What are the rules for reused material aka trash\refuse like plastic bottles, empty cans, etc etc?

Body count is as follows:

Camelbak Mule $2.99 (salvation army)
Piper Gear 3-day\Traveler pack $5.99 (goodwill)
Piper Gear BUG OUT bag x2 $5.99 each @ (goodwill)
Leatherman Wave 20 anniversary edition $20 (pawn shop)

I passed up a SOG Seal Pup for $14.95 at a Pawn shop because I didn't like the way they had been sharpening it.

Those deals are out there, hunt'em up. I'm really starting to enjoy being a scrounger again :D

As soon as my one ordered item is in, I will be finished and ready to post.

I don't have a problem counting your own trash as zero cost if it is reproducible for most people. [I don't want to hear something like, 'we throw out 1/2 empty cans of OC at work so i fished one out of the trash so it's free!"].

and for legality and fairness: no dumpster diving!!

ok, here is my poor man's BOB.

i tried to make it as easy as possible to duplicate, so i didnt order anything on-line. ( if im poor i dont have money for good gear, let alone shipping charges )
also, not everyone has credit cards or debit cards for easy on-line ordering, or even ordering over the phone for that matter.

all items were purchased new for this project, so all prices listed are current. the only items not purchased will be priced with a FMV. if i list an item that was split
from a package of like items i will put an ( * ) next to the item.

i will be happy to answer any questions, and i have reciepts for EVERYTHING unless its a FMV/FREE item.

if there is something listed that you dont see, just ask. ( some items are in the FAK )

there are some items that didnt make it into the bags. this was a 20.00 backpack from walmart along with a walmart hydraion bladder 10.00. it is a full size backpack with a
pocket for the hydration bladder. i also found a naglene bottle on clearence for 8.00 i will post an additional photo at the bottom to show these items in case
somone wants to see. you can build a half decent starter BOB for around 150.00 so the 100.00 budget was a challange! this bag will be my GHB with the few upgraded items!

also added to a basic bob would be...( if i need to assign a FMV let me know. it will break my 100.00 budget if i do )

EDIT TO ADD FMV TO CLOTHS

3 pair of socks* - 2.10 wal mart ( they sell them for 7.00 a ten pack, these are the socks i wear all the time/hanes )
3 pair of underwear - free ( i just bought a couple new packs to replace my old/wore out ones, so these would have went to the trash )
1 pair of shorts - 2.50 - FMV ( i didnt buy these, but goodwill sells shorts for 2.00/cheaper at a garage sale )
2 white tee shirts* - 3.16 walmart ( 9.50 for a six pack. i go through a few packs of these a year, and i always cut them up when im done for rags and gun cleaning patches. i could go free with these, but since my budget is now busted, i will put FMV on them :( )

Man, this no dumpster diving is killing me. I've gotten some great stuff that way. Like those three REI packs I found in a free pile on the side of the road. The one I kept ended up being a $200 pack. Oh well.

Re: poor man's BOB contest?

Postby WhoShotJR » Mon Nov 30, 2009 10:00 pm

My submission will probably differ from a lot of other people's. First of all it is a 'I'm bugging out to someplace other than my home' bag as opposed to a 'I'm going on a three day hike' bag. My idea of a $100 BOB is something that can be assembled with off of the shelf items (no thrift store items, etc) and able to be used by anyone. Thinking of the everyman's BOB. Or a soccer mom's. The idea of running out into the woods and surviving for three days, for the average person, is very unlikely. With that in mind, this BOB is built for the more likely scenarios of car breakdowns, stuck on the side of the road, being stuck at friends/family due to weather, not able to go home due to localized disaster, earthquake, forest fire, emergency visit to someone in the hospital, etc. Maybe you're stuck in your car due to a blizzard, or forced to spend a few days in a Red Cross shelter. For whatever reason you can't go home and BOB is all you have.

The overall goal is to prepare for the greatest variety of disasters while staying as close to the dollar limit as possible. Just for fun, this will be a five day kit as opposed to the standard three day kit.

A popular example where this kit could have made a huge difference is James Kimhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Kim.

Ideally it would be kept in your vehicle, with one for each family member with exception of only needing one kit with items which can be shared (nail clippers, etc).

