Zombie Stomping Phalanx Gear

Postby crebralfix » Fri Jun 08, 2007 9:45 pm

I have seen several threads recently, including the 300 thread. I thought I'd post some of my ideas, with links.

Another armor idea beyond hardened leather or chainmail, is to reinforce the leather with metal. Steel washers can be riveted onto the leather (I have seen this done). You could even just do a motorcycle suit or biker leathers.

In terms of zombie armor, avoiding infection requires covering all exposed skin, the eyes, and any orifices. This could be accomplished with a riot helmet and some sort of chain or leather neck piece. Gauntlets and a face shield are essential. Also, greaves and very heavy boots would be very useful. You may consider using a shield.

As for weapons, I'd go with an AK-47 in 7.62x39mm, several pistols that take the same magazines, a sword, two large knives, and at least one large folder.

Consider the above sword (see the link for the review and videos of him abusing it). It's short enough to be used one handed and powerful enough to cleave through limbs and skulls. Furthermore, it is very durable and should resist damage through use. The point can go through the occular window.

I'd put one handgun on my hip, one on my shield, and one in my rifle bug out bag's holster. Keep your rifle BOB open so you can drop your empty magazines and handguns into it. It also has space for a water bottle or medical kit.

Alternatively, skip the sword and get a tomahawk. This particular model includes a point for those skull smashing shots!

Spears are useful and give you some reach. I'd go with the boar spear to prevent a zombie from pulling itself up the shaft. You don't always have to go for the kill; slow 'em down with a leg shot and take it out when you have time. Halberds are particularly good at this, but require two hands. Maybe one halberder and one swordsman would make a good combination.

For those of you who are out of shape...I guess you're screwed. Of course, you could always get off your arse! Learn some pankration. Take a course on gunfighting.

Also, workout in your gear. In my (real life) case, I train with two folding knives, one pistol, and two spare magazines. Initially, the workouts are a bit more difficult, but the body adapts to the weight and chafing. A good kydex holster resists sweat, keeps it off your gun, and minimizes chafing. You'll need to carry the pistol on your strong side because many of the exercises require squatting, so appendix or crossdraw carry may be uncomfortable. Actually, with appendix carry, you'll squish your nads.

Here's an example of appendix carry:

Carrying centerline like that makes it easier to access your weapon in a FUT (Fucked Up Tangle) or while manuvering off the line of an attack. It also makes weapons retention a bit easier and doesn't twist your shoulders offline disrupting your blaance and pulling at least one hand away from your centerline where it can't get in the way of an incoming attack.

All that said I still carry a little behind my hip at about 7:30 (lefty) because I find appendix carry uncomfortable with my weapon and body type.

As for the rest of it see my sigline. There are much better ways to fight off a horde of zombies then with a Phalanx unless said Phalanx is of the 20mm CIWS variety.

Yes a Spartan hoplite trained for battle since he could walk, backed by 299 other Spartans, and lead by a military genius can hold off any number of zombies armed with spear, shield, and sword. However your couch-potato, asthmatic, gets in a car to drive to the corner store lazy ass can't. Deal with it.

Unless he's got Situs Inversus that ain't appendix carry. He's a lefty.

Sorry, I had nothing more constructive to add and yet I still wanted SO DESPERATELY to participate.

Personal opinion on weapon placement on the body.

One under the shoulder harness, and one cross draw from the strong side.

Just my $0.02.
