The ZS Forums new role, the Arbiter

Post by PistolPete » Sun Aug 09, 2009 9:18 pm

In an attempt to continue to improve the quality of the information found on the forums, we have decided to implement a new role. The name of this role is Arbiter. A definition of Arbiter from Websters is:
a person or agency whose judgment or opinion is considered authoritative
Arbiters will be assigned to a specific forum or three. Their duties overlap some with the role of Moderator, but they will have additional responsibilities as well. Think of the forums as a college campus. While the Moderators play the role of campus security, the Arbiters are the professors. The professor is responsible for maintaining order in their class, but hand off larger problems to the security guards. The security guards have the ability to enforce rules in any classroom, but aren't necessarily well schooled in what is going on in that classroom. We will be trying to select Arbiters that have shown they are good citizens here and have posted intelligently on a subject or variety of subjects.

The Moderators spend most our their time chasing the problem children, and have little time left to help organize individual forum sections. We hope bringing Arbiters on board will allow the information on the forums to be better organized, and help us catch problems quicker.

This is going to be a slow rollout. I am discussing with several well-regarded forum members taking on the role of Arbiter, and as we get people up to speed we will continue to bring more on board. The first Arbiters will be announced in the next week or so. By this time next year, we should have an Arbiter assigned to many of the forum sections.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Arbiter - sounds like it could be a really thankless job. Anyone who WANTS the duty should be automatically disqualified on emotional stability grounds, kind of the ZS version of Catch-22.

That said, if they spend time re-routing threads into more appropriate forums, that would probably help people use the search function more accurately. So this certainly could be beneficial to all concerned.

Now that the warp field's stabilized, the Arbiter's role is to swoop into threads cloaking a bunch of fully loaded carriers.

You know, for some reason I don't see this Arbiter thing ending well. Seems like a lot of potential for a "The Arbiter has spoken!" syndrome, and people hesitating or refraining from posting in arbitrated forums for fear of getting a schooling or a smackdown. I theorize that such a condition left unchecked would eventually have the effect of causing communication in those forums to drop off or die altogether.

We'll see, I suppose. It will all depend on how this system is actually implemented. But if the attempt is to take a campfire discussion and turn it into a college lecture hall, my guess is that you're not going to like the end results.

My $0.02 worth on the issue. Not that it matters, sounds like the wheels are already in motion.

That's what I'd be worried about.

Pete, maybe you could give us some more clarification without the classroom analogy?

What I originally read -- and what I'm hoping -- is that while moderators are moderators of the entire forum, the arbiters will be moderators of the individual forums.

And I think we'd be better off with and adjudicator instead of an arbiter:

The point of the new volunteer gig is to encourage relevant conversation in their respective forum area. An "Arbiter" will not last long if they fail to uphold their end of the bargain.

I gather that the idea is that this person will have Mod powers in their given area, but their job will mainly be to answer questions and encourage discussion in the areas where they have experience. For example, just to pull names out of the air, DavePAL in Firearms, Woods Walker or Mags in Bug Out Gear, or Citizen Simon in First Aid. They would have the means to keep things in their "classrooms" orderly, but their main job would be to interject informed opinion and facts where needed.
