Pretty much.

They eventually ditched the bear rifle because they never had a good use for it. The .410 was what was putting meat in the pot, time and again. Ducks, squirrels, and ptarmigan.
On the other hand, they never got into a fight with bad guys shooting at 'em.
So to some extent I'd say it depends on how you envision the situation. More like Chris McCandless? I'd go shotgun. More like Hotel Rwanda? I'd go AR.
(I'm referring to what I'd CARRY, since I own both, assuming I didn't have a vehicle and so couldn't just bring 'em all.)

Solution: carry a shotgun, but tie a Kel-Tec PLR-16 onto it with blue wire. Or carry an AR with a Taurus Judge tied onto it
Being serious, I would carry both a Marlin Golden 39A and an AR. I could put together the 39A after setting up camp (or at least setting down my ruck to hunt), but would have the AR on deck to deal with any larger prey or predators.

Blast a hole through their ranks and run through it before the gap closes, then fire shots behind you at hip-level as you run to hamper pursuit. Need to run through an area that has many scattered zombies? Pick the least zombie-infested path, start sprinting, and just blast any zombie that gets too close. You don't need to try and kill the zombies, just get em down long enough for you to boot it outta there. It's very difficult to get accurate shots with a rifle while running. You don't have time to stop or slow down enough to aim for a headshot. With a shotgun, you just have to barely aim for a body shot, and you can do it acurately enough while still maintaining a speed that is faster than the undead. Shotguns and running-and-gunning were made for each other.
There are many different advantages with the AR too, but ultimately I'd take a shotgun.
