Nice job Haciman!
I am blown away that you guys can come in under $100.

How big is the barrel liner? Is it like a humongeous trash bag or something?

To all:
If I get motivated next week, I may do some tweaking to my rig. I have started setting up my more permanant GHB based on this kit.

The drum liner is massive, if I were a foot shorter it would be a tube tent lol. The plan is to use it as a bivy style overbag for the fleece sleeping bag. I can use two of the contractor bags to fill with leaves\pine needles for an insulated sleeping platform\pad and the Space blanket as a tarp if necessary. If it's extremely cold (normally not likely in Houston) I could fill the other two bags with leaves\pine needles and place them on top for added insulation or I could wad up paper\newspaper and fill the space between the fleece bag and drum liner for insulation.

WW,

Thanks for the compliment on my lowly coffee can.

I think add it on to your initial BOB post that way its all together. I'd been thinking about doing it, just have to find time. My bag is set up for staying on the move, no trapping or fishing gear. I can even eat the ramen noodles dry, I just sprinkle the seasoning on the noodle "bar" and eat like a big rice cake.

I'm preparing a sub $100 BOB, too. Mine will probably be modified to become a get-home kit to left in my vehicle.

One issue I'm wrestling with is whether to go with a cheap ($10) multi-tool or a higher quality Leatherman/Gerber. I've purchased two different Christmas special multi-tool packages at Home Depot for $10 each. One was the Husky brand package, and the other was the Stanley package. While the Husky and Stanley both seem reasonably well made (except for the file, which is terrible on both tools), they really look inferior when compared to a Leatherman or Gerber multi-tool. I rejected other inexpensive multi-tools such as those sold at Walmart because they utilized cast metal handles that might break easily under load.

So you bought two el cheapos for $10 each, yes? I paid $20 out the door for a 20th anniversary Leatherman Wave at a Pawn Shop. A few scratches but otherwise practically new. If you look around at Pawn Shops good name brand multi-tools can regularly be had for $20 or under. Don't be afraid to haggle, especially if you end up wanting more than one or other items to go with it.

It appears there is more than one person interested in trying out their PMBOB.

Great!

when you have a post, how about starting a new thread something like "poor man's BOB in action".

Then any entries who want to can post there, and it will be an apples to apples thing in tta thread and it will easier for the judges to look it over if they want.

Sound good?

Hey guys,

I won't be able to submit my kit by the deadline; no time to put it together due to an "unexpected kitchen remodel". Stupid pipes.

Anyway, since I'm not competing I thought I'd share my plan to hopefully give some last-minute ideas to those of you who haven't finished yet.

That leaves me at $79.49 which leaves about $20 for upgrades. I had a few sources of inspiration worth sharing:

he has a lot of harbor feight listings! MY MAN! i love them. they have the best junk  i have one about 15 miles from me. a while back i got some solar chargers from them...still putting my solar kit together, just trying to find the right box to pack it in. they work great, and i have been charging batteries and using them to see how well they work. so far its full of win. :D

fixed blade knife $?.?? (This was given to me about 10 years ago, and I haven't a clue how much it would cost. Close-up pictured below)

Image

$90.74 and cost of blade.

I like the food, as it gives just shy of 6000 calories, roughly 40/40/20 fat/carb/protein, and most of it is regularly eaten. The gatorade container, once empty, can be used as a canteen to purify in, then poured into the other water bottles for storage. The FAK is a little underpowered at the moment, but I will not change it until I take some classes to learn how to use each item.

Let me know what you think.

Edited to add the new pictures. Still a little under cost. I'm happy with it now, unless someone reminds me of something.

I like the double walled alcohol stoves. Starting to think I was the only one around here making them. Like the use of a trash bag to water proof gear/clothing.

Let me know what you think. As the total suggests, I should be able to add another $13 worth of gear in here. Just if the pack can hold it.

If I were you would add a Mora Clipper -$12- and two emergency ponchos- $3.76- and just slightly bust your budget.

I actually *do* already own most of that stuff. The stuff I'd need to pick up is the rice, powerbars, pot, spikes, and cheap vice grips. I'm just too lazy to take my ALICE off of the frame and pick the parts out of the three different kits I'd have to rob stuff out of right now. :). Once my remodel is done I'll see if I can't get something up.

Should probably add some more first aid stuff and maybe upgrade the poly rope to paracord. A small bottle of bleach from the dollar store for water purification. A small fishing kit would be a good addition, but I could make do for quite a while with this kit as long as I could procure food.

shrimpwd - nice kit. I definitely like the quantity of food included. I'm a little concerned about the clothing you have in there; it's all cotton. IMHO, you should at least bag it so it doesn't get wet and you have something dry to change into in case your pack gets soaked.

Knight: actually, that dark green long sleeve shirt is a 100% polyester "Shirt, sleeping, heat retentive, and moisture resistant", and the thermals that I haven't taken pics of yet are a poly/cotton blend (I know, still cotton there).

I have a poncho as well already. Once I get the windscreen/pot stand made, I'll take the new pics. I do have an older fixed blade knife, but as it was a gift at least 10 years ago, I wouldn't know what to value it as. I'll include it in the pics. That would currently leave me with just needing an emergency blanket. Since it's winter here, I might also add a down blanket I picked up at a yard sale 2 years ago for $2. It might help just a bit more.

I put together a $11.00 poorman's survival kit as a dirty santa gift. I liked it so much I made one for me as a back up kit.

All items are from the Dollar Tree

1 shower curtain 72in by 60in
1 8 in1 pocket knife
1 roll of twine
1 mirror
1 3 pack of lighters
1 first-aid kit
1 roll of duct tape
1 4 pack of nutri grain bars
1 3-LED flashlight
1 pack of AAA batteries

All packed into a 1 gallon zip-lock bag
A .45 caliber bullet fired from a $190.00 Hi-point pistol is just as deadly from some other over priced .45 caliber pistol.

The only day I fear is when there is no more ammo.