This kit does not have clothing (except wool outerwear) because it is intended to be universal. If you build a kit for someone else tell them to add 1 pr pants, 1 short and 1 long sleeve shirt, 2 pr socks, 2 pr underwear, old comfortable walking shoes, and a jacket/fleece. Things they don't wear anymore but still fit and are in good condition.

The bag is a duffel bag from Target-$10.99- which came inside of another bag, which gives two bags to work with.

If my math is working that totals $101.90, all retail.

It all adds up to a bag with wool (socks, gloves, watch cap, and blanket), a workable first aid kit, a hygiene kit that will work both with and without water, 5 days of no cook food, 6+ days water, basic shelter, 70+ hours of light, 30+ hours of candle flame, and protection from various environmental factors.

Yes please post them all here.

And in reply to the question about clothes:

If you add underwear, socks, Tshirt etc. that you already have, you do have to add the FMV.

That said for most guys the FMV of used underwear is very very low. If the FMV for your underwear is significant . . . I do not want to know!

and, Your trash is free. SO a ratty old shirt heading for the trash can anyway is free. Old underwear and socks, codl be free as well, if they were on the way to begin trash. A good pair of wool socks . . .they are alsom certainly worth something.

Clear enough?

Re: poor man's BOB contest?

Postby G.I. Jarhead » Wed Dec 02, 2009 8:10 am

I have a concern about the clothing content of the BOB. So far some contestants who have posted have been from southern areas of the U.S. and as such don't have the requirements for cold weather gear like those of us in say, Michigan. Normally my BOB would contain polypro long underwear, watch cap, scarf, gloves, etc. These represent a significant cost factor when putting together a $100 BOB since even pre-owned stuff has to be posted at FMV. Even the cheapo waffle knit cotton stuff can seriously impact the $100 limit. I know we are assumed to have a set of everyday clothes which in my case for this time of year would include heavy coat, gloves, scarf, and headgear, but not usually long underwear. We also usually require better sleeping gear than our southern brethren and effective shelter from the elements becomes a higher priority as well.

So my question is are we only going to be constructing a BOB for relatively temperate regions? If not, the BOBs for those of us up north may not be realistic or effective for our AO this time of year because I think we'll be hard pressed to factor in the cold weather gear and related accessories and stay within budget. I'm not complaining mind you. I just think we should keep this in mind when it comes to the judging criteria and should have the matter settled before others start posting their respective entries.

Well I see what you mean, but I believe that the OP already answered that one.

If it's cold outside, it's already assumed that you're wearing cold weather gear (parka, beanie, long johns, wool socks etc). Compared to Michigan; Texas, Georgia and Florida isn't anywhere near as cold as up there and I still threw in a warm Gore Tex Jacket with a liner, 'xxxDarksidexxx' threw in a sleeping bag and 'WhoShotJR' threw in a wool blanket and an emergency blanket.

Personally I figured that I'd just sleep in my clothes, put the beanie on (most body heat escapes from your head), put up the shelter along with whatever natural material I could find (deadfall, wood, brush, dirt, snow or whatever if in a rural area or if I was in a semi-urban or urban area perhaps I'd hole up in an abandoned house, warehouse or shed) and get a fire going if it were that cold/wet outside.

I would think that even if you're living in a REALLY cold environment that if you already had on the appropriate cold weather gear for your climate (parka, warm headgear etc), if you included some kind of blanket, got under some shelter that would retain the heat and got a fire going that you'd be okay.

However if you wanted to get a cold weather sleeping bag I think Majors Surplus sells some of the British Army Surplus ones for around $25 (I got one awhile back). I don't think that the judges would dock you too many points if you explained your rationale in your posting (I personally wouldn't anyway if I were a judge).

There are also other low cost choices for cold weather sleeping bags on the cheap.

Just a thought.

How are we supposed to be traveling? The reason I ask this goes with GI Jarhead's question about cold weather gear, I know of at least a couple of states (I assume it's all the northern and mountain states, but I haven't checked) recommend some type of Winter Emergency Car Kit be kept in your car while driving on the roads in winter. So if we follow our states guidelines (in my case it would be Colorado) we should already have a small set of supplies in our car outside of the cheap BOB we just made, thus giving us access to additional supplies. In addition, even if you don't have a car kit or your state does not recommend one. If you are using your car as a mode of transportation you have resources in your car that you can use to survive (it provides a basic shelter, seats can be ripped apart for added warmth / fire making, etc. We all know that the majority of people if forced to flee will at least consider if not actually using their vehicle in leaving the disaster/emergency.

