Boiling water in the tin is almost counter productive-you dont get enough to keep you hydrated. It CAN be done, but WHY? Thats the thing-I am sure I could do it in the mess tin too-just to say I did (as you did). But, again, its to prove it can be done-not that its practical.

I agree with you here and that is why I put Puritabs in the kit. I just wanted to see if it could be done, no matter how ridiculously slow it would be to fill a waterbag. LOL.

Hell, a monkey can drive a car-but why would you let one?

Come to think of it, where would you get one trained to do it? Ok, sorry, off topic. You proved the concept. Now we can all move forward :)

i like the idea of an otterbox or pelican case better than the altoids tin but that's my preference. could you maybe fit an aqua pouch or platypus bottle in there somehow? also a jumbo sized bandanna would be a good addition imo.

I figure a couple things into the equation, when carrying something like this. First, I have at least 1 knife on me, usually 2 (one being my multitool). So, any kind of cutting instrument in the kit is simply an extra bonus. Second, I always have a handkerchief on me-again, negating the need to add one. Third, I always have a flashight on me, when I have my multitool (the pouch I carry it in has room for that & a metal match). That leaves a little more room in the kit for kit-things.

A quick note, for those who carry condoms in these kits; they dont reliably hold water all by themselves (ie, they break on you, just like on prom night). The CORRECT way to use one is to place it INSIDE a sock, for some structural rigidity, THEN fill it. this way, it keeps it from bursting.

As most of you know, I'm always looking for ways to improve my setup and kit. I was carrying my "Ultimate Altoids Tin" (UAT) in my pocket for a week and found it rather uncomfortable...not TOO uncomfortable, but just enough for me to know that it was there and I didn't like it.

So I bought a Condor Multi-Pocket Pouch and put my "UAT" into it. Here it is inside the Condor pouch and with additional equipment that I thought would be good to have and didn't have enough room to put inside my UAT. Here's a pic with a nickel for a reference:

Image

When you open the front pouch flap, you have access to the contents:

A Rescue Whistle and a dedicated Signal Mirror.

On the inside the UAT is found anlong with a new addition, a map of the AO and a lightweight clear poncho that can be used for shelter or gathering water:

Here is the entire kit on display:

I hope you guys like this little gem and as always look forward to your reviews!

Nice Kit! :)

I´ll shamelessly copy some/most of it...!

It looks a little bigger, but more conformable. It's still pocketable? (You do pocket carry it, right?)

I was carrying the tin in my pocket, but it was a little uncomfortable because of its "double-wide" size. That's why I got the Condor to put it in. I currently keep this kit in my Jeep and if I go to the bush, I strap it on my belt. With this Condor Pouch, I now have a poncho shelter and a space blanket and all of the other essential survival equipment I deem necessary. It is very light and convenient and when attched to my belt, feels like it's not even there.

This has become a permanent part of my survival kit.

I got it at the GI Joe's Military Surplus in Newport News, Va. As I recall, the price was around $10.00 and they were available in Coyote, OD and Black.

Just a thought, and not to over-complicate the build, but what about making the two tins in to one deep one? I would image that that would grant you some extra space and if you really needed to boil water, more volume.
I'm not sure if that'd interfere with the way you have it set up now in regards to having the two sides cordoned off, but like I said, it's just at thought.
I really like this, by the way. I'm amazed with how much stuff you've got in there!

Back in the early 80’s we used to carry two tins, one each end of a cord so they hung down below our armpits, the Idea being if you got “bagged” they would probably miss them on a quick search, but even if you lost your smock you would still have some kit.

Your kit looks good. I had the same idea with the pouch , i just use a single wide tin in the pouch with a poncho . The outer pocket i keep my cell phone in.

I have a couple altoid tin kits that work quite well, but recently I have been using Burt's Bees hand salve in the large tin. It's about the same size as an Altoids only a bit deeper. Just a thought, not to hijack your initial post or anything.

Another alternative is the tin that fossil wallets come in. To big to fit in your butt or hip pockets but would fit in a cargo pocket on legs. Would be great to keep small contents in when placed in a pack or bag. I got a fossil wallet for Christmas from the wife yay! If I remember tonight I can post the dimensions. Only draw back I could think of is price obviously but if your looking for a new wallet...

Funny you should mention that! Guess what my wife bought me for Christmas? That's right! A Fossil Wallet! I had the exact same idea! I think I'll give it a try when I get a chance!

Nice kit. Obviously the tins are not water proof, but while assembling mine at the kitchen table today one of my wife's cork coasters caught my eye. Now I am gluing one on the outside of either lid, cut to match, as a buoyancy aid. Depending on the final weight it should be enough to keep it out of the bottom of a deep lake, stream, etc. without adding much overall mass to the unit.
