Are you fit enough?

Postby evolved001 » Fri Oct 28, 2011 7:57 pm

When the shiz hits the fan, your ammo and suppies are running low. Zombies are moving into your position. Its melee time or grabing your gear and running.
My question is. Is your fitness level and melee skills up for a long fight or long move with all your gear at a moments notice? What your thoughts?

I'm out of shape and could stand to work out more. Thats my thoughts.

Even if I could run marathons, my thoughts would remain the same.

My back hurts, my ankles get stiff when I sleep, I just had surgery to remove a chip of bone in my elbow, my eyesight is gradually fuzzing out, my high range of hearing is shot, and sometimes my ass bleeds when I poop.
And I'd be willing to take on anybody in my weight class. :)

Uhm... countin' bullets here. I'd fail rule #1 in Zombieland.

Then again... if I could survive the first wave, I'd last longer than the galoots at the gym.

Being fit enough is like being rich enough: no such thing

I'm in a pretty constant state of trying to become fitter, with the main issue being the parameters of fitness the event I am training for calls for. I can be a pretty cardio lacking slob when I'm getting ready for a powerlifting meet, but I'm all about the endurance when I decide to do a grappling tournament. In between contests I tend to go for a generalist approach that is all about the love of the iron with some strongman style speed, carry and throw work.

Guess it all comes down to how you want to define "fit".

I'm pushing 40, my knees are fair and as long as I dont have to run long distances I am fine. I could lose a few pounds as well. That being said, I throw a baseball around 200 times minimum a week with 75-100 of those being pitches. I also swing a bat about 200 times a week, so I am good if I get caught on a baseball field. The trick to stamina with a bat is 37 " of Japanese Ash called a SSK Fungo. It only weighs 18 oz, so even old man muscles don't get tired. :D

I'm out of shape. I sure would like an 8-pack, but I can sprint for 1/4 of a mile without stopping, and I can walk all day with a 50 lb pack with a 5-10 minute break every 3 hours.

exercise isn't my problem, but eating right, which is what I've been focused on for the last month or so.

Defining fit! When it comes to fighting multiple zombies or even multiple thieves trying to take your supplies. I say muscular and cardio Endurance is going to be the staple. This means you need to not just work on (Raw strength) but (Endurance Strength). Also have the cardio endurance to fight or move for very long periods of time. I am talking about this being a Melee situation for if you have no firearms or run out of ammo. Remember having the the Muscular & Cardio Endurance is just part of it you will want to know how to fight with melee weapons from Swords to Sticks or anything you can find.

I can jog 5-7 miles with 30-40 lbs of gear , do 75-100 push ups at intervals, can do a bunch of runs up and down flights of stairs. I can work all day doing yard work. No, I'm not fit enough to fight hordes of anything.
My biggest problems are weight, my back.and joints. What can I say, I'm getting old.

Never really. I keep trying to cross-train, use a variety of weapons, and am always working on my gear/bob/loadout. I need to start running with my load, but I worry about what my neighbors might think when they see me jogging with weapons.

I imagine that most normal folks, non-military, non-martial arts, or LEO's, have no real idea of exertion battle is, and the training it takes to do it well.
It's going to take lots of different skills and being in shape is going to be one of them. Maybe a few will hunker down, have lots of ammo and supplies, and do okay. Many many more will be on the run, cars will fail, and those folks that can run and fight with their personal gear will do better at staying alive.

I recently had to do a 1.5 mile run in under 11 minutes. I did it, but I came in at 10:47 so it was close :(. I need some work. I will be in the woods all weekend building a base camp. Spider shelters, fire pits, hauling water. A good five miles to get there with 30 lbs of gear. Just what the Dr ordered I think!

Am I fit enough? Eh... not really. Do I think id be ok if shtf? Yup.

I carry some extra weight (5'8", 185) but I can also walk 3 1/4 miles in an hour carrying a 80lb load. I do that three times a week. I can deadlift 325, and strict military press 135 for 5 reps.

Not bad for a few months shy of my 49th birthday.

Also, see the quote in my sig.

100 pounds overweight, so no, not even close to fit enough.

I'd love to be as out of shape as you are. Like most others have said, I'm nowhere close to as fit as I'd like to be.

Age adjusted US Army PT standards.

You ought to be able to do the minimums for your age group.
