HossDelgado's BOB In Progress(w/pics this time)

Postby HossDelgado » Tue Aug 11, 2009 2:24 pm

Now that i can post pictures (friggin finally!) i repacked my BOB and took pictures of it as i repacked.

First off, i know that i'm missing a bit of stuff, i just posted what i had at the time, so take it easy :P

Onto the bag:

CFP90 that i inherited from my brother a long time ago (going to get a Kifaru ZXR sometime in the near future).

Here it is fully loaded (minus water):

Good stuff!
Perhaps exchange the 1 qt USGI canteen (plastic) for an older metal one? Might be nice to have one of your containers suitable for being heated more directly.
Perhaps a small radio?
You don't seem like the type to go without a flashlight - is there one already in your EDC?

MSR Whisperlite seems a good choice for dealing with a wide range of weather conditions and altitude.

How do you envision this BOB being used (i.e. what are your prioritized/most likely disasters, etc)? What is there duration/when is the bugging likely to come to a conclusion?
This might relate to a couple issues:
Maps?
Extra sox?
Maybe a whistle or some other sort of "Here I am, come find me" devices?
Extra fuel for the Whisperlite? (I like the alcohol stoves a lot, but maybe streamlining platforms here is useful, unless this is heading into INCH territory)

You have 3 folders , two multitools and a fixed blade . I think you can safely pare that down some . How 'bout one of each ? :D

Add a folding saw or a hatchet for firewood .
Get some raingear and more clothing in general .
Can probably lighten up on the water carriers and nalgenes
Loose that big ass sleeping mat and get a Thermarest .
Pick up a water filter
Get a LED headlamp and a small backup flashlight .

That's off the top of my head . Hope that helps . :D

Couldn't find my flashlight when i took the pics :? but i looked around and found it.

Likely disasters? Hmmm... brush fires, heatwaves, snowstroms (possibily), drought (even though we don't get much rain anyways so no big deal) I live in Southeast Utah, if that helps people. Likely end time? A week to two weeks, tops. I might just be too optimistic though. I need to get some maps, thanks for reminding me. Socks, need some. I have a bright orange whistle on the left side of my pack*

*See first picture

Good idea

I usualy pack one folder (the one in the middle), the other two i tossed in there for shits and giggles. I'll keep the big multitool.

Thanks, it does help =) .

Going to grab a Gerber hatchet/pack axe next time i go to sportsman's warehouse. Raingear, i have a USGI poncho, but could you recommend anything else? Clothing, i'm okay on, just need to pack it. I tossed the USGI canteen and lifeline bottles after i took that picture. The sleeping pad IS a Theramrest  . Water filter, on list. Didn't think of the headlamp, +1. Gonna get another flashlight soon.

Thanks guys =)

What's the story on that rock hammer?

The pack looks pretty full, can you get the water or food in to it?

A -20 bag can be pretty bulky, do you have a compression sack?

-1 - 1 quart USGI canteen
-1 - 2 quart USGI water bladder
If you can, offload them. Replace them with Nalgenes (lighter, stronger, no funky taste) or bags (even lighter, fold up much, much smaller empty). I might even think about a stainless bottle, so you can boil water in it.

-2 - Potable Aqua Taste Neutralizer bottles
Take one. Two PAs to a liter, then one of these an hour later. It works just as well as what they recommend.

-1 - Aquarina filter straw
Remember it's limits- 20 gallons, if you've got the mud out of your water.

-18 - Esbit fuel tabs
Got enough? I like my Esbit tabs for tinder or warming water to make tea, but that is really all you can do with them.

-1 - Esbit Stove
Ditch it. You can pack four tabs and a ferro rod and striker in an Altoids tin, AND several lengths of drinking straw that have been heat crimped to seal in a bit of pj and cotton wool. Add a little bit of hardware cloth to serve as a platform you put the esbit tab on (so it is easier to clean). VOILA! Smaller, lighter, and a lot more useful. :)

-1 - Pepsi Can Alcohol Stove
Or just keep your esbits loose, and put a little screen of hardware cloth on the "undersides" bowl and use your Esbit tabs with this.

WAITASECOND! Are there two in your gear?

-2 - Pill bottles of strike anywhere matches
You can do better. Rx bottles are ok, better than OTC pill bottles, but they still aren't completely water tight. Spend a couple bucks at walmart for orange coghalan's cases, or at the OD ones at the Army Navy store.

-1 - MSR Whisperlite with 22oz fuel bottle
You have big stove, and esbit stove and ethanol stove... Ok, I can't really point fingers, I have my little campstove in my ruck and wood stove that started life as a coffee can in a nalgene pocket in my vest, but those are only two stoves. I might drop the ethynol stoves, honestly.

-1 - Trekker Mummy -20 degree bag
You carry that year round?

Got plenty of the pokey-sharpy. Might want to narrow it down some.

