Possible Answer to Famine of 536AD

It has long been debated the cause of the haze that eliminated crops and caused a famine in 536AD. A volcano was the leading contender and some scientists think they have located it. ... 18-a-break

When looking at samples dated to the spring of 536, the team found two microscopic shards of volcanic glass, which were later traced to volcanic rocks from Iceland. According to the researchers, these well-traveled shards are evidence of a massive volcanic eruption that spewed a monstrous plume of ash into the air over the Northern Hemisphere, riding the winds south to Europe and engulfing the sky for more than a year.
By all accounts it was much worse than 1816, the year without a summer. It was then followed by a major plague outbreak that made the Dark Ages very dark indeed.

One year of food stores... you and the family.

One year would have still left you starving or dead. The article states 18 months of darkness, Add to that the time ( depending on time of year it ended Could be late fall) to resume crop/livestock production. Pretty scary

Maybe, not everyone starved clearly. If you are still trying to get food like everyone else that year will provide the cushion you need to survive.

If these are 1 in 1000 year events hopefully we will never see one in our life times. But if we do, given the current state of the world the death toll would be no less than apocalyptic.
