I quit smoking, drinking, and drugs (never did that much, but still) on the same day, 8 years ago. Best decision I ever made.

I'm 5'5' and 186#. I'm not in the best shape of my life and I know I've got a whole lot of work to do. I'm a distance runner not a weight lifter. I can run for 3 hours and be ok but I can't throw a punch worth crap. As for the original question, melee is out, running is my plan...

a few years I broke my spine.. I used to be a paramedic and it happened when lifting a 400lb lady on a stretcher over my head .
I used to run 3 miles every other day.
NOW 80lbs heavier and 2 surgeries later I still have pain so to say the least I have not been able to work out.

I have excepted the fact of accumilating as much ammo as possible to avoid the whole running thing.

I ALSO have packed a bottle of Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce in my BOBag
to spread on my butt so I would be tastier to the zombies :D

Re: Are you fit enough?

Postby TheLastOne » Fri Nov 25, 2011 11:44 pm

turned 35 this month and in the best shape of my life. Started a year ago at the gym doing crossfit etc (no social gym bullshit, all work all the time). Lost 3 belt notches, gained some lean and mean. I feel good. I go most weeknights if work allows, between 6-9 hours a week.

I do fight training, I know exactly how hard it is to fight multiple attackers (try 5) in a training situation. I can imagine how even more turned up that would be in real life. I watch those crowds of people protesting in Egypt. Politics aside, I can't imagine wtf a person would do if they needed to get out of the middle of that. Especially with all 5k people simultaneously wanting to get out right now.

My cardio is pretty good. What I'm impressed with is my recovery time after workout. I do an hour crossfit nightmare; I'll be busting it out and be able to get into another class 5 minutes after I'm done.

My strength isn't that great. Example, fran workout is 21-15-9 reps of thrusters and pullups. I can't do the recommended 90#s for the thrusters YET. I can do 75. I can do all the pullups though. High five. I'm not under ten minutes for that one yet either, but getting close.

Summary: cardio good, strength needs improvement. I don't need to lift volkswagons and I prefer speed over strength (cross fit is superb for maintaining speed while gaining strength. If you are curious, look up some youtubes of crossfit. Little ladies will blow your damn mind. I SAID MIND! heehee). I have my 'bob' down to 30#s including 4L water. I can maintain a semblance of speed (as in get my ass over a curb, I dunno what the fudge some of youz are talking about carrying 50# plus for any length of time over any kind of incline...) with 30# and still have most of my necessities.

For some of you above posters:
A. Don't ever think you can't do it etc/ get started. My little problem is I am damn near social disorder: I get panic attacks, claustrophobic, and have a hell of a time with crowds. Standing in line at a grocery store is a nightmare. Not uncommon for me to set my basket down and bail. For me to get out of the house and go sign up for this stuff was a pretty huge friggin deal. Don't let whatever YOUR little problem is stop you from trying, be it weight, age, shape, previous experience, whatever. It was love at first sight for me when I got involved, but it was very hard for me to get out and do it. I'm pushing you to get out and do it too. Your joints all fucked? Go do some water aerobics and hit on old ladies.

2. Do something. Anything. Get off the fucking computer and go walk around the neighborhood. Consider it recon for when the shtf or whatever. Make it fun. Download your fav podcasts for one of your ears (leave one ear open so you don't get run over or mugged). Load up your urban bob and come back and dump out half of that crap while feeling silly for blowing money on crap you won't be able to carry. I did :P A lot of you have kids. Take them too. Set a good example, get them into fitness early. You know you should. Some people are mobility challenged, but there is always something someone can do to improve their fitness I think.

Q. cancel your cable. Do it. Best thing I ever did. I had imaginary commitments to watch tv shows that frankly suck. I hate commercials anyway. I catch my 3 or 4 favs on hulu/internet. Now I go to the gym and interact with new people most evenings. More rewarding imo. Gym costs what my cable did. Good trade.

%. I quit smoking april 2010. 15 years of a pack a day at least. Your cigarette cessation did not make you gain weight. Your eating more because stuff actually started tasting good, your boredom and your need to fill that space that the habit left did make you gain weight. Your metabolism didn't cease to exist. This is meant as some tough love and not as a personal attack. I'm not wanting to start a derail here, I hope no one is offended. You have to take responsibility for what is happening in your life. You are in more direct control of your own existence than you'd probably like to know. Be aware of your decisions and how they affect you. You decide to eat what you eat. You decide to sit on your butt or you decide to get up and go.

And that's a whole lot more than I meant to write, but there it is.
To directly answer the op, I'm in better condition to bail in a moments notice if I feel the zombies coming around the corner than I have ever been, and I ain't going back. Fitness is a prep. Store food and water. Learn to shoot, hunt, and grow stuff. Learn to run, jump, pull, push, punch, kick, climb, swim, and fall.

Decided to quit couch surfing after work and take my teen to the rec center for that 2 hours usually spent watching tv. All the rush of working out with free weights again is still flowing 2 days later.

I beleive being "fit" is a state of mind. Are you fit enough to fight for your life, to not give up and bleed to death? I have never been in a fight for my life, although it is always a possibility in my line of work, but there are several accounts of even the most fit people not being able to manage the adrenaline dump and getting beat to death. I think the key is to do something! Walk, run, lift, MMA train, hell, use the fucking Shake Weight! At least you'll be able to pleasure yourself faster on those lonely Friday/Saturday nights.

Heart disease runs in both sides of my family, so I know what I have to watch for. I run on a treadmill to ease the wear and tear on the body, and I try to lift 3X/week. The key again is to do something!

Somethign to add here. MARSOC, Force Recon, and a number of the other high-speed low-drag guys are not big, muscular dudes. Most of the actually MARSOC operators I know (the guys that show up with an HK 416 or a MK 17 on the rifle range with a 2 months beard and wearing flannel) are scrawny ass motherfuckers. I don't think I've met one who was still deploying, and weighed more than 200lb.

That's my goes, someday, is wiry strength. I work out with high-reps, and push up the weight when I can. I need to run more.

I am taking a swimming class for my phys ed credit this semester. I have discovered that this 37 year old man is in better shape than an entire pool full of 17-25 year olds. I'm about on par with the teacher and one other old dude.
All three of us are Army vets. :)
