Ready For Another Contest? MORE PRIZES ADDED!

Postby xxxDarksidexxx » Tue Jan 04, 2011 8:14 pm

i was going to post this some time back, but i was waiting for some of the additional prizes. well, those never showed up and the holidays are now behind us now, so here goes...

im thinking its time for another contest! we already had a poor mans BOB contest ( i think i came in second place  ), a MPSK contest ( i disqualified myself since i refused to change my kit, and follow the rules  ), and the GHB contest ( which i won! 8) ) but i think there has never been a bug out contest...

so, i would LOVE to see a WINTER BUG OUT CONTEST!!!

i know a lot of you got new gear for christmas, hanukkah, or maybe even kwanzaa! im sure you guys are just itching to get out in the snow and freezing cold to try it out. the rules should be pretty simple. get out for AT LEAST an overnight trip, use as much of your gear as possible, review all gear used ( i wanna know the good and the bad ) i also think this trip should include some amount of hiking. it doesnt need to be a 20 mile hike in the snow, but at least a few miles would be good. i also want to see guys using their skills like, fire making, food/water gathering, and any other bushcraft type skill you want us to see. your entry MUST include photos, and or videos!!!

i also think your entry should include as much info about your trip such as miles hiked, amount of time spent outside, wind temps as well as wind chill, and any other bit of information you could add to make your felllow ZS'ers feel like we went on the trip with you.

i think this contest should run till about mid february to give plenty of time to get out.

i will not enter this contest, however i do have a trip planned towards the end of this month ( hopefully around a nice cold front ) but i will post up a trip just to join in on the fun.

what i will do is offer up some prizes, or perhaps a gift card to the winner. hopefully some others may offer up a prize as well. speaking of prizes here is a pic of the prizes i did get from two GREAT guys. Blackdog and WhoshotJR... im looking at you guys! i got an under armour "cold gear" fleece/sweater, a compass, and a kick ass silva lighter from Blackdog, and i got a 25.00 gift certificate to backcountry.com from WhoshotJR that i used to buy a few 1ltr collapsible platy bottles ( im only showing one as the rest got tucked into kits ) THANKS AGAIN GUYS!

SO WHO IS READY FOR ANOTEHR CONTEST? :D

It is hard to get people to sleep outside during winter.

If only I had brought my bug out gear down with me for Christmas break! It has actually been above freezing for the last several days, and it has only been raining a little bit.

Maybe I'll find some place to do this back up in Fairbanks, but with my luck it will be back down to -40. Screw that.

Nature demands respect but rarely gives any in return. Winter camping is old hat and fun but never a cake walk. I think there is some wind and snow in the forecast for this weekend. I will have to check my calendar as been out nearly every weekend. My responsibilities are starting to pile up. :( Goes without saying I will pack a stove. 8)

I'll give it a try. I'll have to borrow a camera from someone, though. Trying to take pictures with the iPhone is just annoying at times.

Simple rules a plus. If this gets off the ground I will pony up something useful as a prize.

there are several new designs that i need to get finished and tested anyways. i will participate but exclude myself from any chance of placing in the contest.

there will be a small grey tipi w/ stovejack given to the winning winter bugout.

i say the beggining of March for the finishing date. that way i can get the dyneema tent finished and use it. i am really
stoked on this one.

Some of the VA/MD/DC guys are meeting up Mid-Feburary. If the contest isn't over before then, I'll toss some pics and equipment lists up.
Does your BOB at least have: water, basic tools, fire, food, first-aid kit, and shelter?

Things don't get any better I will be using my gear everyday to live.
Been having a freaking hard time finding a job.
No one wants to hire a old fucker anymore :x
Winter camping is fun though.
Me and a friend did a month long camp in Colorado couple years back and had a helluva time.
Temps where around 35 during the day and 20's at night.

What kind of criteria is going to be used?
In the past contests have basically been gear based - who has got and put the best gear together.
Is this going to be the same or what?

I may join, how about in a bug out fashion...limited shelters or constructed shleters from nature and only the gear, say a normal 3 day bob would have.

wood stoves seems like cheating...even though I want one, sorry WW

Sleeping bag or bivy combo, small stove setup (iso fuel, multifuel), limited food,

This may equal the playing field and give us all a challenge to test our skills at the same time??

the only problem is those of us in snow contry need more gear then those of you in the south, like a pulk or snow shoes etc

How about a timeframe of 24 hours minumum?

ARGHLEFLARGHLE.

Fine. I suppose I can make my hunting trip into a bug out trip. Just means that food will end up being squirrel rather than packed rations. :-D

i have just a few seconds to respond now, but i like your thoughts on this. i would say it should be based on a 3 day BOB setup. keep in mind packs tent to get a little fatter and heavier for winter as guys add items to deal with the cold, so i say if you plan on packing a tent for your winter setup, then go for it. i DONT think the contest should be based on who has the best, or most expensive gear, rather the contest should be based on " who can do the most with what THEY have/need in their enviroment " i agree this will need to be at least a 24hr trip.

i will respond more on this this evening.

i think the use of woodstoves in a winter environment needs to be allowed. not allowing them
would not stay true to the winter survival situation as most pioneers and early settlers would not
have survived the mountain winters without stoves. packable woodstoves are an easy addition to
a bugout kit and should not be excluded.
