Postby Mags » Tue Mar 13, 2012 12:26 am

Sunday several members of "my" group met to enjoy some time together, good food & of course discuss our plans and prepping. A couple members couldn't make it due to work but the majority was represented. We covered a lot of ground in our discussions. It was amazing though how often we got off track on tangents whether it was politics or war stories etc. (I spearheaded the keeping on point theme! Ha, get it?)

As a group we already have information on each other much as a squad leader would on his troops. Our "medical team" already has blood types, allergies, medications etc. We already have a BOL with primary and alternate routes. We know what each already has as far as preps & wish lists. All of our skills, strengths & weaknesses are listed as well. The primary issues to be covered were; our BO trigger, BOL security, & tools/machinery at the BOL. These primaries were of course broken down further.

One thing that really amazed me was the shear amount of expertise available within the group. We have some real subject matter experts in numerous areas. (I have no doubt that we could turn the "CAT" into an "A-Team tank!" LOL) The opposite also scared me! While we have some "experts" we definitely have to work on cross leveling our various know-how’s & knowledge! Our mechanic folks brought up simple concerns from their point of view, which made me go, "huh," like a deer in headlights. Many things I take for granted as common knowledge static site security SOPs had to be gone over step by basic step. Of course there was a constant stream of "what ifs," brought up. This within reason often can end up being helpful also.

As a group we had previously decided that we would each BI for natural disasters. The BO to our BOL would be reserved for manmade disasters & civil unrest. I made the statement that grabbing a pack and heading off into the wilderness is a stupid fantasy plan but that I would do that before jumping on a bus to a FEMA shelter. It got some laughs but when members were then educated on Katrina, NO, and the Super Dome atrocities they understood better.

One thing that gave me the warm & fuzzies inside was that "my" group had unanimously chosen to arm train and defend what is ours. While the cute quant couple from New England on “Doomsday Preppers” vows to civilize marauders with a fabulous meal & depend on an unarmed community for “security” We will be prepared to defend with a tiered defense plan executed with military proficiency…….I hope!

I hope these ramblings make some sense. There was so much gone over and covered it would be difficult to list it all. I realized that while we continue to create group SOPs we need to cross train each other in our various skills. I won’t go into any particulars of course I just wanted to post this up to keep people on ZS thinking. This site has helped my/our prepping tremendously!

Interesting post Mags. it's good to hear what the thinking and discussions of other people are in planning and preparation especially at a group level. Sounds like you have a good well rounded set of skills in your group which must be reassuring. It's interesting to hear that you noted how security knowledge and issues (e.g.-at a BOL) that you take for granted are things people "don't know what they don't know". In some very preliminary discussions with a group of friends and family on similar issues a lot of them believe that: 1/ security won't be an issue even in a regionalized natural disaster and 2/ the logistics of setting up and maintaining security is simple, you just have someone stand around with a shotgun-right :? (e.g.-don't understand the manpower requirements of setting up and maintaining 24/7 OP,s, sentries, etc...). I suppose this highlights the value of having SME's in a group!

I found having such discussions with a group brought forth sometimes really basic issues that maybe weren't necessarily on my radar or of high priority, for example my better half brought up the issue of not having enough TP to last as for her this basic comfort was of high priority and honestly running out of TP would probably make a lot of people miserable. I constantly highlight the fact that if the lights went out in Canada in January (from an ice storm, CME, blackout such as in the Northeast in 2003) then how would people stay warm without proper, safe heating. Believe it or not many had not given this serious thought  So few houses now have woodstoves or fireplaces that no heat in January even for a few weeks let alone longer would be a disaster!

It's good to hear how other groups discussions are going so thanks for posting Mags.

Good point Mags - we should always be aware of what knowledge we 'take for granted' when out with others.

Hell, I'd teach it for less then that.

Granted, they may have a bit of overhead, food, ammo, targets, lodging, etc. $425 for the weekend class and I could see you burning through $100 in ammo, $25 in food, $25 in targets. It could ad up quick.

I hit the mother load on magazines! I was able to supply two teammates & two friends with AR's 24 mags each, definitly winning hearts and minds. :D All the while keeping my levels where I want them. I know I can't eat or drink them but I don't give a shit cause having them, (loaded,) gives me the warm & fuzzies.
