September GHB Contest

Postby WhoShotJR » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:34 pm

If everyone agrees, I think the contest should have pretty simple rules.

The scenario is that some event has happened big enough to effect at least your local area. No one is driving due to gridlock, cars won't start, whatever. People are concerned, scared, angry, they aren't in a good mood. You decide that it's time to get yourself home.

To give everyone a more equal base to start from, the only gear you have is what's on your person and for this assume you have just left a courthouse or a federal building. You only have items which you could have taken in there, phone, keys, wallet, etc. Out of your car you have a pack with 20 pounds worth of gear, plus however much water you want to take.

That's pretty much all of the rules, all entries due by Septemer 30 by midnight Pacific. Winner will be chosen by a poll, which will stay open until October 7 midnight Pacific. There's already a pretty sweet pot of prizes which will go to one winner, which already includes:
A Woodsman's Pal kit
Princeton Tec Pulsar II keychain light
Kosovo hooah shirt
$25 towards ZS gear/membership or $25 gift certificate to goinggear.com or another prep related store that sells gift certificates. Winner's choice.
I will contribute a $20 credit towards items in my 'For Sale' thread. (from sigboy40)

Creativity and actually using the GHB will most likely determine the winner. You may want to be stealthy, make an overnighter, take lots of pics, explain your reasoning/philosophy. This one comes with bragging rights, and looks to be at least $150 worth of swag to go with it.

Open for comments/ideas for a few days, but I want the rules set as soon as we can so entries can start to come in.

My GHB is now for sale! Check my GHB thread for details!

OMG!
The Courthouse has been destroyed by a unknown disaster! The Judges favorite Personal Assistant has fled the scene in a panic! Their last known position is appx-34.9319°N 101.6952°W

The search will begin on foot at appx 1700 hours, the search will begin at this location-34.9843°N 101.6889°W

The extraction will be done entirely on foot. The perils will be many. Rattlesnakes, Tarrantulas, skunks, and angry rams are but a few of our dangers. Flash Floods are likely. Bushcraft skills will be necesary to supplement our light gear. This mission will require at least 18 miles of trekking on difficult terrain, and may require a night in the outdoors. Hopefully we will arive back with our mission accomplished.

I am withdrawing my submission, I wrote up the trip three times and have lost it three times! I'm out!

range? some people live close to work, some don't. personally i live about 25 miles from work (hard terrain plus water obstacles), so my load out is going to be a bit more than someone who has a loft downtown.

I specifically left range out of it because, who knows where you would be? Work, out of town, whatever. I imagine the more range you kit is equipped for, the better. The guy who works one block from his house, and posts a GHB of half a bottle of water and a peppermint candy probably won't be winning the contest.

Seriously, I think the challenge is to come up with the most creative, versatile kit that meets the very simple rules. If you have unique challenges, show us your unique solutions.

Here's what I keep on me. I'm using old pics for this post and I'm too lazy to make new ones.

Image

~sunglasses
~keys
~small knife
~phone
~phone charger (yes, I carry it around)
~lighter
*Not shown-wallet with cash and cards

Since we're leaving a federal building, I'll switch my handgun to "car gear" since that is where it stays when I'm in places I can't carry.

Image

On to my bag. I probably pack a few more things than most, but I have kids and this does stay in my truck. Plus as one member stated, it's also about a 28 mile distance for me home from work. I went with your run-of-the-mill bag since I want to keep a low profile...

Image

On the left outside pocket I keep a cheap water bottle containing:
~couple hand sanitizer wipes
~Bic lighter with approx. 6' of duct tape around it
~4 Immodium
~Krazy Glue
~spare loaded mag
~insect repellent with sunblock
~water tabs
~#2 coffee filter

On the right outside pocket:
~another spare loaded mag for quick reach
Little pocket behind that:
~Streamlight TLR1 with a quarter taped to it (explanation in a second) with spare batteries

Image

Bottom outside pocket:
~1200 calorie "1 day" Mayday bar
~teepee (always if you have a little girl)

Image

Top outside pocket:
~sillcock key
~emergency blanket
~zip ties (those have almost as many uses as duct tape)
~50' of cord (Charlie Bronson always has rope.)

Image

Inside pocket:
~Nalgene bottle with #2 coffee filter
~boonie (Vietnam tiger stripe ftw and I don't care if I look like a goober)
~gloves
~$8.86 Johnson & Johnson FAK
~1L of high-quality H2O
~cheap pancho (hopefully it's not storming)

OK. Here's why I keep a quarter taped to the TLR1 light...it's the only tool required to mount it to a gun. I'm not a proponent of a light attached to a gun for HD, but having a gun attached to my light (with a one finger on/off switch) walking home in the SHTF would make me feel tons mo' bettah.

Regarding all the prizes.

Why not 1st, 2nd and 3rd? More people that way get to share in the generosity of ZS.

Before this developing thread gets all cluttered up with random GHB packing lists and photos, might I suggest that everybody keep their powder dry until they can make a comprehensive post regarding their get-home route, how it pertains to their kit contents, and the epic saga of their get-home drill?

There are already eleventy billion GHB threads and they're almost all monotonously similar, it would get annoying have to scan through ten pages of unpacked GHB photos just to find a relevant post or two about the parameters of the contest. If everybody knows what you're packing before the contest is go, where's the fun?

I'm in. I'll update this post when I get it settled. I plan on a 5.5 mile trip, as that will allow me to travel safely on the roads. (I'll go through my backyard to add some bushcraft pics as well.)

This is like Top Gun, there is no points for second place.

Also, due to the fact that we ourselves are donating prizes to the winners, it doesn't matter much.

Would you like to volunteer a prize to the second place contestant?

I have an almost 50 mile trip from home to work so my GHB has to basically be a BOB. Overnight is required at least 2 nights depending on when "it" happens. 20 pounds might be possible, but tough to do while maintaining personal happiness. I will attempt to cull a 20 pound GHB and see how it goes.

Space reserved for when/if I find an acceptable way to do this.

Can we assume this exodus will occur in September?
That way extreme winter or summer gear need not be packed.

Are we assumed to have gone into the courthouse with our hiking shoes on?
Or should we consider ourselves dress shoes, suit and tie?

I don't know about everyone else, but I will just be wearing street clothing. Yes I will be getting home across 16 miles (measured distance from my local courthouse to home) in canvas shoes. I don't carry my jungle boots around with me and I'm not going to start for this contest.

To clarify: Some people seem to think this is a bag-building contest, and some people seem to be planning on actually walking home from work/a courthouse.

Which is it?
