Camp San Luis Obispo, 500 yards, M14 qualification, back in the 1970's. Out to 500 meters at Fort Ord with the M16A1, ditto. I wish we had some open terrain up here and you didn't have to go all the way to Central Oregon to shoot that distance. But it does sound fun. 8)

No, I actually was a kid at the time, Army Jr. ROTC cadet when I fired M14's. Imagine having an armory that included not only full auto but crew served weapons at a public school today with zero tolerance and gun free zones. We had a firing range, 50' for .22LR target rifles but when we fired our 81mm mortar we used a 60mm subcaliber device and did it on the baseball field. Ah, the good old days.

Lets see, longest shot I've ever taken period? It was about 1100 yards away. Did I hit it? Fuck no.

Longest shot I've ever taken and ACTUALLY hit my target was about 750 yards away.

Mostly though I'm comfortable around the 250-300 yard range and then after that it just depends on a number of factors :

  • If I'm really practiced on that particular rifle.
  • That particular load.
  • What platform am I shooting off of? (bench rest-pick up truck bed-prone-kneeling-offhand etc etc)
  • If the target is moving a little or not.
  • The wind.
  • The time of day and available light.
  • If I have decent optics where I can actually see the target (if I can see the damn thing...I can usually hit it).

The more those things are in my favor the better chance I have of hitting it.

430 some yards on a Wood Chuck with my BDL in 223.
And let me tell you, that is really stretching that rifle/scope combo.

Longest shot into nothing: I am guessing 6000+ yards off the deck of the USS Saipan with a MK-38. I was 13 on a Tiger cruiser,
I got to shoot 25 rounds into the Atlantic.

Toughest shot to bag game: 296 yard with a 30-06 to take down a mid size 6 pointer coming at me at a full lope with the dogs right behind him. Resting on a fence post. I had to time his gait to hit him on the landing.

Well the longest shot I ever made was a bit over 300yds on a groundhog W/my 7mm-08.

I was had time to recover from the recoil & see the mist when the bullet hit.

My best long range shot was on a red squirrel @ about 250 yds. Made a neck shot on that sucker W/my 280 Rem. There was n't even much tissue damage as the polymer tipped bullet just zipped through W/O expanding.

Ah Commanders engagement table 8 from a moving BFV @ about 5mph, 2800 meters. 3 hits dead center of a "bmp". Maybe 250 to 300 with my Savge .308 filling my doe tag.

I have a reputation amongst my hunting group of regularly taking deer at well under 100m, my last buck was at about 15m in dense bush, rattled in by my dad. Longest range I've taken a deer at was 300m with open sights.
I went out to a friend's farm a couple weeks ago to do my first real target shooting. I hit a 12" steel plate at 600m with the original peep sights on a Long Branch Lee-Enfield we tried for the first time that day. My brother hit it too.
I think we actually found it easier to adjust to the range with iron sights than with a scope, though once the other guys got dialed in with a scope, they could hit pretty consistently.

M16A2, E type Target, 600M, Iron sights.

This was the bet. I had to do it in three rounds from the prone supported. The wager, 4 racks of German Beer, winners choice.
Did it in two.

Platoon SGT said, I could have a three day pass if I could make the last round count. Miss and I was on Staff Duty Driver that weekend. 4 racks of Beer and a long weekend made for a happy Private.

Motivation is a wonderful thing.

Scored a first round hit with an LSW at 800 once, I was surprised, the other guys were shocked as well.

It does look like this though and it fires from the closed bolt, they were crap as a SAW, not bad for hitting individual targets.

Some of us hit and some didn't, at that distance hitting a target that small is just getting lucky. It was around 60 degrees and no wind that day.

You can actually see dog tags at 1000 yards, and hit them? Wow, I suck.

No you can't see the tag at 1000 yards in your scope, it is placed center mass on a target and you are allowed ten rounds to attempt a hit. You take your time, adjust for wind if there is any, and do your best to hit center. Even the spotter with his high power spotting scope cannot confirm a hit on a target that small at this range. He can say, "I think that one was close." LOL...This occurs after DM qualification, the Marines that graduate get a chance to take this shot. Sort of a DM celebration of sorts. If you do hit, it is sheer luck and the target with the dog tag gets framed and signed by the instructor. I wasn't one of the lucky ones to hit, shame that. That was a nice souvenir for the people that were lucky enough to hit.. well until they have to use an entire paragraph to explain it to some DICK on the intranets.

200 yards with my Tikka T3 in 30.06...where I live, I had to work hard to find 200 yards of open space...most shots around here for game are under 75 yards...

The three hundred meter shots with M-16s and M-4s in the Army. These days all I have access to is a two hundred yard range. It's not even really a challenge with an ACOG from prone.

Of course, I'm not enough of a badass to successfully engage offhand at this range.

My longest with a scoped rifle was 278 yards. I was shooting from a tree stand that ran along the edge of a field. I was using a old 30-06 that belongs to my father with a fixed power Weaver Scope.

Iron sights was with my Marlin 30-30 at about 95 yards. Pretty much the same set up as above, but I waited for the buck to get a little closer befor I took the shot.

Here in the AL, we have some 200 and 150 yard ranges, and if I want to shoot out a little furhter I have to go out to a private shooting range.

I am hopeing on getting a Savage 10FP in either .223 or .308 to work on some long range shooting for coyotee intridiction activities and target shooting.

1000 metres with a Parker Hale 7.62 rifle. Also used to do competitive shooting out to the same range using 7.62 iron sighted target rifles at O.R.A. competitions.

~100ft with a .177 air pistol and hit a blackbird center mass, it went down into the water  Lucky ass shot, I was only able to do it once, it was sitting on a tree branch. The sights on that pistol really sucked, they were similar to the old low profile GI 1911 sights, if you guys know what I'm talking about.

Other than that, mainly ~75ft is the max range at our two indoor ranges, and I can do center mass and headshots with pretty much anything. I'm hoping to take a rifle course at the Mt. Morris Blackwater/US Training center in a year or two, they have some nice big ranges. Northern Illinois doesnt really have squat in terms of long ranges, but I dont have anything other than a unscoped .22LR in terms of rifles. I'm going to start putting a few bucks away every few weeks next year or so for a Novske :D

I've done the 500m with M4s, 600m with M240B, and I was making nice groups at about 650m with my M107. That's about all the space we had. I'm sure the 107 could reach out much farther.