That was my reaction too. I was really interested in this as a nice test to establish the value of thrift stores and salvaging/adapting for those who can't go the titanium, Gore-tex, and krugerrands route. But xxxDarksidexxx nailed it so well that I'm not sure I can justify spending the $100.
I'm trying to re-motivate myself by adding some other kind of personal challenge - I'm thinking something along the lines of scenarios in "Straight Forward in a Crooked World." ...Perhaps going to a nearby city that I'm not familiar with, and giving myself 4 hours and $100 to come up with a GHB - or something like that.

Yeah, it is a good kit. Beat mine out (especially in regards to the food and the sleeping bag).

xxxDarksidexxx : Just curious, no knife or other cutting tool(s) besides what's on the Winchester multi-tool?

Well, here's my attempt at a Poor Man's BoB.

I came in over budget using Fair Market Value (FMV), but this is the best I could do. The truth is, most items in my kit are common, everyday things anyone should have laying around free for the taking, ie. sweat pants, flashlight, duct tape, etc. A lot of this stuff I got from work, or a convention, or whatever. I listed Actual Cost to me (AC) for each item with FMV, and I come in under $100 there.
So, if I did my math right, FMV= $145.24, AC= $94

This is meant as a 3 day, one person pack. Not long term survival or any other premise.

I. (Last Years) School Backpack, in "Coyete Brown" :) This was too good to throw out last June, so I saved it. Now that cheapskate decision has paid off. FMV $5

II. Clothes
A. Thermal Bott's and Top. Included as part of a sleep system. Winter + cheap Sleeping Bags & Tarp Shelter= Need for jammies! Could easily substitute sweat pants and sweater, which everyone should have laying around somewhere. AC $0, FMV $5
B. Beanie. You lose most of your heat from your head, probably more for skinheads like me. AC $0, FMV $2
C. Socks, 3 pair. You have to take care of your feet. Clean, dry socks for 3 days. I'm fast becoming a fan of Merino Wool, but at $15 for 2 pair, this is an expensive addition. An eBay search turns up a Buy-it-Now price of $4 a pair. FMV $12
D. Wool Gloves. FMV $5
E. Rain Gear. Here in the Bay Area it doesn't ever snow, it rains. It gets to the 30s & 40s in the day and rains on you, then freezes overnight. That's a good scenario for hypothermia, and I don't completely trust those thin, cheapie ponchos to hold up for days on end. Maybe I should throw one in, but let's wear some real rain gear. AC $0, FMV $8 @ Harbour Freight

III. Shelter
A. 8x10 Tarp. The Dollar Store tarps are too small (4x6), so this blue/green reversable tarp is from Lowe's. Probably worth having a better quality tarp here anyway, because so much is riding on it! AC/FMV $8
B. Sleeping Bags. An old cowboy trick my Grandpa taught me is to use 2 so-so sleeping bags, one inside the other, to equal one really warm one. I hope the pink & yellow Hello Kitty bag doesn't show, all you PAW survivors will laugh at me! AC $0/FMV $10
C. Therm-a-rest Ridgerest Sleep Pad. I got this on eBay for $6! If I hadn't, I would have included an old blanket to fold up. I used to do that camping all the time, it works okay. AC/FMV $6
Image

IV. Tools
A. Cheap Imitation Multi Tool. The pliers work, the screwdrivers work, only the blade sucks. AC $0/FMV $5
B. Paracord. I don't think this is the place to go cheap with clothes line or something. AC/FMV $5
C. Flashlight. I don't plan on travelling in the dark. This is just for getting around camp at night. The Maglite Solitaire is probably the smallest, cheapest light I have, so this is the place for it. AC/FMV $5
D. Duct Tape. Only about 6' for repair needs, wrapped around a pencil. AC $0/FMV $1
F. Wire. 3 rolls for a dollar at the Dollar Store. AC/FMV $.33
G. Schrade Old Timer knife. This thing is old, full tang & sharp as hell. Found it at a Gun Show long ago, I'm guessing you could find a quality older belt knife at a Pawn Shop or Flea Market for around (FMV) $10
H. Bic Lighter & Strike Anywhere Matches. FMV $1
I. Saw. Yep, the Dollar Store. Tested on the Christmas tree last night, it works! AC/FMV $1
J. Maps & Compass. Also included select parts from the Army Survival Guide found here http://www.equipped.org/fm21-76.htm FMV $5
Image

