How far can you throw that stick and do crippling or lethal damage?
50 yards is not an unreasonable distance for a .410 firing slugs, 000, or even .45 LC rounds.
How many sticks you got?
I can carry a helluva a lot more rounds for the shotgun than I can carry stout sticks.
Shotgun = win

1) shoot .410 rounds at threat until threat is stopped,or you are out of rounds
2) whack the peejeebus out of threat with buttstock (aka "the stout stick part of my shotgun") if it gets close enough
3) teabag dispatched threat and his laughable Klingon battle axee
