It's kind of a toss up, this bag plus the silk liner make it a 3 season bag for around (200.00) vs. the Softie 12 Osprey which is about (300.00)...but the Softie 12 Osprey is a complete system, so it's nice.

Personally my little bag has served me well through winter and summer. It's damn warm in the witner and damn hot in the summer ;)

I usually zip it all the way open and use her as sort of a blanket in the summer months.

Spend on the money on a bag you can afford and that meets your climate. Everything else is incidental.

SharkChild was cool enough to take and host pictures of my BOB on me. This bag is fully loaded minus my battle rattle (armor, guns and ammo) but it's all gassed up and ready to go camping.

You can see the scale on the ground between my legs in the last picture. My BOB weighs roughly 75# at the time of this photo. With full battle gear, add another 20#.

I can hear you say, "Jesus Christ Gunny, that's heavy as shit!" I implore you to put on my BOB and go for a hike. After that hike you'll realize why we few pay what we do for a Kifaru system. I can hike with my full set of gear for several miles a day (last hike was 7mi) and come out feeling no worse than hungry.

Thanks again Shark.

No problem, glad I could help . If you see that bag in real life it is huge. I could not believe till I saw it.

Where did you get the big hooks at(carabine). They don't have any at Academy. :( I really like the idea of the (carabine) spelling and the nalgene bottle.

DId you go to the rock climbing section? If they don't have some there try any out door sports (non hunting) or just any sports store, they have them with climbing gear.

From the pictures it doesn't look so big. Maybe Gunny is really 15 feet tall.

Gunny, I think it may be time for you to consider getting some ITW NEXUS WEB DOMINATOR W/ SHOCK CORD and tidy up all those loose straps.

...and to all those that dont have a Kifaru pack, go sell a kidney and get one. You wont regret it.

Squirrley wrote:From the pictures it doesn't look so big. Maybe Gunny is really 15 feet tall.

Yeah Gunny, how tall are you?

Reason I ask is from the Kifaru.net site and the catalogue I got the impression that the EMR and the MMR were monster tall "moving to a new F.O.B" style rucks. I really liked the Zulu but figured it had more of a big bigass 3day pack sort of role than what I wanted out of my main bag. The ZXR seemed a good compromise for what I wanted out of my main bag so I've worked my shopping list around that so far. Since it's going to do pseudoINCH work I figured having all the wraptech/suspension goodness I could get was a good thing while still retaining maximum mobility.

I'm near on 6'3" (more in jump boots). Going on your photos wearing your pack the EMR doesn't seem to be too monstrous (like it does in woods walker's pics of his elsewhere or your pics of yours earlier in this thread).

How compressed 'down' have you got the bag in those pics?

Here's the ZXR being worn by the fellow from http://www.militarymorons.com stuffed to the nines and with an underslung pod and the XTL...
Image

The ZXR being worn from the http://www.kifaru.net site with the XTL (but no pod) and not stuffed as much as the one in the MM photo seems to be...
Image

And here's the EMR from the kifaru site looking pretty stuffed but minus the pod...
Image

Obviously the size of the guys in the photos vary, as does the degree of "stuffed-edness" and "compressed down-edness."
I'm starting to wonder if I should re-think the EMR over the ZXR. :?

That EMR pic from Kifaru is a little misleading/optical illusion with that pointman or whatever the hell it is piggy backed onto it.

Also, somehwere on here there's a dude from Iraq that has his EMR I think, or some big one, with a zulu I think piggybacked, and THAT looks like a HUGE system.

Do you have any buyers? Cause if so, I'm totally down, if I get a schweet Kifaru rig out of the deal. Not just the bag, but all the add-ons and organizing pouches n shit too. And if there's any other organs I can sell to get the tipi/wood stove setup, I'm game.

I'm not tall, maybe 6'1" on a good day.

The kifaru website shows their packs fully stuffed to the brim. Not sure what they're using, but every cubic inch is filled. I like to keep a tight pack so I cinch my straps down tight so the pack doesn't slosh or rattle.

With my battle rattle I think the pack would be a bit bigger, and with winter gear shed be near capacity. In those pics I'm using about 2/3 of her total volume.

Pirate, I agree mate, definatly need strap management.

I have them. Too bad you shamelessly throw sexual comments at my sister and never apologize. Maybe you can ask Gunny, Grifter, or TachMedic22 for theirs.

(plus i can't make anymore - there is a copyright for ZS and they never gave me the go ahead to make more, so the original batch is all I have)

Something like that?

Thanks for the sizing/capacity info btw. Much appreciated. I think the EMR will be the go.

That second house better sell for a lot over market value.

Doc, I'm drafting you a PM. I want to get a couple of things cleared up before I pull any other bone-headed shit around here.

IMO the MMR is friggin awesome, it really depends on what you're looking for in a pack though. A week long excursion for me easily fits into my MMR to include my poncho liner, but I had everything attached since we were only allowed "one bag" on the helicopter, and I had to move my entire operation. The whole set up stacked together holds and handles well, but amounted to around 120-130# on my back. Despite this, the suspension setup for the MMR was beautiful, resulted in no back or shoulder stress really. I sent a few e-mails to Kifaru to get some ideas on the different systems and basically this is the gist of what I got back:

1) The MMR and ZXR are roughly the same size and similar suspensions, the difference being the ZXR has slot pockets that the MMR does not, but the MMR has side-zips for access and an internal bag divider that you can chose to use or disengage. The frame of the MMR is removeable to use as a cargo hauler if you want.

2) The EMR is a larger MMR, it is bigger in girth as well as length. The EMR also has the extendable snow collar that the MMR does not have, adding a few inches of depth.

3) All 3 are really kind of big for a 3-day type pack, but they can compress down fairly well (my MMR compresses damned near flat if it's empty)

I settled on the MMR because I did not feel I would need the absolute monstrous capacity of the EMR and there is a certain point where stuff just gets lost inside a pack. I am one of those guys that loves to compartmentalize and having all my junk in one giant hole of a pack kinda sucks, so I love the divider built into the MMR (you can remove it by undoing the straps) and the XTL. Whatever pack you get, I definitely recommend an XTL.

One of the things I noted as a big difficulty is that if you have the bag stuffed out and things attached to the sides (i.e. long pockets, etc) then it can be a pain getting through doors. I don't know what it's like with the more girthy EMR but I know with my MMR and back pouches on each side it's a tight fit. Also, with everything attached the way I had it, don't anticipate being able to turn around very well in an urban environment :D For true field use though, I think it'd be hard to be disappointed with any of the 3 (EMR, MMR, ZXR).
