2012 Autum MBO Chatter/Planning Thread

Post by Medic73 » Mon Sep 03, 2012 9:21 pm

In 2011, the AMBO (Autum Mock Bug Out) Contest Dates were Friday, 23 September until Monday, 31 October according to the thread I found.

Does that mean that the 2012 AMBO will be somewhere around Friday, 21 September through Wednesday, 31 October?

I know we just finished the 2012 Spring/Summer MBO Contest and that was a blast. I'm already thinking about the next MBO and because I will probably have some other ZSers with me, I'd like to try and start some date planning for the trip(s).

I'm a camping fool and fall is one of my absolute favorite times to camp. I already have a couple of ideas for the next MBO Contest, so any advance hints on the possible/probable dates would be appreciated.

TIA for any answers.

Edited to change the Subject to 2012 Autum MBO Chatter/Planning Thread

Re: Question about the 2012 AMBO Dates

We could turn this thread into the chatter/planning thread. I'm obliged to judge it. Thing is I got a wedding in less than a month so I will ask the other SMBO'12 winners to chime in regarding judging and setting up of the rules, also accepting applications for any others wishing to judge, offer prizes, organize, etc. I'm down with whatever is come up with though and will volunteer to judge.

ETA: What I am saying is I cannot head anything up right now but will gladly volunteer to work it with a prize and judging.

I'm in the same boat as Ninja...classes just started and as an officer in our student vet's club I'm balls deep in organizational planning, parades, tailgating, etc, oh...and I just started a job :gonk:

Needless to say, my brain would explode if I had to organize anything new right now.

Count me in as a judge and a prize offering, though

Count me in for Prize and Judging as well. Unfortunately, I'm eyeball deep in "life happens" at the moment as well as helping try to get ZS:Southeastern VA set up and official-like and can't responsibly take on another organizational task.

I am in for a prize. To first place a 2 Hawks Pathfinder Logo Hawk with an extra hickory handle, sheath, and two different types of belt hangers.

Oh goody, my summer plans failed to leave enough time for the MBO (taking the kids camping) that I had originally planned. But my kids won't let me cancel another camping trip. Late October or mid November is on the mental planner.

It'll be my first. I have 2 weeks off mid-November!

I'm down. Just set up the rules/theme. I'm not picky and this'll be my first MBO so I'm gonna be a quiet participant to see how it goes before I go offering input.

I prefer the old standby: death results in disqualification

Pack as much or as little as you want. Stay out for at least 1 night.

Suggested start and stop dates?

BTW: I'm leaning towards a Laplander saw prize :D

Out of pure selfishness I am asking for an end date no earlier than November 18th since that is when my vacation ends and I have one of those jobs where I have to bid for vacation time the year prior.

I was actually going to take my son on this MBO and see what we can learn together. I thought if there was some kind of theme, it'd be cool, but I can always set my own. :)

Wouldn't mind if we went through Thanksgiving week. I have a trip in October planned and one the week of Thanksgiving.
I'd love to see a "Best Family Bugout" winner.

How about last day of November as an end date? We can start it Saturday September 22 - the first day of Fall. Shoot, first day of winter is December 21, 2012 so we could end it December 20th??

I don't want to take away from a possible Winter MBO though, but we might want to take a break too?

How about a winter bug-in?

(Of course, finding a way to do that when I have 4 others in the same house may be difficult. Maybe shop or garage for those situations...)

Well my friends and i have had a mock bug out planned for months. We leave Sept 21 so if it starts near then it would work perfect...

one thing for sure though...even though im a tent guy, and love my eureka backcountry 1...im going to try a simple lean to or maye by a hammock to try and lighten my load...

bugs are general dormant during fall right?

I'm taking a break from doing anything more than competing and answering questions from organizers.

Spittballin' here, but...

Contest dates Sept. 21 - Dec. 4. This allows for a few weeks to put stuff together and and extra weekend on the backside to squeeze in more trips with time to post.

Break--then consider a WMBO (I'm thinking starting Dec. 21)

Aside from the normal Top 3 winners, I really like the idea of best Family Bug Out as the bonus theme for a 4th category.

I think seasonal bugouts sounds cool. It'll give people a chance to get out in the different weather environments and see the challenges and benefits each exhibit.

I'm eager to do this one.

Whoever ends up organizing, send me a PM when the official thread gets posted (it's linked to my email) and I'll return to my entry-recording duties asap.

I vote for getting started whenever the next main organizer feels comfortable, because this time around--if we follow the "post your MBO entry as a thread in the Bug Out Gear subforum"--people will just start flooding the gear subforum with awesome adventures and gear reviews, and I support facilitating that as much as possible.

I am down with whatever the group wants. During the margins of the seasons people sometimes underestimate nature and find themselves in trouble. In some places any weather is possible. Last Fall we had a tropical storm and a heavy wet snow storm both taking out power for 8 days each. I was forced cut a trip short during the last Fall contest. Anyone entering shouldn't take the season for granted.
