed, and is free floated... without breaking the bank with some Daniel Defense $300 fucking tube. (at least, I hope it's a fucking-tube for $300)

For now, while I get used to my rifle, and learn to do mag changes and shouldering it and getting a sight picture quickly, as well as basic drills, and just enjoy shooting it, the MOE and AFG will "get the job done" with little negative effects. Maybe I'll keep the MOE and AFG for whenever I build a hunting AR. /shrug.

I couldn't be happier with my VTAC handguard. It's a simple, no-frills design (I've completely dropped VFGs, AFGs and hand stops at this point), which allows a variety of grips for various positions, and rests consistently on almost any surface, from any angle when using objects as improvised rests.

I wanted to keep the A2 front sight, so I run a "JPHG-4M" carbine length tube with the "JPHG-EXT" sight pocket extension, which runs the handguards something like 3" past the front sight post. The carbine length was fine, but the most comfortable grip for me places my hand right at the front sight assembly on a carbine length gas system, so the sight pocket extension was a big improvement.

Image

I know I've probably posted this pic a dozen times, but I am very happy with the way this carbine turned out. Lots of experimentation, and I've got a lot of spare parts sitting around. But it worked out in the end.

Well, I guess the topic of whether or not the ZS forums is or isn't a big Internet Gun Club is now settled.

There's more firearms forums than prepping forums now. :(

Dude, this didn't change shit.

The amount of content was, is, and apparently will always be "ZOMG GUNSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS GUNS GUNS GUNS" and it is a big gun club :P

It's just that now you can sift through the shit, to find an occasional diamond, a little easier now, and it looks like maybe elitism will be easier to combat.

As far as the "Why didn't we also create a Reloading / AK / AR / Glock / 1911 / Gun Pron / CZ-82 / Concealed Carry / Mosin Nagant / NFA / etc" subforum is based on two things- How often we get posts like that and the mission of ZS. We've got one subforum devoted to adding guns to preps and the rest are the big hitters. We aren't a gun forum, we've already got 70 forums as it is. I was against adding anything, because I'm a grouchy old man. Be happy you got something. Not be quiet before I pull this car over and take off my belt.

Hmm, maybe it's time for a break.

That said I'm down to 2,500 topics in the root forum left to be moved. I've about done worn out my mouse fingers. :)

But yeah, we get a lot of similar topics, like I listed above. If we created subforums for 'em all we'd end up a Firearm Forum with 25 sub categories. I don't know that it's our intent to spend that much of our time and DB space on gun topics. There are already some fantastic gun boards out there, I don't think we are trying to become the next ar15.com or glocktalk. So, what we got was a compromise.

Now stop posting in this thread and make your list to participate in the Winter Bugout Contest. There are other forum sections, ya know.

Dude, no offense, but I am so tired of hearing people complain about this. If you don't like it, post interesting topics in the other forums.

When Raptor posts about Katrina, we get dozens of pages and, in my opinion, one hell of a lot of great info. Woods Walker has a BOB thread that by itself features more gear reviews and field tips than some entire forums.

We've got Doc Simon, Jim and Gunny posting some of the best damn first aid posts on teh interwebz, AmirMortal teaching us how to tie knots, and so on and so forth. But because we get a few trolls (and occasional morons) posting stupid topics about firearms just like every other forum on the internet, and because a lot of our members like guns and enjoy discussing them, people have been bitching and moaning about how many firearms topics there are. Just cut it out already.

You can put that frown away. There is still only one Firearms forum. It just has sub-categories now. The point of separating the Firearm section is to make it easier to find info you're looking for, not to give it more emphasis.

Eventually, most if not all of the forum sections will also be sub-categories out. Firearms just happens to be the biggest one so it's where we decided to start.