V. Water
A. Frontier Water Filter Straw. FMV $10 http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/CAMP174-1.html
B. 2 Liter Bottle FMV $.05 CRV
C. 2 each 1 Liter Bottles. FMV $.10 CRV
D. Household Bleach, in a pill bottle. A few drops of bleach per gallon will kill the bacteria in your water. FMV $.10

VI. Food
Almost all of this stuff came from the Dollar Store- that place is awesome!
A. Canned Ham, Chicken and Tuna FMV $8
B. Rice $1
C. Ramon Noodles $3
D. Peanut Butter (4,750 calories!!!) $5
E. Graham Crackers $1
F. Swiss Miss $1
G. Tin Can for cooking in and Plastic Silverware FMV $0
H. Slim Fast Bars. 6 for snacks AC/FMV $1
Image

A tight fit in this small bag, I might unbox this stuff if I was going to use this setup for my BoB.
Image

VII. First Aid/Hygiene
A. Neosporin $4
B. Toothbrush. Your Dentist will give you one for free. Go see your Dentist. $0
C. Floss. Same as above. $0
D. Soap from a hotel stay. If you're too poor to stay at a hotel, smile pretty at the maid and ask nice :) FMV $0
E. Towel and wash cloth. AC $0 FMV $2
F. Ladies Sanitary Pads. Carry 4x4s if you want to, these are more absorbent. They come 15 to a box for $2, I have 5 in the kit. FMV $.66
G. Tweezers. FMV $1
H. Magnifying Glass FMV $1
I. Tylenol (aka acetaminophen). Pain killer and fever reducer. FMV $2
J. Imodium AD. I don't need the runs while on the run. 6 pills for a dollar here http://www.amazon.com/Imodium-D-Anti-Di ... B000GCHX7K FMV $1
K. Mirror. One of the wife's old compcats, saved from the trash. FMV $1
Image

VIII. Misc.
A. Safety Pins $1
B. DEET. Bug Spray is cheap, and you'll be glad you have it when the 'skeeters are out. FMV $2
C. Sunscreen. FMV $3
D. Paper Towells. TP, Kitchen duty. Free from Carl's Jr! FMV $0
E. Whistle. FMV $1

It feels okay, and weighs in at 24 lbs.

I guess now would be a good time to use that sewing kit on that sleeping bag. Darn nice poor man's kit. Sh@t now I don't even want to do one.........

the night before i posted my set up i repaired the tear on the bag with the sewing kit from the bag. i was going to mention that in my post, but it was taking me WAY to long to type eveything up , and i some how forgot to mention it. my sew job isnt the best, but it will hold up.

you looking at my bag and saying you dont want to put one together is a HUGE compliment dude, cuz i have checked out your gear and threads and you have some top notch stuff! :D

i have hesitated posting my main BOB that i have set up cuz there is so much sweet gear on the board. ....my main BOB is a poor mans BOB compared to some folks gear on here. ( my bag was only 50.00 ) i took ideas i used to put my main BOB together for this project.

meduim flathead screwdriver
2.5 inch serated knife
i inch knife
phillips screwdriver

i also picked up a 5.00 winchester brand folder from wal mart, but didnt put in in the bag, so i could stay under budget...i figured the multi tool would cover my knife needs ( in poor mans land )

well it looks like my budget will be busted as i need to add FMV for the additional clothes i have listed....will edit my post later tonight i guess.

Ahhh, okay.

So those tools are in ADDITION to the multi-tool? Or to replace it and those are all separate items?

In my initial post I left a few things out of the post and out of the pictures too.

(why do you think it ended up being edited a million times? :) )

Was just kind of wondering as the kit seemed pretty complete except for a lack of many tools.

all of the tools i listed are IN the the multi tool. the multi tool is 10 tools in one, so i got 10 tools in my BOB for 5.00.

when your poor you need to get the biggest bang for your buck, so it comes out to .50 per tool :D

I wanna see I wanna see!

It's cool seeing all the Kifaru swag and whatnot, but some of us (okay, ME) are in a lower tax bracket.
I've held off posting my Bug Out stuff for the same reason.

So I'll show you mine if you show me yours!

And you've set the bar high on this contest, nice work!
