EDC bag made in USA?

Postby cbr900 » Thu Jul 19, 2012 8:39 pm

Are there any companies out there that make 100% USA made bags that would be good for a small EDC?

I have been using this RedRock sling pack I bought for $18 and it finally started falling apart on me after about 6 months

Real US military surplus bags are made in the USA. Also this company:

http://topodesigns.com/

But I don't know a thing about them.

It would be nice to get some with a lower energy cost. This foreign crap uses a ton of energy unnecessarily to save a few bucks on labor.

Kifaru, Mystery Ranch, McHale, all made in the USA and each offer small "EDC" size bags.

I've been using Hill People Gear's 'Kit Bag' as an EDC. It's a chest pack and rides in my car and at work with me...so I'm never far from it. Check it out, it's good stuff. They make multiple versions of it, from minimalist to robust, to customizable. If you check out my posts you can find a review and pics of mine. I would feel secure if I had to make it home from work or school with it. Well, as comfortable as can be in a survival situation, I suppose :P

They also make the Tarahumara, a ~750ci pack for day hiking. I want one...

They're not 100% USA made...some of their raw material I believe is outsourced, but by and large it's domestic production, and it's a pretty cool small company.

Many "made in the USA" products are made by prisoners in prison factories. So, I would rather have something made by honest Chinese laborers in sweatshops than something made by victims of America Justice System/The Prison Industrial Complex.

I've been using a Tom Bihn shoulder bag for about three years. No noticeable wear on the bag.

Sent via messenger owl.

I do pretty good with Timbuk2 bag - mine is "custom" (made to order) so manufactured in San Francisco. Their already made bags are made in India/China/Viet Nam. I keep my holstered pistol in it just fine with no mods. 'Aint going to be no quick draw but it's there.

There a lot of local custom messenger bag companies in the US - Black Star (Portland) is one that comes to mind. Not sure if they'd be up to do one wiht something specifically for a gun but you could always email them and ask.

I can send you many nice citations discussing the 4,000,000 man prisoner labor force in use in China today. Most of whom work in dangerous jobs like mining or ore refinement with minimum safety standards (or none).

Lots of good bags made in the USA. Not lots of cheap bags made in the USA. You might have to make a decision about which is more important. No judgment here, just noted that your first bag was $18, so I'm assuming you're on a budget. It has been my brief experience that you will rarely regret stretching the budget the first time.

I just posted that ZS was not the place to have such discussions and you go ahead and try to continue one!

Do you also speed past cops?

not really on a budget just tired of spending money on junk, I gave maxpedition a try and was by no means impressed. Now that being said there is no way ill every spend $150 on any bag no matter how cool it is after all its just a bag to carry your stuff in.

Why weren't you impressed with Maxpedition? Im just curious. I have a falcon and its one of the best bags I've ever had. I also have a Northface Hot Shot that I use quite offten. When i was in college I used to have to walk through some crappy weather to get to class and the northface kept all of my stuff dry. It was about $110-120. And to be honest, I have no idea if Northface makes their stuff in the US. I would say make peace with spending $100 bucks or so on a bag. You get what you pay for and usually itll last you forever.

Not trying to bash maxpedition as i know there are some true die hard fans I had a Sitka when they first came out the stitching was very poor in several places and very uneven, The velcro piece in the back tore off after about 4 months of holding my 1911 officer model. I had one of those shoulder bags and padding on the back wore through after 6-7 months of use.

Your personal view of a product will vary greatly over another's, a kid might use the bag as a school bag and claim it last forever im a little harder on my gear than that so it doesnt last as long. Im just saying for all the hype I wasnt impressed in the least bit by maxpedition.
