Hand-to-hand combat with a zombie (or similar virus)...

Is suicide, I've read commenters saying they would grab the nearest machete, katana (c'mon), chainsaw and smash away at zombies, that's a sure fire way of getting the infection or becoming food.

Yes you might have to engage in hand to hand but you should try to get him as far away from you as possible so you can run off if you can, use pushes, shove them out of your way etc.. Not go maniac with a crowbar, you may take one down but you could get infected ( even with gear ).

The last thing you want is to have to grapple one, they could be stronger then the average man and could make you into zed chow,