Saw the rifle, but no ammo and no cleaning kit.

Didn't see:
Flashlight, spare batteries.
Duct tape, wire.
Socks.
Thermal layer.
Maps.
Saw and/or hatchet.
TP, yes, but trowel/etool?
Sunglasses, spare or safety glasses
Fishing gear (I saw you mention up to two weeks, and this works even on birds)

Once ironraven has worked over a pack there is little need for my review so I will just add a few pointers.

Unless it was missed I didn’t see any clothing or rain gear. This is your first line of defense against exposure risks. Maybe add a UL bug net for that USGI bivy. Maybe drop a knife as there seems to be enough of them. I like that lever .22 cal. Like the water capacity of your system. Do you have a LED headlamp and/or flashlight? Maybe a fold up saw. I like the closed cell pad as it will not fail.

Woods, you're making me blush. I'm lucky to hit the trail twice a month, I get the impression you have a bad week if you only hitting it twice a week, so I defer to you.

Postby HossDelgado » Wed Aug 12, 2009 11:49 pm

Sorry about the delay in posting, i went and had a "gear test" yesterday, got back at about 11 this morning.

Anyways..

Blackdog:

I was just seeing if it'd fit in there for future reference (overnight prospecting/gear test trip?) Water, i can fit in there, it gets a tad tight though.
As for food, i need to restock. Going to grab some Mountain House meals next time i can. (got to start a list).
I've been meaning to get a compression sack, but keep forgetting  .

COMB2:

It's for my alcohol stove. Which after yesterday, i'm thinking about tossing somewhere else. Might throw it into my daypack, never know.

Ironraven

Dang, you tore my kit all to hell (not complaining, just saying :) ), but better for it now on teh intrawebz then when i do need it.
After i packed it, i tossed the 1 quart canteen, didn't really feel the need for it.
The 2 quart bladder i might toss, just have to think on it.
Good on the the Potable Aqua, +1.
That is true on the mud, didn't think about that.
I bought a esbit fuel pack (12 in a box) plus the ones that came with the stove itself, so probably. Nice call on the altoids deal, got some instructions for retards like me?
And no, there's just the one, i took two pictures of it.....
I had a OD one somewhere, don't really know what happened to it.
Coghalan's? You sure on that? I've bought some POS gear from them before, but YMMV.
The only reason i have the other stoves in there is because i don't have any fuel for the Whisperlite and don't know how to use it....., bought it for $40 from a friend and haven't made him show me how to use it...
Yes, i carry the bag year round, even though i could use one of my others, i just love that bag too much though.
Knives i took yesterday, were the fixed blade, the old folder (not the shiny new one) and my winchester multitool. Plenty of edges to do the work.
I have a Maglite that runs on AA. Need to get spares though, thank you for reminding me.
Duct tape and wire... Nope, don't have any.
Socks were on my feet :P . Seriously though. I forgot to pack any clothes when i first started this thread.
Thermal layer? Set of polypro thremal underwear, and a set of BDU pants with liner (for winter though)
Maps, saw/hatchet i do not have, need to get.
I have a $9 POS that i take for "doing my business" in the woods.
I carry sunglasses all the time on me, i just forgot to list them lol.
I'm currently looking for some UL fishing tackle/gear, but WW's thread's are tempting me into getting a telescopping pole with tackle.

Woods Walker

Clothing, i just toss some tee shirts in there with a extra set of pants and socks. Got to rethink that set up though.
All i have for rain gear is a tarp and USGI poncho (doesn't rain that much near in Southeast Utah, but i need to update it anyways).
Bugs here in Utah consist of grasshoppers, flies and the occasional mosiquto (i should know, allergic to them, though minorlly).
I'm currently looking for a USGI bivy. Did i say i had one? If i did, whoops.
I'm looking for a cheap, durable, with long battery time/usage LED headlamp but don't really know what to get.
Yup, AA Maglite.
Instead of a foldup saw, i'm going to get a Gerber packaxe (although i haven't figured out what size yet). The reasoning behind that is, i'm much more used to using a hatchet/axe than i am with a saw.

Tilt

I agree. *hint hint again Pete*

Props on the gear test and the attitude.
Don't wait on your friend, re the stove - go to this site, download the manual, and have fun.
http://cascadedesigns.com/MSR/FAQ/Stoves

It's good that your contingency planning has end-states and prioritized lists of anticipated dangers, and incorporates going out and putting things to the test. Don't forget to always loop your gear decisions back to that.
In the focus on good gear, it's easy to loose sight of that. I've carried around gear that I never used, because I'm a knucklehead. Even though I was out in the field a fair amount, I let my love of the gear blind me to the fact that it wasn't serving my purposes.

Yes, I like my really, really, take a leak and freezes before it hits ground, cold bag. But not in summer. *shudders*

And the $9 trowel works! I carried a $2 plastic one for years.

