Ultimate BOB ultralight shelter?

Postby GOODdaysir » Mon Jul 02, 2012 6:56 pm

Hey ZS, I just went on my summer MBOB, and while out I realized one thing, My AMK heatsheets bivvy wasnt going to be enough shelter, so when I got back I started looking online, but couldnt find something that I thought would work. So now I ask you guys: is there a BOB shelter that
A) Is rainproof
B) Is mosquito proof
C) packs down amazingly small
D) is cheap (Under $100~)

The terms amazingly small and cheap are mutually exclusive....

the best I can think of that fits all those req's is an equinox terrapin ultralight poncho (7 oz) + mantis bugnet (4.5 oz)...

Hammock set ups can be done for under $100

My two person hammock was $65, I know the same make for one person is around $40-45.
Bug netting (works for either model) was around $50
Tarp, anything from a painters drop cloth at the dollar store to a siltarp, $1-80
Straps with varying prices for length, style, location, $10-40

Minimum ($40+$50+$1+$10 =) $101

The challenge comes when you want to add under and over quilts for colder weather, you're looking at as much pack space as a quality tent, and comparable prices too.

I run my hammock set up for warm weather, and purchased a 4 season tent for my winter trips.

P.S. There is a thread on this already, with lots of really cool options that fit most of your requirements (price flexibility is important), but I'm too lazy to search for you.

The Eureka! Solitaire is light, cheap, waterproof, mosquito proof, and packs down small. Look on Amazon and you can get one brand new for about $70. I've got one, and love it. It's not very big, but it gets the job done, and you can't have everything, especially when the main concern is cost.

I was misremembering, cheap wasn't necessarily one of his criteria, but there were cheap options in that thread. Though, I was quite impressed with the nemo, and may consider one if I ever find myself with some extra money and a real want for a bivy type shelter.

Snugpak Ionosphere.

Not under $100. I found mine on Amazon for $150. It packs down small in my opinion. I carry it under my Falcon-II with out any problems. Doesn't stick out or get caught on things. It's got a bathtub floor and the rain fly is completely removable if you want to use it simply as a bug net.

Then you had an opportunity to test the difference between theory and reality. Experience is a great teacher, even if she's hard and cruel.

150 is doable, I have upgraded my bag to a kelty coyote 4750, from a dakine apex 26L, so now I have ore room, but do you guys think 4570CI is over the top?

Yep. Go to Walmart, to the camping section. Bring $50.
They have $20 hammocks
$10 mosquito nets
$10 camping tarps that fold down smaller than the poly tarps
$10 blue sleeping pads.

Get all that, and a little bit of 550 cord for a ridgeline. Get you some tent stakes while you're there.

Admittedly, all this crap is bright blue.

I have all that crap, and it works fine. For a little more dough, you can hit up REI for a bigger brown tarp, and Sports Authority has a slightly smaller grey and green hammock. More tactical, don't you know.

Please forgive the pitch of the tarp. There were mitigating circumstances.

I found a woodland camo tarp on Amazon and they had the same one at my local surplus store. I have one I keep in my car. Only $12!

I have a couple of these gor-tex army shelters, the military issues them.
nice little one man tents, and has a rain fly. and mesh sides if you open it up to let air in. I'm sure the local pawn shop or army surplus store will have one

fits in a bag that is about 18 inches long x 8 inches around. pretty light weight.

Good kit, that. We get issued them too. Try Ebay or Bookoo. If you get one of these little bug tents, throw your iso mat on the inside to help is stay level and so that the mat doesn't come out from under you during the night. with the flaps closed, you get the water proofing and wind protection of a bivvy bag, but I've had fewer issues with condensation in the tent, although it doesn't insulate as well as the bivvy, due to it's tenty nature.

You, sir, have inspired me. And I can absolutely do this on my budget. Best of all, I already have a "sleeping pad" (ex yoga mat turned shooting pad) and a variety of tarps. I sense adventure!

Just so you know, the tarp in my photo is actually two 5x7s sewn together, so I can fit my bicycle and gear under it. One just barely covers the hammock.

And a quick question, my "sleeping pad" is not small (rolls to prob 18H x 4-6d). What do you recommend as far as a smaller version from the land of Waltons?

I have a camo Grand Trunk UL hammock (found on amazon for about 20 dollars). It's classic 3 color camo, and blends nicely. I also use 1 of those backpackers tarps from walmart. I am looking for a bugnet however. I agree a light, effective setup can be had on the cheap. Love the hammock!
