How to protect your Data from Water and Static-EMP Longterm

Postby gillis » Sat Apr 25, 2009 11:13 pm

We all know by now that flash media is a way better option than hard drives but you need to go a step further to protect it from water and EMP. Try to find a lower density drive like 2GB for the best chance of keeping your data long term.. I know this part at least since I have worked in the hard drive industry.

The first step is the copy all your data to the drive and "safely remove hardware" right before removing it. Next find an antistatic bag. It will need to be the one that looks like transparent tin foil.

Tools:
You will need a soldering Iron and a bit of patience.

I'm not sure the perfect temperature to get this to work so it takes a few tries. When practicing practice on some unused piece.

The following process will show you how to melt the bag shut in turn making it waterproof and protected from EMP and static discharge... we all know zombies drag their feet. :P

Here is me melting the seam. Please note it took two tries but I eventually got it

Here is the finished product... Sorry my camera sucks!!

I did test in a bowl of water. No leaks. If you leave a little air in there it will make it float as well!

It may even be wise to glue some foam the the edges to prevent smashing from other gear.

Cheers. Just another idea I thought up.

Here are my past ideas...

You could use a food saver to seal the anti static bag and then put it into a food saver bag and vac pack it for a little extra protection. That is if you have a food saver?

Awesome idea. I think this would be the order

* Solder shut in anti-static bag
* insulate sides with closed cell foam
* the seal again airtight with foodsaver bag

Thanks for sharing... I'm so doing that!

The key with the anti-static or trying to 'emp' protect a item is that the item does not contact the outside of the container/package. By placing the item between a piece of cardboard would help. The cardboard acts as an insulator from any static discharge moving across the package/container, but in truth, no one really knows at what strength a EMP will fry items.
