Duckys B.O.B

Postby Ducky » Sun Jul 31, 2011 2:53 pm

So I finaly got off my ass and pushed some gear togeather.
This is my take on a extended stay minimalist setup. The sleeping arangments aren't the Rits but it will keep you dry and alive. LOL
I have provided myself with enough food to last me for about 5 days but would definetly take advantage of any opportunity to scavange food along the way.
I have several places that I can go with in 10-20 miles if something small happens(tornado, bad storm ect...) If it is a whole world event and ends up in a PAW situation then I would head north 5200miles to Alaska where the population density is much lower and where I know how to survive. (plus, everyone knows zombies are slower in the cold)
As with any BOB this is a work in progress and will change and evolve as I get new gear or as the situation and weather demand it.
So lets get this picture show on the road
Here it is all layed out. I will get more detailed and go over each section below.
Image
I dont plan on going everywhere guns a blazin. If anything I would rather keep a low profile. Thats why (as you will see later) I went with a "Grey" pack and a shotgun&Pistol instead of a AR-15 or AK-47. In the future I hope to add a folding/colapsibul stock to the shotgun so that I may pack it away easyer and bring less atention to myself. For Immediate self defence defence I carry my Pistol. Beretta PX4 Storm .40 cal.

Food n Stuff
I know what some of you are thinking. "Hey man, where is the alcohol stove you are always making and selling on here?" Dont worry, I still have and use my Alcohol stove. I just wanted to play around a bit more with my Vargo Ti Wood stove.
I have 5 SOS rations coming in the mail. 3 will go in the bag to replace the rice meals and maybie the MRE. The reason for this is, Greater shelf life and less food that I have to boil water for. Which means more water that I can boil to drink. All of the oatmeal packs neatly away inside my Ti pot. I usualy have a package or two of tuna in the foil packs as well but I got hungry one day and have yet to replace them.
Image

Random Crap
Image
I figured I would just list this stuff as most of it is self explanitory. If an item needs more explination I will give it a quick description.
Working top left to right.
- Water Purification tablets
- Aquamira frontier pro water filter
- Sharpie
- Duct Tape
- Compas
- EZ Towels (compressed TP, Just add a few drops of water. Very cool)
- Small fishing kit In box
- Matches in waterproof container
- Lighter
- Camp soap
- Headlamp (1AA)
- Leatherman (ferocium firestarter in side part of elastic on Leatherman pouch)
- 50lb Braided fishingline 300yards (Snares,sewing thread, tripwires,netting, ect...)
- 2 dust masks
- Inova X2 LED flashlight (2AA)
- Paracord
- Emergency Blanket
- IFAK (extra batteries in IFAK. Why, i'm not sure)
- OTIS gun cleaning kit

Clothing N Crap
Image
I am hardly ever without a coat when im away form the house. Even if its 100+ outside I feel the need to have some sort of extra outer layer at least in my truck.
So most of my clothing i have packed is intended to add to my base layer or to keep me warm at night.
- Flece vest
- Long Underware
- Wool socks
- Buff headware.
As far as shelter I have
- REI Minimalist bivy
- Emergency tarp (reflective on one side)

I also have a black trash bag for water colection/poncho/anythign elce I want it to be.
The Knife Is a Muela Storm <-- Great knife

I like to keep Everything in its own bag. It makes retraving things out of the pack easier. And since they are wally world dry sacks they add an extra lever of protection form the water. Image

Here is everything packed away, as you can see there is a bit more room in the bag so i can fill it with more stuff if needed.
Image

The pack is a outdoor Products bag that I picked up for $30 from wal mart.
I normaly wouldnt buy a bag from walmart but this one caught my eye one day.
It is made of heavy duty ruber canvas like a dry bag and has a roll top closure with a heavy duty zippered top lid on it.
The top lid has a few pockets on it and a zippered pouch as well, all on the underside of the lid. The padding and suspension are fairly decent for a bag priced this low. It had an internal plastic frame sheete that has a bit of contour molded into it. all of the.
One thing I like is that it has two pouches on the sides, that fit a 2L bladder very well. The nice part about the baldders being on the sides is that when they are full it dosn't make the pack bulge out and make it uncomfortabul.
Image
Image
Image
The pack rides like any normal pack would and fells good. I am confident that this pack wouldnt kill me on a long treck.
Yes, I know, I need to clean my mirror. My son is 2 and likes to see if he can splash the mirror from the bathtub.
Eventualy you just get tired of cleaning the damn thing off.

Maybe Some form of water storage besides the bladder. A small Nalgene or similar bottle with measuring increments on the side would also help with measuring water to be used in your packaged food.

Nice and simple, I like it. Would love to see a little more on the knife.
Hoping to bring back common sense to the prepping community.

Is the shotgun inside of the bag when you took the mirror pictures? If so, that fits REALLY well, what're the dimensions of it?