Next time i go to Wally World, i'll pick up a few.

Here in Utah, it can get quite cold (to me anyways). Winter time, in the 20's, not to mention wind chill. And did i mention where i live it ALWAYS is blowing? :x

A few months ago, we had state wide hurricane force winds. Semi's being blow over on the highways, trees snapping in half, limbs hitting houses, giant clouds of sand, you'd walk outside with sunglasses on and could hear/see the sand hitting them. To those who live in hurricane/tornadoe areas, that's not bad. But to us Utahians, it was kinda creepy.

$@% wind. Seriously.

But back on topic, I live in Southeast Utah. The temperatures can vary from place to place. Down in the Arches National Park, it'll get down to 60-50s at night sometimes. Now that might not seem too bad, but in the day it'll get up to 80-90. Dry heat (no humdity! i love the desert :D )

During the winter, we get temps from 20 to 40. It just depends on the day.
Summer, 70 to 80. Again, no humidity! :D (i absolutely HATE humidity, with a flaming passion)
Lately we've been getting quite a bit of rain, so gotta get some more rain gear.

Anyone have any recommends?

EDIT: For bumpage

There's probably as many definitions as posters, but here's my thought:
A BOB is for use when you have somewhere you are bugging out TO. It fits into a plan with specific parameters stemming from likely emergencies and your pre-prepared responses. These emergencies generally have a beginning and an end. TSHTF - Yes, TEOTWAWKI - Not really.

An INCH bag differs in foreseeing longer-term troubles and limited re-supply.
For me, a BOB contains things that keep me going for a relatively short period of time. Food example: Mainstay Ration Bars. Shelter example: tarp & 550 cord.
An INCH bag contains things that will allow me to start life over again. Food example: Seeds/Hunting/fishing/trapping gear. Shelter example: carpentry tools.

Other angles:
- The difference between teaching someone to fish, versus than giving them fish.
- The difference between 'supplies' versus 'tools.'
- A hiking stove using some sort of pressurized/canned butane mix would be in my BOB, since I just need it for awhile, and am not concerned with difficulties finding new cartridges. For my INCH Bag (and with all other things being equal), I might like an alcohol stove, because fuel is more plentiful/replaceable over the long term.

Cheers!

As was mentioned, BoB vs INCH is a matter of opinion.

To me, BoB + feet is how your ass gets to your BoL when the BoV breaks, with a safety margin. It also includes paperwork so you can prove you are you if your BoL is gone, to. It means you're probably abandoning equipment and supplies with your vehicle, but fuck it, sometimes beggers can't be choosers.

INCH is more like "zomg, the end of the world is here, I'm so happy, I'm going to run off to the hills and live like danny boone and dave crockett and never have to deal with another person again unless I'm going to shoot them and steal their stuff and maybe eat them". (No offense to anyone with an INCH- this is the stereotype it will ALWAYS have with me, and I've had it for a quarter century now.)

Bit of an update:

Got a MSR Miniworks Ex today :D
(I figured out that it'll screw directly onto my camel bak, so that's a plus)

On the list next, MH meals, 10 liter MSR Dromedary bag, Gerber axe/hatchet.

You may think this sounds wierd but I actualy pack a roll of trash bags in mine instead of a poncho and a tarp because they have the same functions and more if you are creative enough... Also depending on where you are going I would also pack a colapsable fishing pole or just line and hooks.... Also I found a machete and a cable saw is handy too.... But these are a few suggestions to add to your pack as well....

Thanks for the suggestions. :)
A couple black trashbags would be helpful, now that you mentioned it.
I'm going to get a collapsible fishing pole sometime, if/when i can find one.

Also, I stripped my BoB and packed it into my large ALICE and i can't figure out how to get the straps tightened. :? When i put it on, all the weight stays on my shoulders, not my hips like it's supposed to. (I have the waistbelt tightened pretty much as far as it'll go, and yet, it doesn't work)

Help?

If i can't figure it out, or don't like it, i'll go back to my CFP-90 i guess.

(Couldn't help but brag a little, my new MSR Miniworks EX cost me $59.95. :D. Gotta love military PXs')

I've always bee under the impression that ALICE was supposed to ride high at the bottom and low at the top, as it would be between LBE with things like canteens at one end and a helmet at the other. :P

Where is that hipbelt riding, btw? On the tops of your hipbones, or at their widest point?

If you're a long torso'd, thick shouldered neanderthal like me, you might want to extend the shoulder straps a little. I've got 1.5-2" of the webbing let out (between the frame and where the pads start).
Also, this might not be the right thing to do, but last outing I found myself easing the pack back off my upper back to shift the weight to my hips more now and then. The trade off is that it puts some pull on the front shoulder (pulls them back), so after a while I was pulling those straps back in.