I have 2 clips for the pistol
the shotgun will hold 6 shots and Idealy I would only like to cary maybie one or two boxes of extra shells. In reality if there was a situation that warented the need for the shotgun I would probaly take a whole lot more.
BullOnParade wrote:Maybe Some form of water storage besides the bladder. A small Nalgene or similar bottle with measuring increments on the side would also help with measuring water to be used in your packaged food.

I am often critisised for not carring more water storage devices. But I consider my self to be very good at finding water and have never found myself actualy needing more than one 2L Bladder. On the other hand, Seeings as I am not carrying a real sleeping bag I think I will add a nalgeene so that I can use the Hot nalgeene in my sleeping bag trick. I can not deny the many uses of a nalgeene.
The Ti pot dose have graduations on the inside but I rarley use them. Ususaly just eyeball it.

No, It is not. ALTHOUGH, With a folding stock I belive that it will fit in there.

A Beretta PX4 takes magazines not clips.

Calling a magazine a clip in some places is like farting during a prayer, it brings unwanted attention.

Very nice selection of the PX4, though. Looks like you have made a great start.

What's your take on the Muela? One of the guys I work with swears by them, but he's from Spain (like the Muela!) so I suspect he might be a bit biased. They seem solid, I was eyeing their Pioneer.

Geeze, Ok, Hows this. I have two spring loaded metal rectangular devises intended for the storage and dispersion of buuuulets into a firearm. LOL is that better?

NuggetHoarder:
That procces sounds like it would take a while and has the potential to be a pain in the ass. I have always just thrown a purification tablet into the baldder and then hooked the Frontier Pro up to the bladder and drank from that. As far as waiting 4 hours. I have always just waited about a half an hour, 4 hours is a long frikkin time. I have done it this way before and im still alive and I havent pooped all over meyself yet so it seems to be working. :)
I will check out the Aqua Pouch, It sounds interesting
I agree on the shotgun sling. The shot gun needs some work for shure.

It has really turned out to be a great knife. It is really comfortable in the hand and the weight seems to be fairly well ballanced. It can take some time to sharpen if you want to do it right but it will get razor sharp and hold an edge for quite a long time. For the longest time I was convinced that I wanted to get a Gerber LMFII but I decided to go with this one instead. Partly because I already had it and 2nd because it is a great knife.

Domindart wrote:I like the backpack, its very "gray man".

And it was cheap too :D
I am kindof a Backpack nut and normaly find myself only likeing things that are a lot more expensive but when i saw this one I couldnt pass it up.

What is that eating utensil?
It looks like my plastic ones but ti?

ETA: I just saw that light my fire utensil in Ti for the first time, thanks for posting your bag.

The waterproof match case you have, ever tried to use the striker on the bottom?
I've never gotten it to work on mine.

Oh and where are the comms?
I don't know your situation but at least communication between your group.
I'd prefer to have a ham band but that's something I'm still working on myself.

I Got it to work once. That little striker down there is a joke.

Im on the fence when it coms to comms as well.
Idealy I would like to Have a Yaseus VX-8R It has more functions than I would know how to handle. And (if you have the right certifications) with a simple mod you can transmit on police/fire/EMS bands. Oh and it only cost like $800
So you can probably see why I dont have one of those.

Idealy I would liketo have a device that will get AM/FM, Short wave, Weatherband, have SAMT tech, Run off AA's, Be waterproof, and if it can transmit on some channels that would be cool too. and still be under $100. ......... Im still looking

Though I do not trust or buy "Outdoor" brand anything (I even broke a 1 week old match case) I am intrigued by the design of that ruck.

Good concept you have though. Basic things covered. I am also a firm beleiever in seperation of hiking backpack from BOB and it looks like that is what is happening here? If so bravo. If not, you're just fine anyways. :)

Additions:
Nalgene bottle or another container. You'll find it to be just plain useful.
Some little AM radio of some kind. Anything really, until you get your dream radio. Like me you will find that you maybe just don't need the dream radio

Got my SOS rations in yesterday. I was pleasently supprised at their small size. I think I will add two of these and get rid of all but one rice meal.
Here is a Pic of the new food setup. Remember, oatmeal in pot.

I like to keep my BOB gear seperate from my camping gear as well. Although from time to time I will borrow some of my BOB gear for a camping trip.
Another reason I keep it seperate is because with this setup I still have a sleep system but I dont have to worry about my sleeping bag being compressed and ready to go for long periods of time.

As for the striker I have added a strip off of the box (even though I carry strike anywheres).
The yaesu you mentioned is one I've looked at too, I thought they were more like $500 nicely equipped with better batteries and gps antenna/speaker mic etc.
But I gave up on that radio due to too many problems with them (reviews at eham.com)
I am also looking for that dream radio for $100 but I have such a long list of dream stuff that it's hard to focus on any of it...especially when guys like you keep posting more stuff.

Is there a huge difference between water bladders and water bottles? Wouldnt it be easier to just load up on a few water bottles and not worry about leaks, mold, cleaning and taste issues with a bladder? Or is it theres something to it like less weight and ease of use, because I dont get it. What if your BOB is old military surplus like an Alice pack or an East German rucksack can or would you retro fit those for a bladder?
